HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! THE STORY OF CUPID
Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows about the boy as a mischievous, winged child, armed with bow and arrows. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love and Cupid aims those arrows at humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman’s, he was Cupid and his mother was Venus. There is a very interesting story about Cupid and his mortal bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal, she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid, as soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished, too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. She wandered trying to find her love, until she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous than the last. For her last task, Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto and put it in the box. During her trip, she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche’s love for Cupid, made her a goddess. Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs. And two hearts pierced by an arrow, Cupid’s arrow, most frequently depict love.

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

Harris County LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

notes from the board
We have several houses that need roof repairs. Please do your part to help keep our home values up. Houston ISD and Katy ISD have both stated they are not raising taxes, so it is a great time to protest your tax value and get ahead of the curve. And it’s inevitable that they will go up some time in the near future.

French Butter Cakes (Madeleines)
2 eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup butter
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/3 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/3 cup granulated sugar for decoration
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter and flour 12 (3 inch) madeleine molds; set aside. Melt butter and let cool to room temperature. In a small mixing bowl, beat eggs, vanilla and salt at high speed until light. Beating constantly, gradually add sugar and continue beating at high speed until mixture is thick and pale and ribbons form in bowl when beaters are lifted, 5 to 10 minutes. Sift flour into egg mixture 1/3 at a time, gently folding after each addition. Add lemon zest and pour melted butter around edge of batter. Quickly but gently fold butter into batter. Spoon batter into molds; it will mound slightly above tops. Bake 14 to 17 minutes, or until cakes are golden and the tops spring back when gently pressed with your fingertip. Use the tip of the knife to loosen madeleines from pan; invert onto rack. Immediately sprinkle warm cookies with granulated sugar. Madeleines are best eaten the day they’re baked. Leftover madeleines are wonderful when dunked into coffee or tea. Variation: Chocolate Madeleines: Omit lemon zest. Increase sugar to 1/2 cup. Substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for 2 tablespoons of the flour; sift into batter with flour. EDITOR’S NOTE: If you do not have a Madeleine mold pan, you can use mini muffins pan or whoopee mold pan instead. (I haven’t tried, but would think even a cornbread stick pan would work if greased and floured well enough.) Source: allrecipes.com, Submitted by: Judy Farris

to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. Everyone is welcome to New Creation’s Grand Opening on Sunday, February 10th at the Irene Stern Community Center in Fulshear. The services are a blend of Lutheran worship and contemporary praise with Holy Communion offered at 10 am. The worship leader, Josh Pack, will make you feel at home and inspire your worship. Children are welcome in all our worship services with Sunday school held during the second half of the service. Pastor Dale Olson and his wife, Alene, believe that everyone matters to God. “We live out our mission statement “to serve and share God’s love.” Part of the Grand Opening offering on Sunday, Feb. 10th will go to the Katy Christian Ministries Food Pantry in Fulshear. With Valentine’s Day only a few days away, the message will focus on making our relationships better. Make Your Fat Tuesday Phat with New Creation Church!
Fat Tuesday marks the end of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many traditions celebrate Fat Tuesday with the eating of pancakes, giving the occasion the name ‘Pancake Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day.’ Pancakes contain flour, eggs and sugar, which were once forbidden rich foods during Lent. New Creation Church is reviving the old tradition of serving pancakes on Fat Tuesday with a Katy/Fulshear Community Pancake Supper. The public is invited to join us on Tuesday, February 12th, from 5 -7 PM at the Irene Stern

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.
Creek Bend Estates
Your local Maid Service for 20 Years
In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
