Neighborly reminder
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!
Home Improvement – ACC Application
The Architectural Control Committee would like to remind you that approval is needed before you begin an exterior project or change to your home. This includes exterior painting, new roofs, fences, pools, basketball goals, etc. With your completed ACC form, please note what is needed for your type of improvement such as, photos, paint samples, solar screen samples, drawings, brochure, lot survey and your signature. If these items are not submitted with your application, your request is denied and returned to you for completion. Please read the application carefully. • A lot survey is an architectural drawing of your property showing your home, easements and building lines. A copy usually comes with your closing papers. • Please show on the survey in a distinguishable color, other than black ink, the location of your project. • Faxed pictures come across as a solid black picture, so please mail or email pictures. Faxed pictures cannot be used. You will be notified by letter after the ACC committee has made a decision. They have at least 30 days to review and respond to your application. You will find an ACC form at www.crest-management.com or you may contact Sam Simmons at Crest Management at 281-579-0761, ext. 630 for more details.

THE STORY OF CUPID
Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows about the boy as a mischievous, winged child, armed with bow and arrows. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love and Cupid aims those arrows at humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman’s, he was Cupid and his mother was Venus. There is a very interesting story about Cupid and his mortal bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal, she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid, as soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished, too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. She wandered trying to find her love, until she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous than the last. For her last task, Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto and put it in the box. During her trip, she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche’s love for Cupid, made her a goddess. Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs. And two hearts pierced by an arrow, Cupid’s arrow, most frequently depict love.

Goodson Middle School GOODSON MIDDLE SCHOOL SEEKING COMMUNITY MENTORS
Goodson Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes a week to mentor/ meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. Mentors must attend a one-time district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Once you have completed the training and background check, an administrator at Goodson will work with you to match you with a student who would be the best fit for you. If you enjoy working with children and making a true difference in people’s lives, the mentor program at Goodson Middle School is just for you!! We are especially looking for quality male mentors to serve as role models to our male students. District mentor training dates are being held on the following dates this school year: Feb. 12th, Feb. 28th and March 28th. Please contact Emily Peden, Mentor Program Coordinator, at (281) 3732370 or by e-mail at emily.peden@cfisd.net or Melissa.laroussini@cfisd.net for more information. Thank you!

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB SUPPORTS GOVERNOR’S PROJECT AND CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
For Texas-Oklahoma District Governor Brian O’Hara’s Governor’s Project this year, Cypress Ranch Key Club has been excited to support The B.R.O. Project (Brothers Reaching Out) benefiting Children’s Miracle Network. Starting in October, the club has done several projects to benefit Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital. In response to a plea from a parent with strong connections to Texas Children’s Hospital, our club learned that DVD’s were stolen from the treatment rooms at the hospital. We had a rush collection drive for children’s DVD’s in good condition to take to the hospital. In a week’s time, our club collected nearly 200 DVD’s. At the club’s overnight Lock-in in October, there were movies, games and food, but most importantly, there were stations for different service projects. One of the stations was a blanketmaking station. That night, Key Club members made a total of eight homemade “no sew” fleece blankets to go to the sick children at the hospital. In early December, club officers held a Holiday Social at Willowbrook Mall. After eating together in the Food Court, the group went to Build-A-

Bear Workshop and made several stuffed animals to give to the children at Texas Children’s. The club also used club funds and donated gift cards to purchase toys to take to the hospital. A week or so before Christmas, Cy-Ranch club president Hannah Bielefeldt dropped off all of the toys, blankets and teddy bears to the Texas Children’s Hospital’s West Campus hospital in Katy, Texas. We are hopeful that these donations will brighten the day of some of the sick children spending time in the hospital over the holidays this year.

During the month of November and December, Cypress Ranch Key Club collected pajamas to benefit the Star of Hope, a local nonprofit helping Houston’s homeless men, women and children. The club participated in support of one of the club’s favorite restaurants, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt. Houston’s 11 Orange Leaf locations kicked off the pajama drive in midNovember to benefit the Star of Hope. Cypress Ranch Key Club was excited to collect new pajamas in support of the Orange Leaf drive. The Key Club held a Pajama Social at the Orange Leaf location in Cypress on November 13th. This Orange Leaf store is owned by Wanda Abel, mother of Cypress Ranch Key Club member McKenna Abel. On November 13th, club members who brought pajama donations to Orange Leaf received a free 3 ounce frozen yogurt. Close to 100 pairs of pajamas were donated that night. Many Key Club members who couldn’t attend the social at Orange Leaf wanted to help, so pajama donations were accepted at school through midDecember. Nearly another 100 pajamas were collected at school for the homeless men, women and children of the Houston area. All total, right at 200 pairs of new pajamas were donated. Of the eleven Houston-area Orange Leaf locations, the Cypress store collected the most pajamas! Because of their support of the collection drive, Cypress Ranch Key Club members were invited to participate in the December 18th pajama presentation at the Star of Hope Mission’s Ardmore location. Key Club officers were so excited to attend the presentation to celebrate the successful pajama drive, but also to meet Houston Texans strong safety Glover Quin. Glover Quin is a huge supporter of Houston area charities, including the Star of Hope Mission and was very involved in the Orange Leaf Pajama Drive.

