Living Word Lutheran presents “At the Ninth Hour”

Living Word Lutheran Church invites the Katy community to its presentation of “At the Ninth Hour” on Sunday, March 24th at 8:00 am, 9:30 am and 11:00 am. The cantata, by Allen Pote and Tom S. Long, is based on the Gospel of Mark and traces the last days of Jesus from his triumphal entry on Palm Sunday through his sacrifice on the cross to redeem us. The Living Word Choir and Bell Choir will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Following each service, there will an instrument “petting zoo” to allow children to explore the musical instruments used in the performance.

Sunday, March 24th - Palm Sunday A Lenten Cantata, “At the Ninth Hour” will be presented at the 8:00 am, 9:30 am and 11:00 am services. Thursday, March 28th - Maundy Thursday A Maundy Thursday worship service commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples will be held at 7 pm. Friday, March 29th - Good Friday “Journey to the Cross” begins at 10 am and is an interactive walk through the events of Holy Week for young children and their families. Good Friday Stations of the Cross Performed Live Coming to Fulshear!

Join New Creation Lutheran Church on Good Friday (March 29th), as we visit the stations of the cross. Experience the story of the cross in a whole new way as professional actors directed by Josh Pack, the worship leader at New Creation, takes you through Christ’s final moments, from his sentencing to his death and burial. Follow in Jesus’ footsteps along with the actors from station to station. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Foster High School FOSTER HIGH CONTINUES DOMINANCE IN ENERGY QUEST

For the third year in a row, the Foster High School Energy Quest team traveled to downtown Houston to flaunt their know-how when it comes to oil and natural gas. They competed against and outscored schools from all over Houston in a quiz-like competition centered on life in the oil industry. Foster remains the only school to ever win the competition. Put together three years ago by Foster Physics teacher Janie Head, this year’s 17 member team took on an extra work load to prepare for the quiz game and secure their winning streak.

The team’s veteran members, seniors Diem Tran and Elizabeth Nguyen, reflect on the combination of strategy and instincts that secured their success. “We compete as well as we do because we study like crazy,” Nguyen said. “The competition gets increasingly harder, but with all the work we put into it, we expected to win.” Tran felt the pressure when other Houston area schools started closing in on the lead Foster set early in the competition. “In the first round, we were the only school to get a perfect score,” Tran said. “We were cool and confident, but the other teams really stepped up their game.”

Third Time’s the Charm for Katy Youth Football’s JV Titans with a Turf Bowl Victory

The holidays came early for 22 Katy area boys, as the KYF JV Titans finished a near perfect season with a championship win in the Turf Bowl at Rhodes Stadium. This was the Titans’ third straight appearance in the Turf Bowl and the victory was sweet. Their coaches (led by Robert Cortez), fans and team sponsor Modern Machine Works cheered the mighty Titans on. Most of the 9 and 10 year old boys attend Alexander, Creech or Exley - all located in Katy ISD - and have played together for several years. Three of the players also received All Star recognition from the league this season.

Katy/West Houston Celebrates More Birthdays in Overnight Event - Join us on as we fight back against cancer!

Relay For Life, March 22nd at 7 pm, is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against cancer. Teams gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. The event begins with a cancer survivors lap celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Games, music and live entertainment encourage people all through the night. Some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. “The funds raised through our Relay For Life event enables us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back,” added Mike Dailey, Relay For Life of Katy/West Houston Event Chair. “Due to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the money raised by Relay For Life participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time.
