March 2013 ATTENTION!

Please be careful and slow down while driving through the subdivision; remind your young drivers to do also. Please, be aware of your surroundings and parents, remind your children to watch for vehicles when crossing the street.

PARKED CARS

Please park your vehicles in your garage or at least in your driveway, if at all possible. Please be considerate of your neighbors and the fire trucks on your street. If you must park on the street, be considerate of the neighbor across the street, who must back from a driveway in order to enter the street. As our area has grown, so has the number of vehicles in the subdivision. Most seem to have more than one car per family and some have even more, as the children become driving age. Please try to be considerate of others who try to navigate between the cars that are left on the street. Children darting into the street or riding bicycles are more easily seen with less parked cars blocking the view of them. Thank you for your cooperation.

Crime Patrol

Would you please consider volunteering a couple hours a month with the Cimarron Crime Patrol. As always, we NEED YOUR SUPPORT. please call Austin Properties @ 713-776-1771.

March Gardening Tips

vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers. com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

West I-10 Fire DepARTMENT

Greetings from your friends at the West I-10 Fire Department. We would like to take this opportunity to share some tips with our community as the weather starts to warm up. Pool time is fun time but with lots of fun comes major responsibility. Adults must always accompany children while they are in the pool, turning your back or “just running in the house” for even a moment can have disastrous consequences. Also as the weather starts to warm up please make sure to hydrate yourselves and your family. Heat related incidents are very preventable, remember to take breaks, drink plenty of water and wear appropriate spring clothes.

Cimarron

Did you know that the West I-10 Fire Department is a department you can join? Members come from all walks of life and work together to serve their community. The West I-10 Fire Department is also committed to community involvement and as such would like all our citizens to know the best way to contact us. If you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1, but if you have a question about the department or would like to inquire about a public relations event, please dial 281-675-3639 or visit our website at www.westI-10fd.org.

Veterinary Public Health LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually

The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katy-based non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

KATY HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND MAKES HISTORY

The Katy High School Jazz Band was invited to perform at the 2013 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) in conjunction with the Texas Jazz Educators Association (TJEA) Convention this February. This marks the very first time of the convention that a High School Jazz Band has been selected as a feature performer. The Band performed in Ballroom B of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio on February 15th. The program included a variety of music from the classic dance tune Sing, Sing, Sing, made famous by the Benny Goodman Big Band, all the way to a chart written this year, specifically for the Katy Jazz Band, titled C’Mire by the up and coming Jazz artist and 2006 Katy High School graduate Tyler Mire. Directors of the Jazz Program are Terence Gorton, Dale Fremin and Andrew Lee.

KATY THEATRE ARTS BOOSTER CLUB BLANKET DELIVERY

On December 19th, The Katy High School Theatre Arts Booster Club delivered 62 hand-made fleece blankets to residents at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Facility and at the Heritage Park of Katy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Theatre students and Booster Club members made a total of 62 blankets to donate, 31 for each facility. They worked on the project during rehearsals of their upcoming musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The blankets were cut from soft, fleece fabric and the edges were hand tied into a decorative fringe. “The residents were genuinely thrilled to receive the blankets,” said Booster Club President Kathryn Gilliam. Gilliam accompanied students, Hope Deverney and Shelby Barnhardt, to deliver blankets to the Cinco Ranch facility. “One lady immediately wrapped hers around her shoulders like a shawl,” Gilliam shared, “another resident, Ms. Maria, said it was so soft she would sleep with it.” Katy High School Theatre Director, Rachel Smith said, “I think students providing service to others in their community shows our kids how blessed they are and how necessary it is for them to think of others.” “I’m very proud of the Booster Club and the Theatre Students for making the effort to make these blankets during rehearsals for the musical,” Gilliam added. For more information, contact Kathryn Gilliam, KTABC President, at kathrynkamishgilliam@yahoo.com (email).

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
