Annual Homeowners Fees I apologize for the error in the January Crier. Your HOA fees are $370 as shown on your statement. Your annual fees of $370 were due on January 1, 2013 and were considered past due February 1, 2013. If you were unable to pay your dues by that date, CONTACT CREST MANAGEMENT IMMEDIATELY. This assessment must be paid immediately in order to avoid additional fees and legal charges. Failure to do so will cause additional charges and possible loss of your home.

Garage Sale Dates

Garage sales are only allowed on the first Saturday in March, June and October. The garage sale dates for 2013 are March 2nd, June 1st and October 5th. These dates are advertised in local papers and our signs are placed at the entrances early in the week of the sale. Garage sales are not permitted on any other dates. Fines may be assessed for failure to abide by this rule.

How To Get Involved Have you ever wanted to have more from your community? Have you ever wished that Concord Bridge could be like so many other subdivisions out there where there are community events, fundraisers and a wonderful relationship with your neighbors? In order to make all these things a possibility in our neighborhood, it takes one simple thing . . . YOU! We need the whole community to be involved in all the activities available to us. Here, we will listen to your ideas and let you know what responsibilities may be involved. We will also give you the opportunity to volunteer to participate, chair a group or just sign up to get more information or be added to a Concord Bridge e-mailing list, so you too can be kept up to date on the opportunities we all hope will one day occur in our neighborhood. Are you the one that your friends, family, co workers or neighbors come to for information? We need people who are in the “know” in the community. People, who can contribute events, festivals, free activities and any other item of note, like a new business near our neighborhood. If you would like to help keep your neighbors informed and entertained with your knowledge, then this is the opportunity for you to contribute to our newsletter. Articles are subject to approval by the board of directors.

Copperfield/Bear Creek Kessler’s home

Christmas Decoration Judging Walter and Wendy Kessler, with their children, drove through the neighborhood on Saturday, December 15th, looking at all of the creative decorations in Concord Bridge. A big thank you is in order. It’s fun, but a lot of time and consideration is involved. The winners are: 6143 Cape Hatteras Dr., 6327 Timbo Lane, 6318 Lipps Lane, 6203 Conlan Bay, 6322 Timbo Lane, 6110 Wolfboro Dr., 6119 Summerville Ln., 13518 Bridgewalk Cove and 14034 Sommersworth. Pictures of each of these homes are included in this newsletter. In addition to looking at all of the great decorations, the Kesslers decorated their own home. We have also included a picture of the Kessler’s home.

Deed Restrictions Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home.

Concord Bridge Pet Hotline The pet hotline at www.concordbridgepethotline.com is no longer in service. You can still contact them at 281-468-9414 and on the new Facebook account, Concord Bridge Pet Hotline. You can use this source to report lost and found animals. This has been a great help in returning lost and found animals to their owners. If you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call 281-468-9414. Please note, Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard.

Vacation Watch Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/ pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.

Please keep the ReStore in mind for both donations and for purchases. Donation pick-up is available for large items or large quantities. All of the proceeds are used by Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing for deserving families. Visit the ReStore at 13350 Jones Rd. 77070 NorthHouston or call 832-327-1120. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through February. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS! Are your financial business needs in order?

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

Innovative Ideas for Small Business Retirement Plans & Their Owners

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor.

This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling.

Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes - soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country.

The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission.

The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior.
For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

DISTRICT RECOMMENDS VACCINATIONS, TREATMENT IN WAKE OF FLU ACTIVITY In response to reports of the influenza virus throughout the state, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is joining the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in urging students, staff and community members to receive a flu vaccination and taking additional steps to protect against the flu.

e y

According to the DSHS, each season’s flu vaccine provides protection against three strains of flu. Researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the current vaccine is well matched with strains of the flu in circulation. “Since prevention of disease is the best way to protect the health and wellness of CFISD students, staff and community, the CFISD health

services department supports the CDC and DSHS recommendation that all people aged 6 months and older be immunized against influenza,” said Bevin Gordon, CFISD director of health services. As of Dec. 3rd, the CDC reported that approximately 37 percent of the U.S. population aged 6 months and older had been vaccinated, with children showing the highest rate of vaccination (45 percent). The DSHS recommends a vaccination for everyone 6 months or older, especially those in the high-risk groups - children, those aged 65 and older, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions.

In addition to vaccinations, Gordon and the health services team are encouraging parents and students to protect themselves and others by washing their hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home from school if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. For more information on the flu, including a vaccine finder, please visit TexasFlu.org. The 24-team tournament was hosted by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) with the goal of engaging the entire community in order to promote basketball, generate community spirits and raise funds for the CFEF. South Grand Prairie High School won the tournament, while Langham Creek High School placed second. North Cypress Medical Center served as the event underwriter for the third consecutive year. Methodist Willowbrook Hospital was a platinum sponsor; The Howard Hughes Corporation/Bridgeland was a gold sponsor; Burg Insurance Agency and Pride and Recognition, Inc., were silver sponsors and Wainwright Dental & Associates, P.C. was a bronze sponsor. “The tournament was a success for the third consecutive year,” said Marie Holmes, CFEF executive director. “As the Cypress Hoops Invitational continues to grow, so does the amount we are able to raise for Donate to Educate. 2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy Falls High School Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm

Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!!

