HOLIDAY RECYCLING!
If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. If every household reused just two feet of ribbon each year, the resulting 38,000 miles or ribbon could tie a bow around the Earth. 28 billon pounds of edible food is thrown away each year - serve smaller portions; diners can always ask for seconds. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high or circle the planet 10 times. Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags total 4 million tons. Think about how you can reduce and help our environment. LIGHTS: HolidayLeds.com will recycle your old incandescent lights and in return send you a coupon for 25% off any purchase of LED Christmas lights from their web site. The program is open all year round and recycled over 10,000 pounds of old lights in 2009 - 2010. See the website for shipping information. PACKAGING: Cardboard boxes, gift-wrap, gift bags, ribbons and stick-on bows can be kept and re-used again. Don’t know what to do with those pesky foam-packaging peanuts? Many UPS Store locations accept them for reuse. Check with your local UPS Store for additional details (www.theupsstore.com). CHRISTMAS TREE: As lights flicker out on another holiday season, many recycle their Christmas trees through community projects that chip the evergreens into garden mulch. Contact your county to find the nearest drop-off location to pick up dates. Harris County 281-855-5600. Fort Bend County 281-342-6171. UNWANTED GIFTS: Unwanted gifts can be donated to your local charities or churches. CHRISTMAS CARDS: A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch and leftover ribbon. Also, local preschools and daycares often appreciate free items for arts and crafts. CELL PHONES AND BATTERIES: Numerous retail locations will accept your old cell phones and batteries. Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and several more. Go to www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/ecycling/donate.htm to find your local listings.
Neighborly reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

WINTER TIPS FOR YOUR PLANTS
Winter Tips • Water houseplants less since they grow more slowly on short, dark days. Too much water will kill them. • Don’t fertilize them unless they are growing under artificial lights. • Lining shelves or windowsills with aluminum foil reflects light and provides extra light for houseplants. Be sure there are no leaks that allow water to collect under the foil and damage sills. Caring for houseplants while you’re away on vacation • A week or so before your trip, turn the heat register off in a room with indirect light. • Monitor room temperature with a thermometer placed on the floor. • Check frequently to determine fluctuations of temperature. Ideally temperature should be between low-to-mid 50’s during the day, falling into the upper 40’s at night. At this range, your plants will survive without extra care for a few weeks. • Water all plants the day before you leave, whether they need it or not. Let pots drain fully. • Cover the floor of the room with newspapers and plastic and place all your plants together in the room. • Open curtains, drapes or blinds to allow optimum light to enter the room. Make sure plants aren’t in drafts. • You can also use self-watering wicks available in most plant stores for watering. • If you don’t have a room for the plants, try leaving them in the bathtub. After soaking them good, cover them with a sheet of plastic and they’ll survive for 2 weeks or longer. Shut off the heater vent in the bathroom so the room will remain cool and the heat won’t dry the plants out. Keeping Your Winter Plants Safe Smaller, younger plants have a harder time surviving the cold than larger plants. Be sure and protect these during frigid weather. If you have plants that have been attacked by insects or diseases, pay special attention to them during the winter. Source: www.allaboutthehome.com
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
Villages of Cypress Lakes West
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Kenzie Golladay, a member of the Cy-Ranch Mustang swim team (and also a Key Club officer), used her skills to help with both swim practices and the Houston-area competition in October at the University of Houston. Regarding her help at the Cy-Fair ISD team’s twice-weekly practices, Kenzie said, “I love doing Special Olympics swimming because it gives me a way to connect and interact with the kids by doing something that I am good at and love.”
work with these special athletes who also attend our high school. Several club members have family and friends who are Special Olympics athletes and one Key Club member, Amanda Jean, is a Special Olympics athlete.
Volunteer coaches are in the water with our school district swimmers encouraging them and helping them learn different techniques and strokes to use in competition. Dozens of Key Club members worked the swim practices, all in the water alongside the athletes. Many volunteers were also Cy-Ranch swimmers. At the October competition, Key Club volunteers helped with everything from scoring to selling spirit items. Cheering the swimmers on helped make the day very memorable for the special needs athletes. Athletes and volunteers alike looked forward to the Awards Ceremony, where the Special Olympics swimmers were awarded medals for their efforts. Kenzie stated, “It makes me so happy to see the smiles and excitement on their faces when they get to swim. They love swimming and it touches my heart that I get to coach them and see the progress that they have made!” Cy-Ranch Key Club loved helping our Cy-Fair ISD swim team prepare for the Houston area competition and celebrate their success. Cy-Ranch student and Special Olympics swimmer Dustyn Henson won two medals at the competition. He was excited to have Cy-Ranch Key Club’s support at practices and at the swim meet. He proudly took pictures at the event with club members who had coached him and cheered him to victory. This fall, Key Club members volunteered on Sunday afternoons with practice for our Cy-Fair ISD bowling team. Several of the bowlers attend Cypress Ranch, so it was nice for both these athletes and Key Club members to work together to prepare for the big December Houston-area bowling competition. Cypress Ranch Key Club members have also volunteered this fall at Special Olympics softball and volleyball tournaments in the Houston area. We enjoy our close association with Special Olympics and plan to volunteer at many events coming up in the spring. In past years, we have volunteered at tennis, track and field, soccer and basketball competitions. We’ve also helped at the end-of-the-year celebration banquet. It’s very rewarding to help with Special Olympics and especially so when Key Club members are able to

