Grayson Lakes Kids Fishing Derby April 20, 2013
Grayson Lakes is hosting an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for kids, ages 2 to 15 years old and their families. Community youngsters are invited to come out to the Grayson Lakes Community Center with their fishing poles, tackle boxes and bait to take part in the Sixth Annual Grayson Lakes Kids Fishing Derby. This event is hosted by the Grayson Lakes Events Committee and generously sponsored by Entouch. It will be held at the Grayson Lakes Community Center from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 20, 2013. A parent or guardian must register and accompany all children. Contestants participating in the derby will receive a free goodie bag full of fun stuff provided by the event’s local sponsor. In addition to free fishing, the day will feature food and beverage, prizes and fun. Youngsters will begin registration at 9:30 AM and the fishing contest will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Refreshments will be served around 11:00 AM as we announce the Fishing Derby prizewinners. Families are welcome to stay and continue fishing for as long as they would like. Grayson Lakes has a strong commitment to the community’s youth and is proud to host a memorable day of fishing for our young residents. Events like this fishing derby can be a great bonding experience for kids and their families. The beauty of fishing is that it is an activity that a family can enjoy together for a lifetime, especially in a community like ours.

Fine-Tune Your Irrigation System Save Money & See Better Results Summer will be here before you know it, so now is the time to start thinking about ways to save water and money. The following suggestions are based on an article by the Irrigation Association, www.irrigation.org • Adapt your watering schedule to the weather and the season. Familiarize yourself with the settings on your irrigation controller and adjust the watering schedule regularly. More water is needed in the summer than in the spring or fall. • Install an inexpensive rain shutoff switch. Required by law in many states, these money-saving sensors prevent watering in rainy weather and can be retrofitted to almost any system. • Water at the right time of day. Watering when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cooler minimizes evaporation by as much as 30 percent. The best times to water are late afternoon, evening and just before sunrise. • Water more often for shorter periods. Setting your system to run for three, 5-minute intervals lets soil absorb more water than watering for 15 minutes at one time. Most irrigation controllers allow repeated start times and some controllers support cycle and soak mode. • Water only when needed. Saturate root zones and let the soil dry. Overwatering results in shallow roots and encourages weeds, disease and fungus growth. • Adjust sprinkler heads. Remove obstructions that prevent sprinklers from distributing water evenly and make sure you’re watering plants, not sidewalks or buildings. • Schedule watering for each zone separately. For each area, take into account type of sprinkler, sun or shade exposure, soil type and plant requirements. Rotor heads deliver .6” of water an hour while pop-ups deliver 1.6” an hour. • Inspect your system monthly. Check for leaks, broken or clogged heads and other problems or engage a certified irrigation professional to regularly check your system. Clean micro-irrigation filters as needed. • To maximize efficiency, have your system audited. Hire a professional to conduct an irrigation audit and uniformity test to make sure each zone is being watered evenly. • Think about low-volume drip irrigation for plant beds. Install micro-irrigation for gardens, trees and shrubs to minimize evaporation and runoff. Options include drip (also known as trickle),

micro-spray jets, micro-sprinklers and bubbler irrigation. Don’t mix head types on a single zone and be sure to adjust irrigation times when you change heads. • Consider “smart” technology. Climate or soil moisture sensorbased controllers evaluate weather or soil moisture conditions and then automatically adjust the watering schedule to meet the specific needs of your landscape. Help Prevent Community Vandalism The Grayson Lakes Community Association urges all residents to report vandalism to the management office at 281-347-7772. If you see anyone committing vandalism or witness suspicious activity or individuals please contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office at 281-341-4665. Whether the vandalism is being committed against a home or the community, surrounding neighbors should be made aware of any vandalism when it occurs. Creating awareness will keep the community alert for suspicious persons and activities. Exchange your contact information with neighbors so you can be notified in the event any vandalism is witnessed. If you have a Block Captain, be sure that person has your contact information. If you do not have a Block Captain, consider volunteering to be one. We also need a Safety and Security Committee Chair to head up the Neighborhood Watch Program and promote security awareness. Notify your local police department and file a police report for any vandalism that occurs. Filing a police report will help document each vandalism incident and the damage that was caused. It will also help Deputy Singh understand patterns and focus his efforts.

