Katy Elks Host Annual Best Buddies Christmas Dance Friday, December 7th was the date - Katy Elks lodge was the place - food, fun & dancing were the order of the night as 100 Katy ISD Best Buddies participants converged to claim an evening created just for them. The Best Buddies program, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit national organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for oneto-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Since 1993, Best Buddies High Schools has paired students with IDD in one-to-one friendships with high school students. By introducing Best Buddies into public and private high schools, participants are crossing the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without. Today, Best Buddies boasts more than 900 high school chapters worldwide. In Katy ISD we have six high schools that participate in the Best Buddies program and the Katy Elks lodge Christmas and end-of-school dances. Since this was the Christmas dance, it would have not been complete without a visit from Santa, an event eagerly awaited by all present. Katy Elks member Don Accord subbed for the North Pole Santa and was quite a hit as each student present had the opportunity to have his/her picture taken with him and received a copy to take home. Pizza, sandwiches, cupcakes and cookies were a few of the food offerings that helped fill everyone, students and adults alike. Butter Bartek, Katy Elks lodge member and local entertainer provided music for dancing and even managed time for several dances with some of the students. She was a big hit and obviously enjoyed herself as well. Kelly Minnick, Youth Committee Chair, organized the evening. Students left with the anticipation of their next visit to our lodge for the end-of-school dance in May.

Your best bets are: almonds, walnuts and pecans. • Eggs • Fresh fruit and vegetables • Lean protein: Fish, poultry and beans keep saturated fat to a minimum. • Ground chia seed: Packed with protein, fiber and a good balance of essential fatty acids. Add a spoonful to smoothies or oatmeal for a nutty flavor similar to flax seed. • Sweet potatoes: Try them baked with a sprinkle of walnuts and cinnamon great for breakfast or a snack. • Fluids: Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! • Avocado: Fats should make up about 25% of your daily diet when you’re training, so avocados are an easy way to get the healthy fat.

Celebrate Mardi Gras!

832-363-3772

Translated from the French, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday.” In short, it’s the last day before the traditional Catholic Lenten fasting season leading up to Easter Sunday. For those cities that celebrate it - most famously New Orleans, Louisiana - Mardi Gras means feasts, multiple parades, elaborate costumes and parties.

Mardi Gras Origin Some scholars trace Mardi Gras’ roots to the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival, which was held in mid-February. Like many other pagan holidays, early Church leaders incorporated elements of the celebration into the new faith rather than risk alienating converted followers. As Catholicism spread across Europe, so did the Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras Comes to America By the Middle Ages, Mardi Gras or “Carnival,” had become a major holiday in France and early French explorers brought the tradition to the New World when establishing settlements in their explorations of the Mississippi River. With its strong French roots, New Orleans naturally evolved into one of the premier Mardi Gras destinations in the world. Mardi Gras: The Religious roots The Mardi Gras kicks off on the Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas on January 6th, also known as Twelfth Night or Three Kings Day, celebrating the arrival of the three wise men and their gifts to the baby Jesus. The season ends promptly at midnight on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. What’s in a name: Eating a calf The name “Fat Tuesday” comes from the tradition of eating a slaughtered calf on the final day of Carnival. These days, though, that definition has expanded to include feasting on pretty much any rich fatty food. Mardi Gras Around the world Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated in many cities around the world besides New Orleans, including Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Nice,

France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But many small towns and municipalities celebrate Mardi Gras as well, including the tiny community of Rubonia, Florida. The Universal Studios Florida theme park also throws a Mardi Gras celebration on weeknights from February to April, featuring parades and concerts by national acts.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. STAAR SCORES WILL NOT AFFECT COURSE GRADES FOR 2012 - 2013 Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test.

KATY ISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES CAMPAIGN Together we have raised $16,199 for grocery gift cards to support 293 Katy ISD families for the holidays. For that, we thank you! Many blessings to you and your families.

KATY HIGH SCHOOL

“Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. KATY THEATRE ARTS BOOSTER CLUB BLANKET PROJECT The Katy High School Theatre Arts Booster Club has begun a service project to donate fleece blankets to residents at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Facility and the Heritage Park Nursing Home in Katy. Students and parents involved with the Katy High School Theatre Arts Program put the blankets together during rehearsals of their musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The blankets are cut from soft, fleece fabric and the edges are hand tied into a decorative fringe. “We have always helped out with other community service projects in the past, but this is our first solo project,” said Katy High School Theatre Director Rachel Smith. The idea for making blankets came to her when she saw blanket kits on sale at a local craft store. “I realized it would be cheaper if we actually cut the fabric ourselves,” Smith said, “instead of buying kits.” The Theatre students decided to donate their blankets to residents at two local facilities because one of the senior theatre students had a grandparent at the Cinco Ranch facility. “I think students providing service to others in their community shows our kids how blessed they are,” Smith said, “and how necessary it is for them to think of others.” The students had a goal of delivering the blankets to the residents of the communities themselves on December 10th. RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was

established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Katy Churches Combine to Celebrate Christmas around the World The December 9th concert, “Christmas around the World,” was the nineteenth year that the congregations of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have combined for a Christmas concert. The collaboration began in 1994, at the invitation of Father Jack Dinkins, when new neighbors, the Katy Stake Center, was built across the street. This year’s choir was made up of 120 voices from both congregations, with the addition of a children’s choir of nearly 100, plus Epiphany’s small Contemporary Choir, as well as a community orchestra. The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store! During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community Sing-Along. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”