The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held

Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our

HFAC Announces auditions for Leaving Iowa

A comedy about the family vacations you’d like to forget! Houston Family Arts Center announces auditions for its Main Stage production of Leaving Iowa written by Tim Clue and Spike Manton. An annual trek to Civil War Battlefields would be excruciating enough for young Don without the wrong turns and awful roadside attractions. But as an adult, Don takes a more understanding view of both those vacations and his father. This folksy and nostalgic comedy about family vacations will delight anyone who’s ever sat in a car for more than an hour. AUDITION INFORMATION Auditions for Leaving Iowa will take place on Saturday, Feb 9, 2013, from 1-4 PM by appointment at HFAC located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070. Actors can make an appointment by emailing auditions@houstonfac. com for an audition time slot. Please be sure to include your desired role and phone number in your request.

FOODS TO SUPER CHARGE YOUR WORKOUT! Whatever your workout or sport, these “energy-packed eats” will help you maintain steady energy throughout the week and boost it during your toughest workouts. • Whole grains: Whole oats oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, millet or farro. Your body needs the fast energy of carbs during heavy training cycles. Whole grains are good sources of protein too. • Nuts: A handful of unsalted, natural nuts is a great quick energy source just before a workout. Avoid peanuts, macadamia nuts and cashews. Your best bets are: almonds, walnuts and pecans.

• Eggs • Fresh fruit and vegetables • Lean protein: Fish, poultry and beans keep saturated fat to a minimum. • Ground chia seed: Packed with protein, fiber and a good balance of essential fatty acids. Add a spoonful to smoothies or oatmeal for a nutty flavor similar to flax seed. • Sweet potatoes: Try them baked with a sprinkle of walnuts and cinnamon - great for breakfast or a snack. • Fluids: Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! • Avocado: Fats should make up about 25% of your daily diet when you’re training, so avocados are an easy way to get the healthy fat.

EASY VEGAN VALENTINE SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE! As a vegetarian, it’s difficult to find sweets that are eggless and also dairy-free. But it’s not impossible! Be sure to surprise your valentine with this super easy and vegan sugar cookie recipe: • 1 cup plain white flour • 1/2 cup or slightly less granulated sugar • 1/2 cup SmartBalance or soy butter • 1 tsp. baking powder • 1 tsp. vanilla extract Directions 1. Pre-heat the oven to 345 degrees. 2. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl using a spatula or an electric whisk until it is fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract and thoroughly mix. 3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. 4. Add the flour to the creamed butter and mix until a soft dough is formed. 5. Shape into a log and wrap in cling film or foil and refrigerate for an hour or overnight. 6. Tear off small amounts of dough and shape into balls spacing them well apart on a baking sheet, as they will spread in the oven. 7. Bake for 15-20 minutes depending on your oven. Ease them off using a palate knife - they will be a little soft still but that is fine. 8. Allow them to cool on a rack for at least an hour. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Celebrate Mardi Gras!

Translated from the French, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday.” In short, it’s the last day before the traditional Catholic Lenten fasting season leading up to Easter Sunday. For those cities that celebrate it - most famously New Orleans, Louisiana - Mardi Gras means feasts, multiple parades, elaborate costumes and parties. Mardi Gras Origin Some scholars trace Mardi Gras’ roots to the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival, which was held in mid-February. Like many other pagan holidays, early Church leaders incorporated elements of the celebration into the new faith rather than risk alienating converted followers. As Catholicism spread across Europe, so did the Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras Comes to America By the Middle Ages, Mardi Gras or “Carnival,” had become a major holiday in France and early French explorers brought the tradition to the New World when establishing settlements in their explorations of the Mississippi River. With its strong French roots, New Orleans naturally evolved into one of the premier Mardi Gras destinations in the world. Mardi Gras: The Religious roots The Mardi Gras kicks off on the Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas on January 6th, also known as Twelfth Night or Three Kings Day, celebrating the arrival of the three wise men and their gifts to the baby Jesus. The season ends promptly at midnight on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. What’s in a name: Eating a calf The name “Fat Tuesday” comes from the tradition of eating a slaughtered calf on the final day of Carnival. These days, though, that definition has expanded to include feasting on pretty much any rich fatty food. Mardi Gras Around the world Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated in many cities around the world besides New Orleans, including Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Nice, France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But many small towns and municipalities celebrate Mardi Gras as well, including the tiny community of Rubonia, Florida. The Universal Studios Florida theme park also throws a Mardi Gras celebration on weeknights from February to April, featuring parades and concerts by national acts.