Exterior Modifications: Most modifications and additions to your property need to be approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). Space permitting, a copy of the request form and guidelines can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Otherwise, they can be found on the Grayson Lakes website, www.graysonlakesliving.com, under Community: Resident Forms and Documents. See Article 4.3 of the Declaration for more details. General Property Maintenance: The overall appearance and repair of your property, including mowing, cement and siding, are your responsibility and should be actively maintained. The community does not employ services for non-common areas, such as those provided by condominiums. Landscaping: You are responsible for maintaining the existing landscaping and any improvements made to your property. Your property should retain its relative curb appeal and stay weed and overgrowth free. Additionally, each property requires a predetermined minimum tree count and the trees should remain trimmed at least 6’ off the ground. See Article V in the CC&R’s and the Landscaping Guidelines, on our web site at www.graysonlakesliving. com: community: Resident Forms and Documents, for more details. Fences: All fences are to be kept in good repair. Painting or staining of wood fences is prohibited. Drainage: Any modifications that affect the drainage of rainwater on your property must be approved by any other affected property owners. This specifically includes landscaping. Exterior Lighting: Additions or changes to exterior lighting should not negatively affect any other residents. Direct light, reflection or cast off may inadvertently cause unwelcomed lighting to other residents view and their property. Portable Basketball Goals: Portable basketball goals must be well maintained and stored either reasonably out of view from the street when not in use or positioned in a manner that gives the impression that it is a permanent freestanding basketball goal. Portable basketball goals, like permanent freestanding basketball goals, must be submitted for review by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). Written approval from the ARC must be obtained and on file with the Association. See section 4.2 Basketball Goals in Exhibit “E” of the Architectural and Aesthetic Guidelines for more information. Rain Barrels: Rainwater Recovery Systems must be installed on your own property and should not encroach onto any other resident’s property or common area. Prior approval is required by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC).

Outdoor Easter games offer a family activity beyond the traditional Easter egg hunt. The games also lend themselves well indoors. This allows you to move the Easter activities indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Obstacle Course: An Easter-themed obstacle course gets everyone moving. Each player needs a spoon and a plastic Easter egg. The players balance the egg on the spoon while navigating an obstacle course set up in the back yard. Ideas for obstacles include sawhorses to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them. Egg Rolling: Each player needs a different color egg for this game. Place one white egg in the middle of the lawn. Each player takes a turn rolling their egg. The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by passing a State law. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona (although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time Zone. In 2005, President Bush signed into law a new energy policy bill that would extend Daylight Saving Time by 4 weeks beginning in 2007: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM on the second Sunday of March; Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 AM on the first Sunday of November. www.nasa.gov

St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church is holding their annual Bazaar on Saturday, May 4th from 6 PM to 10 PM and Sunday, May 5th from 10 AM to 5 PM on the church grounds, 5356 Eleventh Street in Old Katy. Join us on as we fight back against cancer! Relay For Life, March 22nd at 7 pm, is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against cancer. Teams gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. The event begins with a cancer survivors lap celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Games, music and live entertainment encourage people all through the night. Some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. “The funds raised through our Relay For Life event enables us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back,” added Mike Dailey, Relay For Life of Katy/West Houston Event Chair. “Due to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the money raised by Relay For Life participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.” Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available at www.relayforlife.org/katytx. KATY THEATRE ARTS BOOSTER CLUB BLANKET DELIVERY On December 19th, The Katy High School Theatre Arts Booster Club delivered 62 hand-made fleece blankets to residents at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Facility and at the Heritage Park of Katy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Theatre students and Booster Club members made a total of 62 blankets to donate, 31 for each facility. They worked on the project during rehearsals of their upcoming musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The blankets were cut from soft, fleece fabric and the edges were hand tied into a decorative fringe. “The residents were genuinely thrilled to receive the blankets,” said Booster Club President Kathryn Gilliam. Gilliam accompanied students, Hope Deverney and Shelby Barnhardt, to deliver blankets to the Cinco Ranch facility. “One lady immediately wrapped hers around her shoulders like a shawl,” Gilliam shared, “another resident, Ms. Maria, said it was so soft she would sleep with it.”

BOARD APPROVES HIGH SCHOOL NO. 7 NAME OBRA D. TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the naming of its newest campus, High School No. 7, after retired educator Obra D. Tompkins. Tompkins served more than 39 years in the field of education, serving the bulk of his years as principal for Mayde Creek High School. He has been called a ‘trailblazer’ among his colleagues and has served in a number of capacities in education during his career. Tompkins retired in 2012 from his most recent position as Katy ISD’s executive director for campus administrative support.

TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANNOUNCED During their regular January Board meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved Anthony “Tony” Tademy as the new head football coach and athletic coordinator for Obra D. Tompkins High School, slated to open in August 2013. Tademy comes to Katy ISD after serving as an assistant football coach for Duncanville High School in 2012 and serving as an assistant football coach for seven years at Texas Christian University. With more than 27 years of high school and collegiate coaching experience, Tademy’s record includes one high school state championship, a 2010 Rose Bowl win and six additional college Bowl wins. Tademy started his football career in 1985 as the assistant football coach at the Virginia Military Institute. He has held multiple assistant coach and defensive coordinator positions at top universities including Louisiana Tech University, University of Houston and Texas Christian University. Tademy holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University. “Coach Tademy is bringing more than just extensive experience to Obra D. Tompkins High School,” says Principal Mark Grisdale. “He has coached and developed an impressive roster of players and has a reputation for integrity and leadership. I believe our student athletes will succeed with him as both a coach and a mentor.”
OFFICER GONZALES JOINS KATY ISD POLICE FORCE During the January Katy ISD Board Work Study meeting, Officer Ryan P. Gonzales was sworn-in to serve on the 37-member Katy ISD Police Force. Officer Gonzales has 10 years of experience in law enforcement, having served as a Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable and Fort Bend County Deputy Sheriff. Gonzales’ roots are in public education as his father, Richard Gonzales, is an associate principal in Fort Bend ISD and his mother, Marilyn Gonzales, is a Katy ISD educator. Gonzales resides within Katy ISD with his wife of thirteen years, Amiko and two children, Brendon and Kylee. Katy ISD peace officers are licensed and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. The Katy ISD police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the district (181 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the district that is owned, leased or rented by the district or otherwise under the district’s control. Peace officers employed by Katy ISD have the same authority, powers, privileges and immunities as bestowed on all Texas peace officers while on or off duty. LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katybased non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

