NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS NCCIA has received a number of complaints from homeowners who reside on or near Rustic Knolls. The complaints center around motorist speeding on the street, ignoring stop signs and going around school buses that are loading and unloading students. This is a very serious matter that we intend to take seriously. We do not have sidewalks in NC, which makes it doubly dangerous when motorists speed or run stop signs. We have placed our Constables on notice to closely monitor that area and ticket traffic violators. It’s my understanding that they have already written a number of tickets during December. So this is your notice: OBEY THE TRAFFIC LAWS IN THE SUBDIVISION OR PAY THE PRICE VIA A TRAFFIC TICKET. As a general rule, we do not have many problems with speeders in NC, but it happens. When we see something like what is occurring on Rustic Knolls, it is normally due to a few hardheads (mostly likely adult and juvenile) that live in the area that think they do not have to obey traffic laws. Hopefully, paying out some hard earned money to Harris County in the form of a ticket will change their driving habits. With the winter weather in place, it is easy to see that we still have many trees in NC that need trimming. This is the time of the year to do it. An ice storm or high winds can easily cause major damage to untrimmed trees and even damage homes. Trees look much better when trimmed. It really does not cost that much to have them professionally done and once trimmed, they are fine for many years. There are several homes in NC that we are citing because the overgrowth of the trees causes the property to look like a jungle. This is inexcusable and the legal fees will be much greater than the cost of trimming if the homeowners do not take appropriate action. Thus far, the Board is very pleased to see the way the biking/walking trail on Mason Creek has been getting great usage. Many of the homeowners on the west side of the creek have put up new fences or made nice repairs to their exiting fences. They look great. Perhaps those of you who live on Shillington on the east side of the creek need to take a hard look at your fences. There are some pretty ugly fences along there that are long past replacement time. We will be asking SCS to start citing for broken fences in the spring. We wish to thank the residents of NC who did a wonderful job of decorating the outsides of their homes. Lots of very nice lighting this year! It takes a lot of work putting out those decorations and we certainly appreciate everyone’s efforts. We will be giving out gift certificates to the best decorated homes and those will be named in the next newsletter. Don Mach NCCIA President and Legal Liaison

Foreclosures in Nottingham Country
The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 12/4/12 ADDRESS OWNER 1327 Dominion Central Mortgage 402 Sancroft GMAC Mortgage 1514 Hannington Bank of America 502 Sancroft Veteran Affairs 510 Rennie Chase Mortgage 1630 Hoveden Bank of America 20322 Kingsland Wells Fargo 1019 Barkston Bank of New York, Trustee 1107 Pittsford Ct Bank of New York, Trustee 20507 Manette U.S. Bank Presently, we have more foreclosures than we can recall over the past eight years. Several of these are under contract and should closed soon. Many of the new ones have been delinquent with NCCIA for many years and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly with most of the new owners doing a lot of good repairs to the properties and thus enhancing values throughout the neighborhood. Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure.

How to address the Board directly The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. To read the full announcement from the Texas Education Agency, visit http://www.tea.state.tx.us/news_release.aspx?id=2147510194 (website).

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Fat Tuesday marks the end of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many traditions celebrate Fat Tuesday with the eating of pancakes, giving the occasion the name ‘Pancake Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day.’ Pancakes contain flour, eggs and sugar, which were once forbidden rich foods during Lent.

Katy Churches Combine to Celebrate Christmas around the World The December 9th concert, “Christmas around the World,” was the nineteenth year that the congregations of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have combined for a Christmas concert. The collaboration began in 1994, at the invitation of Father Jack Dinkins, when new neighbors, the Katy Stake Center, was built across the street. This year’s choir was made up of 120 voices from both congregations, with the addition of a children’s choir of nearly 100, plus Epiphany’s small Contemporary Choir, as well as a community orchestra.

The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Adult Conversation Group
Real conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.” If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All participants are encouraged to offer topics for the group and approximately a week before the meeting, a tentative agenda of topics will be disseminated. For further information or to get on the agenda email list, please call Gary at 281-578-1036 or email conversation11@comcast.net.
