HOW TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY ON A BUDGET Step 1 For your kids. Do what you can to make this day special, especially if it falls on a weekday. Cut red hearts out of construction paper and cover your child’s door with them, creating a “Heart Attack.” Or, leave clues on the paper hearts for a scavenger hunt around the house, ending up in the kitchen with pink pancakes for breakfast. Tuck a handmade Valentine in their backpack or lunch to discover at school. Give your kids an “I Love You” coupon book with cool trade-ins for a “Get out of chores free” card or a “Stay up 1/2 hour later” coupon. Step 2 For your kids’ classroom party. The dollar store is a wonderful place to purchase holiday-related items. Rather than pick up a pack of plain old paper punch-out Valentines, try something different. Buy a few packs of themed pencils or erasers (usually sold in packs of 8 or 12) to pass out. Look for inexpensive Valentine candies to contribute or volunteer to coordinate the games, which is often much less expensive than distributing treats. Step 3 For work. Most workplaces have some sort of treat table on Valentine’s Day. Do your part by bringing treats that you can make at home that are inexpensive yet plentiful. Try making marshmallow rice cereal treats or cake mix cookies instead of swinging by the bakery to buy expensive goodies frosted in red and white. Another option is to volunteer to bring the napkins, plates or cups for the office snack table. Often these items can be purchased for less than the cost of treats and you are still contributing. If your workplace is having an actual party, volunteer for the games and contribute your creativity instead of food. Step 4 For your spouse/loved one. Actions and words can convey much more to a loving spouse than expensive jewelry and fancy dinners. Tuck a love note into their jacket pocket, purse or lunch bag for them to find. Gifts can be inexpensive and meaningful without costing a lot. Purchase a new book by their favorite author with a coupon for a lazy uninterrupted afternoon for reading. Give them some bubble bath with the promise of a full hour in the tub, alone. A CD mix of their favorite tunes or an assortment of love songs will be a sweet and thoughtful gift as well. Write a love note written from the heart. Let your spouse/loved one know how much you appreciate all they do and how attractive you find them. Write anything else that is special and tender between you.

The Arts at Cy-Christian High School Drama Takes Third in TAPPS Competition: The high school drama class recently completed a successful run of “The Great Pandemonium,” by Pat Cook, entertaining audiences with both in-class and evening performances. Since many of the roles were double cast and the performers took turns playing in the various shows, no two shows were alike, giving each performance an exciting “life of its own.” When the cast and crew took the show on the road to compete at the TAPPS Regional One Act Play Contest, the run culminated with an impressive third place finish. Director Dia Moore was pleased to report that in addition to the accolades for the show, the cast and crew won an extraordinary number of individual awards. Jordan Wandix was named Best Actor. Bailey Comeaux was named to the All Star Cast. Marya Gray, Ben Holman and Kaitlyn Miracle were named to the Honorable Mention Cast. Chris Ramirez and Abby Rangel were named to the All Star Crew. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of “The Great Pandemonium” for a job well done! Cy-Christian Art Secondary art students completed paintings of landscapes in America. Art teacher Michele Bennett commented, “It was a joy to watch as my students were met with technique challenges, successfully completed their project and were proud of their accomplishments. It is amazing to watch a student gain confidence in their ability to use new and different tools to create and reflect God’s creation.”

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed December 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event, please contact Marie Holmes at marie@thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

DISTRICT RECOMMENDS VACCINATIONS, TREATMENT IN WAKE OF FLU ACTIVITY
In response to reports of the influenza virus throughout the state, CypressFairbanks ISD is joining the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in urging students, staff and community members to receive a flu vaccination and taking additional steps to protect against the flu.
For more information on the flu, including a vaccine finder, please visit TexasFlu.org. To find information on where to receive a flu shot, contact a health care provider, a local health department or dial 2-1-1.
Cypress Hoops Invitational
Langham Creek High School junior, Jerome Segura, floats a shot amid a group of South Grand Prairie defenders during the championship game of the Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament.
According to the DSHS, each season’s flu vaccine provides protection against three strains of flu. Researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that the current vaccine is well matched with strains of the flu in circulation. “Since prevention of disease is the best way to protect the health and wellness of CFISD students, staff and community, the CFISD health services department supports the CDC and DSHS recommendation that all people aged 6 months and older be immunized against influenza,” said Bevin Gordon, CFISD director of health services. As of Dec. 3rd, the CDC reported that approximately 37 percent of the U.S. population aged 6 months and older had been vaccinated, with children showing the highest rate of vaccination (45 percent). The DSHS recommends a vaccination for everyone 6 months or older, especially those in the high-risk groups - children, those aged 65 and older, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions. In addition to vaccinations, Gordon and the health services team are encouraging parents and students to protect themselves and others by washing their hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home from school if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms until they are feverfree for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL BRINGS IN MORE THAN $22,500 FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The third annual Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament, held Dec. 6th - 8th at CFISD high schools and the Berry Center, raised more than $22,500 for the “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD for innovative and creative teacher training. The 24-team tournament was hosted by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) with the goal of engaging the entire community in order to promote basketball, generate community spirits and raise funds for the CFEF. South Grand Prairie High School won the tournament, while Langham Creek High School placed second.