Third Time’s the Charm for Katy Youth Football’s JV Titans with a Turf Bowl Victory The holidays came early for 22 Katy area boys, as the KYF JV Titans finished a near perfect season with a championship win in the Turf Bowl at Rhodes Stadium. This was the Titans’ third straight appearance in the Turf Bowl and the victory was sweet. Their coaches (led by Robert Cortez), fans and team sponsor Modern Machine Works cheered the mighty Titans on. The Katy Jazz Festival (KJF) The Katy Jazz Festival (KJF) will be held at Katy High School, located at 6331 Highway Blvd., Katy, Texas and will feature an incredible array of jazz performances, master classes and a visual arts exhibit and sales. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was

established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. Katy Elks Score Again With Local Youth & Hoop Shoot This year’s annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest provided 150 plus local young people in the age group 9 – 13 the opportunity to take their next step toward Elks National recognition and free throw success. The journey began at Katy ISD elementary and junior schools under the direction of H.C. Grimet, Katy ISD Physical Education, Health and OLC curriculum Coordinator. Katy ISD is in its 32nd year of working with the Katy Elks in providing scholarship opportunities for area youth through the National Hoop Shoot program. Students winning at local schools were eligible to compete for the right to advance to District competition February 10th at Morton Ranch High School. From there winners advanced to State to Regional and finally to National Finals at Springfield, Mass. Winning first place honors and advancing to district are: Sean Leonida, Fielder Elem, age 8-9 male; Sophie Strong, Griffin Elem, age 8-9 female; Kaleb Crandall, Fielder Elem, age 10-11 male; Danyle Courtley, Rylander Elem, age 10-11 female; Austin Arnold, Memorial Parkway JH, age 12-13 male and Macy Ray, McMeans JH, age 12-13 female. Hoop Shoot, under the chairmanship of Daniel Tass, is only one of several programs the Katy Elks Lodge sponsors to provide opportunities to Katy area youth. vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

James Whitley, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1146, Katy, TX, has successfully earned his Eagle Scout Rank. To become an Eagle Scout, James worked his way from Tiger Cub at age 6 through the Cub Scout ranks earning the Arrow of Light, the highest Cub Scout award, in 5th grade. As a Boy Scout, he earned 24 merit badges and held several key leadership positions in Troop 1146 including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Quartermaster. James has also achieved Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. Boy Scout Troop 1146 member James Whitley earns Eagle Rank
For his Eagle Project, James planted trees in Bear Creek Park with the Harris County Parks Department and help from Troop 1146 scouts, parents and friends. This project reforested a portion of Bear Creek Park, which had lost trees damaged by Pine Bark Beetles. James is currently a junior at the James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas. He is a National Honor Society member and plays viola in the Taylor Philharmonic Orchestra. James would like to thank friends, scouts, leaders, parents, teachers and community members who helped him along the way to Eagle Scout rank.

Directions Slice eggs in half lengthwise; remove yolks and set whites aside. In a small bowl, mash yolks. Add the next 10 ingredients; mix well. Stuff or pipe into egg whites. Garnish with parsley and paprika. Refrigerate until serving. Yield: 2 dozen.
Stuffed Baby Red Potatoes from Taste of Home© 2012 Ingredients 24 small red potatoes (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1/4 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided 1/2 cup crumbled cooked bacon, divided 2/3 cup Daisy Brand Sour Cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon paprika
Ingredients 1/2 fully cooked bone-in ham (6 to 7 pounds) 2 cups apple cider 1 cup honey 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon butter 2 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice Directions Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep. Cover and bake at 325° for 2 hours. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, combine the cider, honey, vinegar and mustard; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the butter, chili powder and apple pie spice. Set aside 1 cup for serving. Cook the remaining sauce until thickened; spoon over ham. Bake, uncovered, 30-35 minutes longer or until a thermometer reads 140°. Warm reserved sauce; serve with ham Yield: 10 servings (1 cup sauce).
Directions Scrub potatoes; place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain.When cool enough to handle, cut a thin slice off the top of each potato. Scoop out pulp, leaving a thin shell. (Cut thin slices from potato bottoms to level if necessary.) In a large bowl, mash the potato tops and pulp with butter. Set aside 2 tablespoons each of cheese and bacon for garnish; add remaining cheese and bacon to potatoes. Stir in the sour cream, egg, salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into potato shells. Top with remaining cheese and bacon; sprinkle with paprika. Place in an ungreased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 375° for 12-18 minutes or until heated through. Yield: 2 dozen.
