to be healthier, happier and more FIT! Plus - do you have a weight loss success story you wish to publish? Then email your incredible journey to a healthier you to Monica: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com
Grand Lakes News Attention Grand Lakes Residents - I’m determined more than ever to transform YOU into a healthier, happier and more FIT YOU now with a new campaign I’ve started called “Your Health NOW!” Here’s why: a dear friend’s parent had a stroke for the second time in less than one year. I’ve observed how incredibly unhealthy this family is: multiple fast food visits a day, heavy meat eaters (mostly red meat), eating deep fried, sugary, high sodium foods and snacks, consuming full fat dairy products, little or no exercise, skipping meals, little or no fresh fruits and vegetables and this heart attack on a platter is served all day long. Can you just imagine living this lifestyle each day? Of course you can because you are living like this. Our society is in denial about obesity. America leads the WORLD and ranks #1 for the highest obesity rate, which is close to 40%. This is embarrassing considering we have so many resources to help prevent obesity and the chronic, deadly illnesses that come with this epidemic. Therefore, I have decided to include a variety topics labeled with “Your Health NOW!” throughout our newsletter. In these sections, you will read about exercise and health tips and YOU have a chance to share YOUR weight loss success story. This is for YOU. Believe me, any and everything you eat at a restaurant, I GUARANTEE that you can make it at home healthier and tastier! Plus, these articles will inspire you to get off the couch and get moving! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com
NEW! Organizing Grand Lakes Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Ham Radio Volunteers. The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Have you been trained as a CERT member? Leslie Power and Shelia Maneffa are gathering information about CERT trained individuals in Grand Lakes. If you are CERT member and would like to be included in this Grand Lakes Team, please email Leslie: freetofly1234@gmail.com - TEEN CERT trained members are welcome, too. We would like to meet at least quarterly in order to stay informed and organized. visit citizencorps.gov/cert if you have not been trained, but would like more information. The West I-10 Fire Department holds periodic training classes. Visit their facebook page at www.facebook. com/pages/West-I-10-CERT - contact Scott Fenwick at scottfen@ swbell.net if interested in a class. The classes are held one night a week for 8 weeks at the Fire Department. We would also like to include any Ham Radio operators in our Emergency Response Team. If you would like to join us, please let us know. You could be instrumental in our communications should the need ever arise.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! – DANGERS OF FAST FOOD It’s convenient, cheap and even available within 5 minutes or less: FAST FOOD. What does this quick goodness really do to your body and health? Read on and that burger or bean burrito won’t look or taste so yummy anymore: • Fast Food Affects Energy Levels. Fast food doesn’t contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued with a lack of energy. Because fast food and junk food don’t contain adequate protein and good carbohydrates, blood sugar levels drop quickly after eating, leaving you grumpy, fatigued and craving sugar. • Fast Food Causes Obesity & Deathly Illnesses. Fast food has a surplus of fat and as fat accumulates in your body, you gain weight and become obese, putting you at risk for strokes, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even a heart attack. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food causes high blood pressure or hypertension. Excessive dietary sodium can also have a negative effect on renal function, even leading to kidney disease. • Fast Food Damages the Liver & Heart. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food raise blood cholesterol levels and contribute to arterial plaque build-up. The high levels of trans fatty acids in fast foods leads to fatty liver deposits, which cause liver dysfunction and disease.

Bake for 20 minutes on top rack. Transfer to cooling rack.
Fun outdoor easter activities!
Outdoor Easter games offer a family activity beyond the traditional Easter egg hunt. The games also lend themselves well indoors. This allows you to move the Easter activities indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Obstacle Course: An Easter-themed obstacle course gets everyone moving. Each player needs a spoon and a plastic Easter egg. The players balance the egg on the spoon while navigating an obstacle course set up in the back yard. Ideas for obstacles include sawhorses to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them.

Egg Rolling: Each player needs a different color egg for this game. Place one white egg in the middle of the lawn. Each player takes a turn rolling their egg. The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. Continue widening the gap to make the game more of a challenge. Courtesy of: livestrong.com

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - Wellness Tip!
There’s a big secret when it comes to weight loss: decrease sugar and salt. How do you decrease sugar and salt from your diet and what does this do? • Begin by reducing your caffeine in-take, be it coffee, tea or soda. By reducing these items by just one glass, you’re reducing your sugar in-take. • Decrease the number of teaspoons of sugar in your coffee and tea by one teaspoon. And if you MUST have it sweeter, replace with half a teaspoon honey. • Instead of eating an entire snack bag of chips, eat only half and you will reduce sodium big time.

GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND Do you have pets? Love animals? Or do you just want to be able to help your neighbors? Did you know we have a service in Grand Lakes that helps to reunite lost or found pets with their families? If you’re not already receiving pet “amber” alerts, please email Lisa at grandlakes4pets@aol.com and ask to be added to her list. If you ever find a lost pet or lose one of your own you’ll be glad to have this service at your fingertips. Please see more information on page (last page) and in the “Helpful Numbers for Grand Lakes” page in the back.
Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!
KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com
Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.

Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. 5 steps to a happier healthier pet
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please go to txlabrescue.org to check out their website.

The Katy community was overwhelmingly instrumental in supporting families that were displaced after Hurricane Katrina through the support of Katy ISD, local businesses, various community organizations and churches. We are, once again, given the opportunity to “unleash our hearts” and be a part of the rebuilding of Louisiana SPCA. The web-

Saving for College: Understanding 529 Plans Will you be able to afford to send your child to college? There are many tax-advantaged federal and state college savings plans available. The 529 plan comes in two varieties: the prepaid tuition plan and the savings plan. The Prepaid 529 Plan allows you to pay now at today’s rates for school tomorrow. Your account is guaranteed to pay for the tuition and fees at the state’s public universities and colleges by the time your child graduates from high school. Note: prepaid plans often do not cover the costs for room and board. Your child may use the prepaid account to attend a private or out-of-state school, but you risk forfeiting some of its value depending on how the plan values its contracts. Note: most prepaid plans require you or your child be a resident of the state in which the plan is offered. The 529 Savings Plan is more flexible than the prepaid tuition schemes. Money accumulated may be used at any school and for all qualified higher education expenses, including room and board. Each state determines the lifetime contribution limit or account balance cap will be in its 529 plan and limits range between $100K $270K. Investment minimums are low (as little as $25 a month with a minimum of $500 accumulated within two years of initial purchase date) and there is no restriction on yearly contributions unless the account is nearing the lifetime cap. Note: 529 contributions are treated as gifts subject to gift-tax limitations. If you want to make a tax-free contribution, it shouldn’t exceed $13K annually ($26K if contributing with your spouse). One exception: you may contribute as much as $65K tax free in one year ($130K with your spouse), but that contribution will be treated as being made in $13K installments over the next five years. That means you can’t make other tax-free gifts to the beneficiary during that time. 529 plans offer a menu of age-based portfolios and some offer a selection of stock and bond funds. In the former case, your annual contributions get invested in a pre-selected portfolio of stocks and bonds. Early on, the portfolio is tilted toward stocks and as the time for college nears, the weighting shifts toward bonds. You can switch investments up to twice a year. 529 plans vary by state, but you may open an account in any state you’d like. 529 plans offer generous tax breaks, if you use the money for qualified expenses. Your contribution is not deductible on federal taxes, but your investment grows tax-deferred and withdrawals will not be subject to federal tax. Always compare your 529 plan to other 529 savings plan offered by your home state or your beneficiary’s home state and consider state taxes or other benefits only available for investments in the home state’s plan. Read the Plan Disclosure Document BEFORE INVESTING. It has investment objectives, risks, fees, charges, expenses, etc. Investment Risks. Unlike prepaid tuition plans, college savings plans don’t lock in tuition prices. Nor does the state back or guarantee the investments. With most college savings plan investment options you may lose money or your investment may not grow enough to pay for college.

LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katybased non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

The purpose for this event is to increase exposure, education and entertainment of the jazz music medium. The event is designed to benefit participating student jazz groups, individual student musicians, jazz music educators and to provide top quality jazz performances to the community. The KJF is non-competitive in nature. It is designed to provide a performance opportunity for all jazz groups and for them to receive constructive comments / instruction from world-renowned professional musicians. For the jazz enthusiast, the opportunity to hear student jazz ensemble performances throughout the festival day, hear professional jazz artists teaching their crafts and skills and then complete the day with attending a professional jazz concert provides unparalleled insight into the development and preservation of this true American music art form.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.
We have been keeping Katy Bug Free for the last 30 years! • Bees/Wasps • Ants • Roaches • Ticks • Rodents & Rodent Exclusions • Mosquito Systems • Free Termite Inspection • Real Estate Reports
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The holidays came early for 22 Katy area boys, as the KYF JV Titans finished a near perfect season with a championship win in the Turf Bowl at Rhodes Stadium. This was the Titans’ third straight appearance in the Turf Bowl and the victory was sweet. Their coaches (led by Robert Cortez), fans and team sponsor Modern Machine Works cheered the mighty Titans on. Most of the 9 and 10 year old boys attend Alexander, Creech or Exley - all located in Katy ISD - and have played together for several years. Three of the players also received All Star recognition from the league this season.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by passing a State law.

Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona (although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time Zone. In 2005, President Bush signed into law a new energy policy bill that would extend Daylight Saving Time by 4 weeks beginning in 2007: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM on the second Sunday of March; Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 AM on the first Sunday of November. www.nasa.gov