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB CELEBRATES KEY CLUB WEEK
Cypress Ranch Key Club celebrated the 66th annual Key Club Week during the week of November 5th -9th. One of the nicest traditions in Key Club is taking part in this worldwide celebration, a time to show your spirit and pride for being part of the best and largest service organization in the world! The first Key Club Week was celebrated in 1946. Although many things have changed in the past 66 years, the excitement and enjoyment that occurs during the chosen week in November has remained. Key Club Week has continued to be celebrated over the years as the perfect way to promote your Key Club, whether you are part of the largest club in the world, like Cypress Ranch or part of the smallest club in the world. Each themed day during the week has a different way to get Key Clubbers and non-Key Clubbers alike motivated to perform service and get excited about all of the aspects of the club. Cypress Ranch Key Club enthusiastically celebrated each day of the week with some sort of special activity. Though our club focused on celebrating each day of Key Club to the fullest, we didn’t forget our major mission of serving others. During Key Club Week, Cypress Ranch Key Club members performed just over 800 volunteer hours to our Cy-Fair ISD schools and the Cypress community. Cypress Ranch Key Club is committed to support all Key Club projects and traditions. We are excited each year to celebrate Key Club Week. We enjoy the chance to thank our school staff and sponsoring Kiwanis. We are proud

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB TEAMS UP WITH THE HOUSTON ROCKETS
Cypress Ranch Key Club loves to volunteer with the Houston Rockets basketball team and is thankful to have been able to volunteer at many major events hosted by the Rockets in our Key Club’s five-year history. In the past, our club has helped man All-Star Balloting booths at Rockets games and served up refreshments for runners at the Rockets annual Rockets Run. This year for the first time, our Key Club was invited to work the season home opener!
to wear our Key Club shirts and invite our friends and family to celebrate with us at our annual Key Club Week social. We plan to fully celebrate this special week in the years to come!

January 2013
Our club was excited to team up with the Rockets again this year for the 11th annual Rockets Run. The popular 5K run also features a 2-mile walk and a 1K race for kids. Sponsored by the “Rockets Give Back” charities, all proceeds support a special charity. This year, USO-Houston was the beneficiary of the Rockets Run. USO-Houston provides special lounges at Houston’s two major airports where servicemen can relax between flights while traveling. At last year’s event, over $10,000 was raised for Autism Speaks. For the November event, Cy-Ranch Key Club members woke early and boarded a school bus for the trip to Toyota Center in downtown Houston. Members set up fruit and drinks and loaded pizza ovens with hundreds of pizzas. When the race was complete, club members served food and drink to race participants. Club members were supervised by former Cy-Fair High School Key Club officer and Houston Rockets staff member Nathan Sinclair.

26321 NORTHWEST FRWY #100 Houston residents definitely have Houston Rockets fever with the addition of players Jeremy Lin and James Harden this fall. Our club was thrilled to be invited to work the season opener on November 3rd against the Portland Trail Blazers. Although we have volunteered with the Rockets for five years, this was first year the club has been asked to participate in the Rockets promotional giveaway program. It was an amazing opportunity for the club to interact with the community. Club members reported a couple hours before the doors opened and set up to pass out “A New Age” t-shirts to fans as they entered the Toyota Center. Our club was very grateful for the chance to be involved in this new volunteer opportunity and hope to keep the tradition going for future Rockets games.

CY-WOODS VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS NAMED UNDER ARMOUR ALL-AMERICA
Cypress Woods High School senior Chloe Collins has been named to the 2012 - 2013 Under Armour First Team All-America, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced in November.
Cypress Woods senior volleyball player Chloe Collins, who will play for the University of Texas next season, was honored as a 2012 - 2013 Under Armour First Team All-America selection.
Collins, a 5-foot-7 setter who signed with the University of Texas, is one of 24 athletes nationwide to be named to the first team. These student athletes were invited to the Under Armour AllAmerica Volleyball Match and Skills Competition, held at the KFC YUM! Center on Dec. 16th in Louisville, KY., in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention.
Collins’ Cypress Woods teammate, senior libero/defensive specialist Victoria Arenas, was one of 52 athletes in the nation to be named to the Under Armour Honorable Mention All-America team. Arenas has signed to play for Texas A&M University next season. Requirements for nomination were that the student-athlete be in her senior year of high school, that she be nominated by her high school coach, that her coach be a member of the AVCA and that her individual season statistics versus all opponents for the entire season be entered into MaxPreps, a free service that aggregates and distributes data on high school sports. “I am deeply humbled and honored watching these girls grow and living their dreams. It’s been a fun ride that brings joy to my heart,” said Cypress Woods head volleyball coach Ashley Ahlfinger. “Their journey doesn’t end here; it is just the beginning and I look forward to following their volleyball careers.”
CY-WOODS COMPUTER SCIENCE TEAM SWEEPS COMPETITIONS
The Cypress Woods High School computer science team opened its competition season strong by winning the Sweepstakes Award at the Waller High School contest on Sept. 29th, then following it up with five top-three placings at the Seven Lakes contest on Oct. 3rd.

2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy-Falls High School Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm
Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year!