Methodist Willowbrook Hospital was a platinum sponsor; The Howard Hughes Corporation/Bridgeland was a gold sponsor; Burg Insurance Agency and Pride and Recognition, Inc., were silver sponsors and Wainwright Dental & Associates, P.C. was a bronze sponsor. “The tournament was a success for the third consecutive year,” said Marie Holmes, CFEF executive director. “As the Cypress Hoops Invitational continues to grow, so does the amount we are able to raise for Donate to Educate. We thank the incredible sponsors who will help us to grow the tournament into the future.”

SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL SEEKING COMMUNITY MENTORS
Smith Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes to an hour a week to mentor/ meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. Mentors must attend a one-time, district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Once you have completed the training and background check, an administrator at Smith will work with you to match you with a student who would be the best fit for you. If you enjoy working with children and making a true difference in people’s lives, the mentor program at Smith Middle School is just for you!! We are

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB SUPPORTS GOVERNOR’S PROJECT AND CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
For Texas-Oklahoma District Governor Brian O’Hara’s Governor’s Project this year, Cypress Ranch Key Club has been excited to support The B.R.O. Project (Brothers Reaching Out) benefiting Children’s Miracle Network. Starting in October, the club has done several projects to benefit Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital. In response to a plea from a parent with strong connections to Texas Children’s Hospital, our club learned that DVD’s were stolen from the treatment rooms at the hospital. We had a rush collection drive for children’s DVD’s in good condition to take to the hospital. In a week’s time, our club collected nearly 200 DVD’s.

At the club’s overnight Lock-in in October, there were movies, games and food, but most importantly, there were stations for different service projects. One of the stations was a blanket-making station. That night, Key Club members made a total of eight homemade “no sew” fleece blankets to go to the sick children at the hospital. In early December, club officers held a Holiday Social at Willowbrook Mall. After eating together in the Food Court, the group went to Build-A-Bear Workshop and made several stuffed animals to give to the children at Texas Children’s. The club also used club funds and donated gift cards to purchase toys to take to the hospital. A week or so before Christmas, Cy-Ranch club president Hannah Bielefeldt dropped off all of the toys, blankets and teddy bears to the Texas Children’s Hospital’s West Campus hospital in Katy, Texas. We are hopeful that these donations will brighten the day of some of the sick children spending time in the hospital over the holidays this year.

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB SUPPORTS PAJAMA DRIVE FOR HOMELESS
During the month of November and December, Cypress Ranch Key Club collected pajamas to benefit the Star of Hope, a local nonprofit helping Houston’s homeless men, women and children. The club participated in support of one of the club’s favorite restaurants, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt. Houston’s 11 Orange Leaf locations kicked off the pajama drive in midNovember to benefit the Star of Hope. Cypress Ranch Key Club was excited to collect new pajamas in support of the Orange Leaf drive. The Key Club held a Pajama Social at the Orange Leaf location in Cypress on November 13th. This Orange Leaf store is owned by Wanda Abel, mother of Cypress Ranch Key Club member McKenna Abel. On November 13th, club members who brought pajama donations to Orange Leaf received a free 3 ounce frozen yogurt. Close to 100 pairs of pajamas were donated that night. Many Key Club members who couldn’t attend the social at Orange Leaf wanted to help, so pajama donations were accepted at school through midDecember. Nearly another 100 pajamas were collected at school for the homeless men, women and children of the Houston area. All total, right at 200 pairs of new pajamas were donated. Of the eleven Houston-area Orange Leaf locations, the Cypress store collected the most pajamas! Because of their support of the collection drive, Cypress Ranch Key Club members were invited to participate in the

