Message from your HOA President Warm February Greetings, As we are now in the heart of winter, I hope that everyone has been keeping warm or cool depending on the day here in Houston. It is part of the joy of living in the South. I know that there are people in other parts of the world who are envious. Being February, love must be in the air. I am reminded of passing out Valentines in elementary school. Everyone got cards from everyone else, but you took a little extra time selecting which one in your box to give to that special one person in class. The names and faces have all faded into oblivion, but the joy of Valentine’s Day remains. Here is wishing each of you a Happy Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart. (Guys, remember to buy something nice. Hint, hint.) As seen in the photos later in the magazine, the new roof is up over the new patio we installed last year. We have also installed fans and some tables on the patio, which really makes for a nice area to sit. It will be really nice during the hot summer months. The restrooms at the Recreation Center have been remodeled. It was a long process to get everyone involved to agree on everything that went into the remodeling process. I guess that is what you get when five guys attempt to select color, tile, etc. I lost count of the number of meetings that took. Hopefully, you will appreciate the effort when nature calls. I would like to extend a personal thank you to all the residents who paid their HOA dues on time and I hope you appreciated the reduced rates this year. The HOA dues are how we fund all of the projects we have been doing and support the day-to-day operation of the community. If you have not paid your dues yet, please get them paid as soon as possible to avoid additional late fees that have already been added to your $440 dues. The longer you go without paying, the larger your bill will become. If you are having a problem paying your dues, please contact Mike Crahan or the Board to make necessary arrangements. Take care and God Bless, Dennis R. Brewer President, Cypress Mill HOA

Origin of Valentine’s Day
Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly known as Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14th each year. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, mostly in the West, although it remains a working day in all of them. St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment,

Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamn.
eritagetexas.com
The day’s association with romantic love grew in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. This is probably more information than you ever wanted to know…. but it might help with your next trivia game!!
Making a Difference
This month, we are featuring a group of folks we all take for granted and who like to keep a low profile. They are the owner and employees of Hightech Lawn. Owner and resident, Bradley Reid, has been taking care of Cypress Mill’s landscaping for several years and goes way beyond his contracted duties. Ever wonder who picks up beer bottles, soda cans, lost tee shirts, towels, broken tree limbs, cleans up hurricane damage, fixes basic electrical issues at the rec center and installs our Christmas decorations? Well, that’s Bradley and his crew. Thank you Hightech Lawn for keeping Cypress Mill beautiful. You truly have made a difference.

Cook’s Corner Valentine’s Marshmallow pops….Yum!! Ingredients Large marshmallows Striped Paper Straws White Chocolate Food Coloring (pink or red) Shredded coconut sprinkles Directions 1. First cut a small slit in the top of the marshmallows to allow you to insert your straw. If you skip this step you just might mash your marshmallows! 2. Insert the straws put them in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes. They do not take long to freeze and by doing this, the marshmallow is adhered more securely to the straw. 3. Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate in the microwave on medium heat and stir every 30 seconds. White chocolate seems to burn a lot easier than regular chocolate so watch it closely! Add your food coloring if desired. 4. Next up is the fun part: decorating! Dip the frozen marshmallows in the white chocolate. You will want to tap the excess white chocolate off. The frozen marshmallow will make the chocolate harden quickly so don’t wait too long before dipping them into the sprinkles. By Deanna

With new fundraising projects under way and service activities throughout the community, Key Club continues to transform the way students think, interpret and treat others. This year, our Key Club hopes its ideals of self-respect for oneself, others, the community and one’s faith directly impact each individuals daily outlook and perspective of life. After an exciting first semester, Key Clubbers are ready to showcase their true dedication to service, through leadership, responsibility and volunteerism. With the New Year approaching, members are showing personal initiative to finish their fall hours by volunteering in new events, attending meetings with friends, appreciating the service of their peers and reevaluating K-Family relations. Cy-Woods Key Clubbers will have the opportunity to participate in local elementary fun nights, gymnastic respites and raise funds for the ELIMINATE Project. Now that the fall semester is done, Key Clubbers are ready to begin another passionate semester of service. 2013 Relay For Life of Cy-Fair Cy Falls High School
Friday, April 26, 2013 - 7:00 pm Come join our planning committee or register your own team to help raise money for cancer in our Cy-Fair community!! The Heart of Relay: During the Relay for Life event, three ceremonies are held: Survivors Lap: To start Relay, those who have survived their battle with cancer join together to walk a lap celebrating their victories over the disease. Luminaria Ceremony: At dark, the track is lined with candle-lit bags bearing the names of those who have been touched by or have lost their lives to cancer. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! For more information, contact Erin Kasperek below: erin.kasperek@cancer.org Phone: 713-706-5652 | Mobile: 281-732-8324 www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx
