Happy Valentine’s! HARRIS COUNTY TO PERFORM TELGE ROAD MEDIAN RENOVATIONS IN JANUARY 2013 (Previously posted on HOA website)

Pursuant to the Association’s continually request for alterations to the Telge Road medians to allow for better view of on-coming traffic in the turn lanes and to address continual damage to the medians caused by large trucks making u-turns, Harris County has agreed to begin work to provide needed assistance. Construction should have began the week of January 7, 2013 weather permitting, to add concrete to the median end caps at the Aberdeen Trails Drive intersection, Abergreen Trail intersection and Aberdeen Green Drive intersection. There will also be a south bound turn lane constructed at the Telge Road median at the Aberdeen Green Drive/Bonneyview Drive intersection to assist in the flow of traffic, deter vehicles from sitting in the turn area, etc. These projects may take several weeks, so please be cautious of ongoing construction and County personnel during this process and adhere to construction traffic sign warnings.

2013 ASSESSMENTS NOW DUE

The 2013 annual homeowner assessment is now due and will be considered late on February 1, 2013, resulting in additional late fees. A statement with payment coupon has been mailed to all owners, so if you have not received the information, please contact management as soon as possible. You can also find a summary of the collection policy and the 2013 approved budget on the website as well. If you are in a financial position preventing you from paying the assessment in full by January 31, 2013, please send a written request for a payment plan either by mail, fax or email to the management company prior to the late date to avoid additional fees. If your account is currently delinquent, the balance reflected on the statement mailed to you may not include all pending late or legal fees. Please contact management for the most up to date balance.

Peanut Butter Brownie Trifle

Ingredients • 1 fudge brownie mix (13-inch x 9-inch pan size) • 1 package (10 ounces) peanut butter chips • 2 packages (13 ounces each) miniature peanut butter cups • 4 cups cold 2% milk • 2 packages (5.1 ounces each) instant vanilla pudding mix • 1 cup creamy peanut butter • 4 teaspoons vanilla extract • 3 cartons (8 ounces each) frozen whipped topping, thawed

Directions • Prepare brownie batter according to package directions; stir in peanut butter chips. • Bake in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs (do not over bake). • Cool on a wire rack; cut into 3/4-in. pieces. • Cut peanut butter cups in half; set aside 1/3 cup for garnish. • In a large bowl, whisk milk and pudding mixes for 2 minutes (mixture will be thick). • Add peanut butter and vanilla; mix well. • Fold in 1-1/2 cartons whipped topping. • Place a third of the brownies in a 5-qt. glass bowl; top with a third of the remaining peanut butter cups. • Spoon a third of the pudding mixture over the top. • Repeat layers twice. Cover with remaining whipped topping; garnish with reserved peanut butter cups. • Refrigerate until chilled. Yield: 20 servings (1 cup each). Nutrition Facts: 1 cup equals 680 calories, 38 g fat (15 g saturated fat), 28 mg cholesterol, 547 mg sodium, 73 g carbohydrate, 3 g fiber, 13 g protein.

Apricot Chicken Diabetic Friendly

Ingredients • 1 tablespoon apricot preserves • 1 tablespoon Russian or French salad dressing • Pinch ginger, optional • 1 bone-in chicken breast half (8 ounces) • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions In a small bowl, combine preserves, salad dressing and ginger if desired; set aside. Place chicken in a greased 8-in. square baking pan; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with apricot mixture. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 50-55 minutes or until chicken juices run clear. Yield: 1 serving.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES

The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.   This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problem-resolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.   The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the

number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.   The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.   Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. DISTRICT RECOMMENDS VACCINATIONS, TREATMENT IN WAKE OF FLU ACTIVITY

In response to reports of the influenza virus throughout the state, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is joining the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in urging students, staff and community members to receive a flu vaccination and taking additional steps to protect against the flu.

According to the DSHS, each season’s flu vaccine provides protection against three strains of flu. Researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the current vaccine is well matched with strains of the flu in circulation. “Since prevention of disease is the best way to protect the health and wellness of CFISD students, staff and community, the CFISD health services department supports the CDC and DSHS recommendation that all people aged 6 months and older be immunized against influenza,” said Bevin Gordon, CFISD director of health services. As of Dec. 3rd, the CDC reported that approximately 37 percent of the U.S. population aged 6 months and older had been vaccinated, with children showing the highest rate of vaccination (45 percent). The DSHS recommends a vaccination for everyone 6 months or older, especially those in the high-risk groups - children, those aged 65 and older, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions. In addition to vaccinations, Gordon and the health services team are encouraging parents and students to protect themselves and others by washing their hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home from school if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. The third annual Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament, held Dec. 6th - 8th at CFISD high schools and the Berry Center, raised more than $22,500 for the “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD for innovative and creative teacher training. High School Drama Takes Third in TAPPS Competition: The high school drama class recently completed a successful run of “The Great Pandemonium,” by Pat Cook, entertaining audiences with both in-class and evening performances. Since many of the roles were double cast and the performers took turns playing in the various shows, no two shows were alike, giving each performance an exciting “life of its own.” When the cast and crew took the show on the road to compete at the TAPPS Regional One Act Play Contest, the run culminated with an impressive third place finish. Director Dia Moore was pleased to report that in addition to the accolades for the show, the cast and crew won an extraordinary number of individual awards. Jordan Wandix was named Best Actor. Bailey Comeaux was named to the All Star Cast. Marya Gray, Ben Holman and Kaitlyn Miracle were named to the Honorable Mention Cast. Chris Ramirez

We will offer several evaluation days so we can check on their skills so we can even out the teams. The dates for these are February 25th, 26th and 28th, between 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM. Also, on March 2nd at 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon. It only takes a few minutes for us to run them through the drills and then we will contact each player about practices. After March 4th, we cannot guarantee a place on a team. They will practice for one hour a week on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Practices begin the week of March 18th and the league runs through May 18th. The cost will be $75. Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club Registration for Middle and High School Athletes

The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club is registering athletes for the 2013 summer track season. Elementary students up to 6th grade should register during February and the first week of March. Middle and high school athletes can also register, but should compete after their school season is over. The non-profit, 501(c)(3) club is affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF) and provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin. Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side since February 14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games every Friday night except holidays. There Is No Smoking Allowed During All Bingo Games. They have a jackpot game of $750. Maximum prize giveaways of $2,500, allowed by law, are given away every Bingo Night!