In late November, twenty Key Club members traveled to Village on the Park nursing home and spent an afternoon helping them decorate for the holidays. Members decorated multiple trees, hung garland and wreathes and met with some of the residents. Village on the Park is a favorite destination of our club. We held our first ever “Senior Prom” at their facility last spring. A different way the Key Club was able to spread holiday cheer was through the selling of giant coloring books. The huge coloring books had themes ranging from dinosaurs, fairy tales and nursery rhymes, ABC’s and 123’s and Christmas. The coloring books were offered not only to the 658-member club but to all of the staff at the school as well. They were wildly popular and dozens were sold to be given as holiday gifts to the children in their lives. The Key Club participated in a Toy Drive to benefit Cy Hope, so underprivileged children in our school district can have Christmas presents when they otherwise wouldn’t. Cy Hope paired up with the Ladies of Bridgeland to pull off the amazing drive. In lieu of the usual December Key Club meeting, the club held a social to not only end the calendar year with something fun for the members, but to collect hundreds of toys to donate to children in need that deserve to have presents on Christmas morning. One of the most rewarding projects that Cypress Ranch Key Club did this holiday season was helping to adopt four families for Christmas. These families all have a child receiving treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital for some type of cancer, many leukemia patients. The members of the Club first donated Walmart gift cards in preparation for our shopping trip. Once the club received the Christmas wish lists from the all of the children, their siblings and parents and club members took a shopping trip to Walmart to buy all of the presents for the families. Later, members helped gift wrap the presents along with the family who coordinated the project. It was so satisfying and heartwarming for Key Club members to help these families who have so many other things to worry about this Christmas season. The Key Club at Cypress Ranch not only does many sorts of events during the holiday, but the club’s members are ready to volunteer and make a difference throughout the year.

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB LANDSCAPES HABITAT HOMES
The Cypress Ranch Key Club spent a December Saturday working at Habitat for Humanity. Working at Habitat for Humanity is one of this Key Club’s most favorite events to work every year. Twentyfive club members and five adults (parents and faculty advisors) spent the day in the Hamill Crossing neighborhood working alongside both current homeowners and those working on their sweat equity hours and planning to move into their homes soon. Habitat for Humanity has many volunteers working on these houses each Saturday, with many different things to do until each house in the neighborhood is completely finished.

On our most recent workday, our club landscaped five yards for residents who have recently moved into their homes. We did everything from soil preparation to watering in the beautiful new landscaping. Most of our club members had never “dug in the dirt.” By the end of the day, everyone had become pros at making flowerbeds and planting flowers, as well as planting trees that will over time become almost 40 feet high! While working, some of the current and future homeowners came out to help with the landscaping on their yards. Working on the yards took a lot of hard work. The students learned about the different types of shoves and hoes, which ones to use for a certain tasks, all about black landscaping cloth to prevent weeds and how each layer of dirt and mulch should be laid down. Some of the stronger boys in the group were chosen for tree duty and dug huge holes for a tree for each yard. Members hauled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of topsoil, mulch and river rock.

During the lunch break, Key Club members were able to sign the studs of a house that had just been framed. This is a favorite tradition that our club members love to do on every trip to Habitat. Members wrote little blessings and scripture on the home’s studs with permanent markers. These wishes to the future homeowner will soon be covered with sheetrock but will remain a part of the house forever. At the end of the day, Key Club members were able to view the beautiful product of their efforts. Members learned so much about various plants, trees and flowers. Members had a chance to interact with the homeowners and make new friends. Even though everyone left a little dirty and very sore, all are looking forward to our next workday at Habitat for Humanity in northwest Harris County. The Key Club has held various fundraisers during our fall semester and recently presented Habitat for Humanity with a check for $1,000 to help with the Youth Build house now under construction. For more information about Cy-Ranch Key Club, go to www.ranchkey.com or contact Faculty Advisor Jennifer Hydes at Jennifer.hydes@cfisd.net (email).

Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! HFAC Announces auditions for Leaving Iowa
A comedy about the family vacations you’d like to forget! Houston Family Arts Center announces auditions for its Main Stage production of Leaving Iowa written by Tim Clue and Spike Manton. An annual trek to Civil War Battlefields would be excruciating enough for young Don without the wrong turns and awful roadside attractions. But as an adult, Don takes a more understanding view of both those vacations and his father. This folksy and nostalgic comedy about family vacations will delight anyone who’s ever sat in a car for more than an hour.
AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions for Leaving Iowa will take place on Saturday, Feb 9, 2013, from 1-4 PM by appointment at HFAC located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070. Actors can make an appointment by emailing auditions@houstonfac.com for an audition time slot. Please be sure to include your desired role and phone number in your request.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through February. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Volunteer Opportunities Cypress Assistance Ministries Volunteers Needed
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org. For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