BUSY HOLIDAY SEASON FOR CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB
During the holidays, the Key Club has focused on emphasizing the value of giving to others through everything from “adopting” families for Christmas, decorating a nursing home and taking part in various types of donation drives. In late November, twenty Key Club members traveled to Village on the Park nursing home and spent an afternoon helping them decorate for the holidays. Members decorated multiple trees, hung garland and wreathes and met with some of the residents. Village on the Park is a favorite destination of our club. We held our first ever “Senior Prom” at their facility last spring. A different way the Key Club was able to spread holiday cheer was through the selling of giant coloring books. The huge coloring books had themes ranging from dinosaurs, fairy tales and nursery rhymes, ABC’s and 123’s and Christmas. The coloring books were offered not only to the 658-member club but to all of the staff at the school as well. They were wildly popular and dozens were sold to be given as holiday gifts to the children in their lives.

The Key Club participated in a Toy Drive to benefit Cy Hope, so underprivileged children in our school district can have Christmas presents when they otherwise wouldn’t. Cy Hope paired up with the Ladies of Bridgeland to pull off the amazing drive. In lieu of the usual December Key Club meeting, the club held a social to not only end the calendar year with something fun for the members, but to collect hundreds of toys to donate to children in need that deserve to have presents on Christmas morning. One of the most rewarding projects that Cypress Ranch Key Club did this holiday season was helping to adopt four families for Christmas. These families all have a child receiving treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital for some type of cancer, many leukemia patients. The members of the Club first donated Walmart gift cards in preparation for our shopping trip. Once the club received the Christmas wish lists from the all of the children, their siblings and parents and club members took a shopping trip to Walmart to buy all of the presents for the families. Later, members helped gift wrap the presents along with the family who coordinated the project. It was so satisfying and heartwarming for Key Club members to help these families who have so many other things to worry about this Christmas season. The Key Club at Cypress Ranch not only does many sorts of events during the holiday, but the club’s members are ready to volunteer and make a difference throughout the year.

about black landscaping cloth to prevent weeds and how each layer of dirt and mulch should be laid down. Some of the stronger boys in the group were chosen for tree duty and dug huge holes for a tree for each yard. Members hauled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of topsoil, mulch and river rock. During the lunch break, Key Club members were able to sign the studs of a house that had just been framed. This is a favorite tradition that our club members love to do on every trip to Habitat. Members wrote little blessings and scripture on the home’s studs with permanent markers. These wishes to the future homeowner will soon be covered with sheetrock but will remain a part of the house forever.
Crossing neighborhood working alongside both current homeowners and those working on their sweat equity hours and planning to move into their homes soon. Habitat for Humanity has many volunteers working on these houses each Saturday, with many different things to do until each house in the neighborhood is completely finished. On our most recent workday, our club landscaped five yards for residents who have recently moved into their homes. We did everything from soil preparation to watering in the beautiful new landscaping. Most of our club members had never “dug in the dirt.” By the end of the day, everyone had become pros at making flowerbeds and planting flowers, as well as planting trees that will over time become almost 40 feet high! While working, some of the current and future homeowners came out to help with the landscaping on their yards.
At the end of the day, Key Club members were able to view the beautiful product of their efforts. Members learned so much about various plants, trees and flowers. Members had a chance to interact with the homeowners and make new friends. Even though everyone left a little dirty and very sore, all are looking forward to our next workday at Habitat for Humanity in northwest Harris County. The Key Club has held various fundraisers during our fall semester and recently presented Habitat for Humanity with a check for $1,000 to help with the Youth Build house now under construction. For more information about Cy-Ranch Key Club, go to www.ranchkey.com or contact Faculty Advisor Jennifer Hydes at Jennifer.hydes@cfisd.net (email).

Cy-Woods Key Club at their annual lock-in.
With the New Year approaching, members are showing personal initiative to finish their fall hours by volunteering in new events, attending meetings with friends, appreciating the service of their peers and reevaluating K-Family relations. Cy-Woods Key Clubbers will have the opportunity to participate in local elementary fun nights, gymnastic respites and raise funds for the ELIMINATE Project. Now that the fall semester is done, Key Clubbers are ready to begin another passionate semester of service. From raising funds for the Children’s Miracle Network and the ELIMINATE Project to working on projects such as TrickOr-Treat for UNICEF, Key Clubbers have found their place in the community, locally and internationally. Throughout the academic school year, Key Club hopes to involve more students, expand the outlook of its members, infuse family values and instill the human contribution. If you or anyone you know requires any help from Cy-Woods Key Club, please contact cywoodskeyclub@gmail.com, we are always happy to help our community!

Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. As interest in Relay for Life grew in the Houston area, the American Cancer Society began forming events in local communities and the first Cy-Fair Relay for Life committee was formed in 2004. This is our 9th year in Cy-Fair and our goal is to reach the $1 Million Dollar Mark. We are very close and only need $150,000 to meet our goal and with YOUR help, we can make this goal a reality!! 100% of our profits go to ACS to use for research and other programs. With more than 1,000 participants in last year’s Relay, we know that we can grow even bigger this year! HFAC Announces auditions
for Leaving Iowa
A comedy about the family vacations you’d like to forget! Houston Family Arts Center announces auditions for its Main Stage production of Leaving Iowa written by Tim Clue and Spike Manton. An annual trek to Civil War Battlefields would be excruciating enough for young Don without the wrong turns and awful roadside attractions. But as an adult, Don takes a more understanding view of both those vacations and his father. This folksy and nostalgic comedy about family vacations will delight anyone who’s ever sat in a car for more than an hour.
AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions for Leaving Iowa will take place on Saturday, Feb 9, 2013, from 1-4 PM by appointment at HFAC located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070. Actors can make an appointment by emailing auditions@houstonfac.com for an audition time slot. Please be sure to include your desired role and phone number in your request. Auditions are open to the community. No part has been pre-cast and we always welcome new faces! All parts may be cast with actors of any ethnicity. Actors will receive a $75 stipend after the closing performance and access to discounted tickets.
