GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • • • •
Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturers directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particu larly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Marie Nugent 281-859-1104 Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

Start a Realistic Exercise Program It’s a New Year and you’re making a promise to yourself to get in better shape and never be breathless again. This time YOU WILL DO THIS! How can you start a realistic exercise regime this time around and not get burned out? Check out these 3 simple steps: 1) Get a full check-up from your physician first. You want to exclude any underlying health problems that could be dangerous when you’re exercising. You want to be cleared to exercise by your doctor before you begin. 2) Start slowly, maybe 20 minutes a day for three days a week, increasing your intervals in five-minute increments to hit exercising five to six times a week for 60 minutes a day, as the federal government suggests. Remember, when you exercise, your heart rate needs to be elevated. You need to be sweating and your heart needs to be pounding. It may take a little time to build up to that.

3) Recognize that every little bit of exercise helps. Some exercise is better than no exercise. If you’re busy or tired or not feeling well and you’re tempted to skip exercising, remember that every bit does a lot of good.
EATING HEALTHIER & TASTIER How can eating healthy be tasty? Oh yes it can! Exercise contributes just 40% towards weight loss. The remaining 60% is your INPUT! Eat healthier. It’s so easy. • Begin with cleaning out your kitchen pantry and fridge. Toss all full fat items, whole milk dairy products, foods with partially hydrogenated oils or shortening, chips and other fatty snacks. • Refill your pantry and fridge with goodness. Fill your fridge with fresh fruits and veggies that YOU will cut and enjoy. Your pantry should be stocked with oatmeal (not instant), whole wheat cream of wheat, whole grain cereals, unsalted/natural nuts and if you must have chips and cookies, opt for the low fat/low salt goodies with low saturated fat and zero trans fat. Be sure to purchase eggs with omega3’s, low fat or skim milk, cholesterol reducing butter spreads and tons of frozen veggies! • TOSS THE SALT. Enough said. • Use lots of spices. South Asian, Thai and Italian seasons are a super hit with everyday cooking. • Eat 6 times a day. That’s right, eat 6 meals a day. Begin at 7 AM, 10 AM, then 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM and at 9 PM. Your breakfast, lunch and dinners at 7, 12 and 6 will be a little heavier than the in between meals, but not by much. Your snack meals should include a fruit, protein and small carbohydrate. EAT UP!

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college.
Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.
The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.
Cypress Falls High School students (from left): Amy Cunningham, Zac Babb and Leah Lebeau won Excellent, Honorable Mention and Superior awards, respectively, at the JEA/NSPA 2012 National Convention.
The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1 Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving
CFISD students from five high schools won a variety of awards at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)/National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) 2012 National Convention in San Antonio Nov. 15th -18th.

For more information, please contact the Cy-Lakes College and Career Center at Brenda.gauthey@cfisd.net College Ambassadors - January 11th, Cypress Lakes High School. On January 11th about 75 former Cy-Lakes students will visit the campus to share their knowledge and advice about college with current students. This tradition began with Cy-Springs graduates who came to Cy-Lakes in January 2009 and talked about the things they wish they had known before they went off to college. On November 15th, the cheerleaders served Thanksgiving dinner to the residents of Grace Care Center. It was a wonderful act of kindness and service that was beneficial for all in attendance. Thank you girls for being active in your community for the good of others. The Lobo cheerleaders had some great “nature” time on November 18th with family and friends at their annual hayride. On a beautiful, crisp night, they roasted hot dogs and made smores over a camp fire, played games and enjoyed each others company away from the lights and complications of the city. A well deserved respite for our hard working girls! On December 2nd, the cheerleaders donned their Santa hats and holiday garb, hopped on a beautifully lit float complete with music and a snow blowing snowman and rolled down Highway 6 in the annual Parade of Lights. Once again, our girls served as beautiful ambassadors of Langham Creek High School in a fun community event benefiting the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department.

Cy-Christian Learning Center Annual Dinner The Cypress Christian School Learning Center recently held its annual dinner and this year’s elementary and secondary families enjoyed an evening of great food, fun and fellowship! In addition, Joseph Ramsey, CCS senior, led everyone in song. Guests were encouraged by stories from seniors - Kaitlyn Miracle and Kameron Flory - regarding how the NILD/Discovery and Learning Center programs have helped them overcome their learning challenges and feel more self-confident. Parents of these students also remarked about the changes in their children and that their hope for their child’s academic future has been restored. “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” Vince Lombardi

“Changing Acorns to Oaks” is the theme at Texas Christian School this fall, as well as the title of their annual school wide play this past November. Families and community members enjoyed an eventful evening at the farm where Jr. High and High School students played key roles and students 2 years old – 12th grade sang songs. This fun filled evening will be remembered for years by the class of 2013 as they gave the audience quite a laugh in their roles. Academic, social and spiritual growth is a priority for the administration and staff of TCS. Plan to visit the campus at 6:30 PM for our Open House on February 21st and March 26th to learn more about what Texas Christian has to offer. 2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy Falls High School
Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! For more information, contact Erin Kasperek below:erin.kasperek@cancer.org Phone: 713-706-5652 | Mobile: 281-732-8324 www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Cornerstone United Methodist Church Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013 On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday, August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (1611-81) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for this special service.

The Bear Creek Copperfield and Northwest Jazzercise customers, along with other locations, will help energize the crowd at the Rockets vs. Spurs game, when they perform a choreographed halftime routine at the Toyota Center on March 24, 2013. The Jazzercisers who will perform this high-energy routine are not professional dancers. They come from all walks of life - teachers, doctors, nurses, secretaries, business owners and parents. The driving force behind this performance - in addition to the excitement of performing in front of thousands of people at Toyota Center - is raising money to benefit The Pink Ribbons Project. In the past year, Jazzercise has raised $30,000 for the Pink Ribbons Project and over $330,000 over the past ten years to benefit this worthy cause. They are expected to raise thousands more in years to come.

It is time to WAKE-UP. We need to remind ourselves and those we place our children in the care of, that PARENT’S MATTER and that going behind our backs is not, nor will EVER BE in the best interest of our girls. • Thursday, January 17, 2013 - we would like to invite you (Pastors, Community Leaders, Educators) to LUNCH with Pam Stenzel. • Friday, January 18, 2013 - come join us for a frank discussion of how PARENTS MATTER (Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters & children included). • Saturday, January 19, 2013 - This “morning out” is for TEEN GIRLS and their Mom’s (Aunts, Grandmothers, Sisters)! It is a simple event that brings mom’s and daughters together to begin conversations that will help teen girls be TRANSFORMED by God’s WORD and not conformed to the WORLD! Don’t be the one that says “It’s hopeless, they are all doing it anyway.” Be the one that says “You are valued, you are loved, you are worth respecting and you have the strength and grace you need to make the right choice!!” Will you join me? Register now… Go to www.phckaty.org for more information or call 281-599-0909.
Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with Service January 21, 2013 will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.
HOUSTON, we have a problem! Adults who are too busy, too tired, too whatever to be bothered TEACHING and MODELING respect and integrity to their students, decide it is better to just offer them the morning after pill at SCHOOL, without consent of parents! Be realistic, they are ALL going to “do it anyway!”
Why Serve on MLK Day of Service? Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live - creating the Beloved Community.
What message are we sending our young people? Who is going to speak TRUTH in love to this generation of young women? Where are they going hear that they are valuable? From MTV? FACEBOOK? The boy sitting behind them in Math? The school clinic handing them a chemical hormonal drug cocktail?
The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers and create solutions.
