BULLETIN FROM THE BOARD
Now that the holidays are over and the end of the world didn’t happen, it’s a new year for the residents of Falcon Ranch and with spring right around the corner, it’s time to evaluate what we need to do to our lawns as well as the exterior of our homes. This has been mentioned in the past but just to reiterate, Randy Lemmon’s lawn fertilization schedule designed specifically for Texas lawns is an excellent way to take care of your lawn (www.randylemmon.com/ lawns/fertilize.html). In addition, to insure you’ll not receive one of those nasty deed restriction violation letters, go to www.falconranchhoa.com to determine if you’re in compliance with our deed restriction policies. We’re continuing to ask for your help to volunteer for one of our community committees. We need volunteers for the Architectural Control Committee (this committee is responsible for reviewing submitted Home Improvement applications and keeping the associated governing documents adequately enforced), Community Improvement (This committee is responsible for reviewing and researching various projects in and around the community to determine their viability), Landscape (this committee is responsible for managing the common areas found throughout the community and deciding what associated improvements should be made), Security (This committee is responsible for organizing and promoting best practices related to personal and community safety) and Social (this committee is responsible for planning and hosting the community events in and around the community committees). If interested, please send an email to board@falconranchhoa.com or contact Terri Chudy of Principle Management Group, email t.chudy@pmghouston.com or at 713-329-7165. In addition, if you have suggestions, comments or questions for your HOA, please contact Terry at the number or email above. HOA Board Meetings In November, the HOA Board was able to schedule its monthly meetings at a new location. The Falcon Ranch HOA Board will now hold its monthly meetings at The Club at Falcon Point on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The Club at Falcon Point is located at 24503 Falcon Point Drive, Katy, TX. Regular meetings will begin at 6:30 PM and residents are welcome to observe. If you would like to address the Board, please call the PMG Customer Care Line at 713-329-7100 to be placed on the agenda. The Board - which is made up of solely Falcon Ranch homeowners - wants to hear resident concerns, but due to time constraints, open-session discussions must be limited. If you plan to attend, please call the Customer Care Line or check the website (www.falconranchhoa.com) to confirm meeting location or for more details.
Customer Care is Available for Homeowners Do you have a question you need answered or a comment you would like to make regarding our community? If so, please contact the Principal Management Group Customer Care Center at 713-3297171 or customercare@pmghouston.com (email). The Customer Care Center will direct inquiries to the proper authorities and every effort will be made to respond to homeowners as quickly as possible.

The mailing address does not change unless residents contact PMG to update their records. This was especially important to have been updated before annual assessments were mailed in November.

Be a Good Neighbor Please help keep our roads safe by not parking on the streets in our neighborhoods. Some of our roads are very busy throughout the day and evening, yet they are difficult to drive when cars parked on the road reduce them to one-lane streets. In the case of emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances need to be able to maneuver through the neighborhood quickly. Residents can help by parking in garages and driveways.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
Be Safe! Service Your Heater Today!
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors.

STAAR SCORES WILL NOT AFFECT COURSE GRADES FOR 2012 - 2013
Amaya Garage Doors Does your garage door need service? We can help!
Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test.
rs 24 Hou Se Habla Espanol
“Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer.
On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session.

As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.”

CINCO RANCH HS ROBOTICS TEAM HOLDS KATY FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE ROBOTICS QUALIFIER TOURNAMENT
Become a Dental Assistant in just 10 weeks!
Beck Junior High Team advances to Lone Star FLL Championship The Cinco Ranch High School FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) Team 624 “CRyptonite” held its second annual FIRST LEGO League (FLL®) robotics Qualifier Tournament on Saturday, December 8th at Cinco Ranch Junior High. Robotics teams of 4th to 8th grade students from all over the Houston metro area competed in the tournament. Team Cryptonite also organized a tournament toy drive to collect board games for the Krause Children’s Center in Katy. FIRST LEGO League teams of two to ten members work alongside adult mentors to design, build and program autonomous robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® NXT technologies and create an innovative solution to a problem as part of a research project. This year’s competition is the SENIOR SOLUTIONSSM Challenge, where students explore the topic of aging. Can FIRST LEGO League teams improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged and connected in their communities? Team “Bud-Botics,” an independent team from the Cy-Fair area, won the First Place Champions Award as the team with the highest combined score from all elements of the competition. They also won the award for Robot Performance. Team “Beck Tech,” from Katy ISD’s Beck Junior High won the Second Place Champions Award.

As First and Second Place Champions, both Bud-Botics and Beck Tech will advance to compete in the Lone Star FLL Championship Tournament, which takes place on February 23, 2013 at John H. Reagan High School in Houston. FLL Teams are judged on each of the three parts of the FLL Challenge: The Robot Game - the performance of their robot in head-to-head competition, along with robot design and programming; The Project - a research project and presentation and FIRST Core Values - for how well a team embodies these values. Throughout the build, research and competition process, FLL robotics teams deal with real-world application of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts and hands-on problem solving, as well as honing research and presentation skills. Team CRyptonite students and adult volunteers organize and run the Katy Qualifier Tournament as part of their commitment to community service and to promoting FIRST robotics to inspire future scientists and engineers. The team also founded the FLL programs at Beck JH and Cinco Ranch JH and currently mentor the two Cinco Ranch Junior High FLL teams. The Katy FLL Qualifier Tournament, one of 800 held around the world, was the first step in the regional robotics competition process, which culminates in the Southwest (Texas/New Mexico) FLL Championship Tournament. The winning team from this Championship Tournament will participate in the 2013 FLL World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri in April. Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background

check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The December 9th concert, “Christmas around the World,” was the nineteenth year that the congregations of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have combined for a Christmas concert. The collaboration began in 1994, at the invitation of Father Jack Dinkins, when new neighbors, the Katy Stake Center, was built across the street. This year’s choir was made up of 120 voices from both congregations, with the addition of a children’s choir of nearly 100, plus Epiphany’s small Contemporary Choir, as well as a community orchestra. The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store! During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community Sing-Along. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”

Katy Elks Host Annual Best Buddies Christmas Dance Friday, December 7th was the date - Katy Elks lodge was the place - food, fun & dancing were the order of the night as 100 Katy ISD Best Buddies participants converged to claim an evening created just for them. The Best Buddies program, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit national organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Since 1993, Best Buddies High Schools has paired students with IDD in one-to-one friendships with high school students. By introducing Best Buddies into public and private high schools, participants are crossing the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without. Today, Best Buddies boasts more than 900 high school chapters worldwide. In Katy ISD we have six high schools that participate in the Best Buddies program and the Katy Elks lodge Christmas and end-of-school dances. Since this was the Christmas dance, it would have not been complete without a visit from Santa, an event eagerly awaited by all present. Katy Elks member Don Accord subbed for the North Pole Santa and was quite a hit as each student present had the opportunity to have his/her picture taken with him and received a copy to take home.
a style for every point of view™
Pizza, sandwiches, cupcakes and cookies were a few of the food offerings that helped fill everyone, students and adults alike. Butter Bartek, Katy Elks lodge member and local entertainer provided music for dancing and even managed time for several dances with some of the students. She was a big hit and obviously enjoyed herself as well. Kelly Minnick, Youth Committee Chair, organized the evening.
