HOLIDAY RECYCLING!
If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. If every household reused just two feet of ribbon each year, the resulting 38,000 miles or ribbon could tie a bow around the Earth. 28 billon pounds of edible food is thrown away each year - serve smaller portions; diners can always ask for seconds. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high or circle the planet 10 times. Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags total 4 million tons. Think about how you can reduce and help our environment. LIGHTS: HolidayLeds.com will recycle your old incandescent lights and in return send you a coupon for 25% off any purchase of LED Christmas lights from their web site. The program is open all year round and recycled over 10,000 pounds of old lights in 2009 - 2010. See the website for shipping information. PACKAGING: Cardboard boxes, gift-wrap, gift bags, ribbons and stick-on bows can be kept and re-used again. Don’t know what to do with those pesky foam-packaging peanuts? Many UPS Store locations accept them for reuse. Check with your local UPS Store for additional details (www.theupsstore.com). CHRISTMAS TREE: As lights flicker out on another holiday season, many recycle their Christmas trees through community projects that chip the evergreens into garden mulch. Contact your county to find the nearest drop-off location to pick up dates. Harris County 281-855-5600. Fort Bend County 281-342-6171. UNWANTED GIFTS: Unwanted gifts can be donated to your local charities or churches. CHRISTMAS CARDS: A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch and leftover ribbon. Also, local preschools and daycares often appreciate free items for arts and crafts. CELL PHONES AND BATTERIES: Numerous retail locations will accept your old cell phones and batteries. Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and several more. Go to www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/ecycling/donate.htm to find your local listings.
Neighborly reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Texas Christian School is Changing Acorns to Oaks
“Changing Acorns to Oaks” is the theme at Texas Christian School this fall, as well as the title of their annual school wide play this past November. Families and community members enjoyed an eventful evening at the farm where Jr. High and High School students played key roles and students 2 years old – 12th grade sang songs. This fun filled evening will be remembered for years by the class of 2013 as they gave the audience quite a laugh in their roles. Academic, social and spiritual growth is a priority for the administration and staff of TCS. Plan to visit the campus at 6:30 PM for our Open House on February 21st and March 26th to learn more about what Texas Christian has to offer. Texas Christian School is located at 17810 Kieth Harrow Blvd., Houston, TX 77084. Phone 281-550-6060 and website is www. TexasChristianSchool.org

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1 Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. st
Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER “VOLUNTEERS ARE A TREASURE” IN CY-FAIR ISD!
It’s the time of the year when we find ourselves setting new goals and resolutions. Our schools also have goals. And we actively look to our community to partner with us and help us meet our goals. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These dedicated individuals, who give freely of their time and resources, impact the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. If you are interested in being involved at Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at 281-894-3950.
Cy-Falls High School A SHOT AT LIFE
Tashrima Hossain, Cypress Falls Key Club Editor Santa hats top frowzy mops of hair throughout the building. Plates are stacked high with freshly cooked pancakes. The crisp winter air teems with the aura of hospitability. The Saturday sun still is still rising from its sleep, but the teenage volunteers are up and about, serving pancakes to those willing to service the 100 million women who are affected by maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) annually. It is the 2012 Eliminate Pancake Breakfast, and each family packed into the small Applebee’s restaurant is there for a good cause. On December 8th, the Cypress Falls Key Club held its annual Applebee’s Eliminate Pancake Breakfast in order to eradicate maternal/neonatal tetanus

from 32 different countries. The student-led organization has spent much of its fall semester dedicated to raising money for The Eliminate Project, through the breakfast, car washes, trick-or-treating for UNICEF and bake sales. The club members welcomed the advent of the 2012 - 2013 academic year by setting a fundraising goal for The Eliminate Project. In order to raise awareness amidst the school, the officer Board decided to present videos about The Eliminate Project at general meetings. The members were touched by the young families’ hardships and became determined to make a change. Thanks to the owner of a local Applebee’s venue, the club compiled a majority of its fundraised earnings during the Eliminate Pancake Breakfast. Key Club volunteers spent weeks prior to the event selling tickets and spreading awareness. On the day of the event, the members served as waiters and advertisers; proceeds from the event were donated to The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Pancake Breakfast took the Key Club one step closer to its final fundraising objective. District Project Chair, Saksena, created and slowly filled a poster of a syringe to document growth toward the goals. With all of the money raised from the fall semester, the Key Club has filled the syringe and achieved its goal. Through its efforts, it has raised $1,311 and in turn, saved 730 lives.

Scouts GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL Copper Corners Service Unit
Girl Scouts in the Copper Corners Service Unit are looking forward to lots of activities in 2013! January always begins with the annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. Girls will be selling those delicious cookies starting January 5th, so plan to order plenty of your old favorites! A new cookie this year is the Mango Crème, a crunchy vanilla and coconut cookie with a mango-flavored crème filling. Be sure to give them a try! Selling Girl Scout cookies helps girls to develop business and organizational skills and provides funds for individual troops and San Jacinto Council. Cookie money helps to maintain and equip our great camps and buys things like bows and arrows, canoes, feed for the horses and much more. When you purchase Girl Scout Cookies, you are helping to provide special programs and opportunities for our local Girl Scouts. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! If we missed visiting your house, look for cookie booths at area businesses between February 15th and March 24th! Girl Scout leaders and their daughters are looking forward to Leader/ Daughter weekend January 11th-13th. We’ll be gathering in the Hill Country for an incredible weekend. This is an opportunity for leader moms and their daughters to enjoy time together. Crafts, a campfire sing-along and great food (Dutch oven cobbler… mom!) are some of the things we always look forward to at camp. . We make new friends and have time to relax and visit with old ones. We might be climbing a rock wall, participating in a trail ride or performing in the talent show, but we always have a great time and bring back wonderful memories!

Troop 16150, a new kindergarten Daisy troop, has already started to create Girl Scout memories. The girls welcomed parents, family and friends to their investiture ceremony and celebrated with a party. They had learned and recited the Girl Scout promise and sang Girl Scout songs for their guests. They loved showing off their new Girl Scout pins and the promise circle that they earned at their very first troop meeting. You can see the beautiful cake from their celebration, along with troop photos. Other activities in the planning stages are Daisy Day, Brownie Day and an event for older girls. Rumor has it that information on the service unit “Me and My Guy “event will be coming out at the next service unit meeting. Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) and 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any time and no previous Scouting experience is required. Girl Scouts has been building girls of courage, confidence and character since 1912. Give us a call to find out more about it! Contact Dianne Massie at 281-555-9148 for more information. Cornerstone United Methodist Church Wesley Covenant Service January 13, 2013
On Sunday, January 13th, during the 8:30 and 10:45 AM worship services as a part of the worship celebration, we will be including the Wesley Covenant Service from the United Methodist Book of Worship. The first usage of the Covenant Service by a meeting of Methodists was August 11, 1755. During the week before that event, Wesley had been encouraging the Society at Spitalfields to use the covenant as a “means of increasing serious religion which had been frequently practiced by our forefathers and attended with eminent blessing.” Several mornings before he actually introduced the liturgy, Wesley explained it again, talking about the manner of doing the covenant. Then on Friday,

August 11th, Wesley “recited the tenor of the covenant proposed, in the words of that blessed man, Richard Alleine.” About 1800 people arose and gave testimony of their assent. “Such a night I scarce ever saw before. Surely the fruit of it shall remain forever.” Wesley’s motivation for using the service in 1755 came from two sources: (1) He had recently read Gillies’ Historical Collections which spoke of a solemn renewing of a covenant in Massachusetts in 1680 and (2) Richard Alleine (1611-81) whose influence had touched Wesley’s paternal grandparents and whose covenant had been used in Wesley’s family at Epworth. The use of this service proved so successful that it was used frequently, especially on New Year’s Day or the first Sunday in the New Year. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for this special service.

Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy-Falls High School Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm
Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.

We care so much about the Dachshund breed that we can’t bear the thought of any Dachshund suffering. We have one sole purpose and that is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home Dachshunds in need of a second chance at life and love. Our rescue efforts are primarily focused on purebred (and a few mixed) Dachshunds from pounds and shelters. We also aid in the rescue of Dachshunds forced to live in deplorable and inhumane conditions, as well as those which have been abused, abandoned, neglected and starved of food and human affection their entire lives. We believe there is a loving home somewhere for every dachsie rescued… some just take a little longer to find. Become a Foster Parent today or Opt to Adopt! - Not in a position to adopt? We are always in need of additional foster homes. As a foster parent, you have the opportunity to help many dogs by simply providing a safe and secure environment in which a rescued Dachshund can live and be loved until they are physically and emotionally ready to be adopted. Your only out of pocket expense is a little dog food, which, if you already own a dog, you already have in place. While fostering isn’t always easy, it is extremely rewarding. If you’d like more information, please visit our website at www.DachshundRescueOfHouston. org or join us on Facebook at Dachshund Rescue of Houston. Questions? Please put a collar and phone # on your pet. I will be happy to call the owner if you find a pet and let them know that it should have been kept in a safe environment.

It’s a fact that exercise is important for good health. And it’s even better when that exercise helps others in the community. Jazzercise in the Bear Creek Copperfield area has collected food and new toys during the holiday season for the Cypress Assistance Ministries for over 30 years. This year, Bear Creek Copperfield Jazzercise Center along with the Northwest Jazzercise Center has also collected for Operation Interdependence with customers donating snack and personal items for our troops overseas.
The Jazzercisers who will perform this high-energy routine are not professional dancers. They come from all walks of life - teachers, doctors, nurses, secretaries, business owners and parents. The driving force behind this performance - in addition to the excitement of performing in front of thousands of people at Toyota Center - is raising money to benefit The Pink Ribbons Project. In the past year, Jazzercise has raised $30,000 for the Pink Ribbons Project and over $330,000 over the past ten years to benefit this worthy cause. They are expected to raise thousands more in years to come.
