Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Yard
Our lawns and gardens are going to need some very special T.L.C. after this past year in which we experienced a summer long drought and a very wet cold winter. A little work now will not only make your yard look beautiful for months to come but will also make you neighbors “green” with envy. Here are a few tips to get started: Rake - As soon as your lawn begins to show live, give it a light once-over with a rake. In addition to clearing leaves, twigs and other debris left over from last fall, this also allows you to assess your lawn for damage caused by the harsh winter. Look for early signs of pests or disease and nip them in the bud before they cause big problems. Weed - Go after weeds early in the season before they have a chance to go to seed and spread throughout your garden. Cultivating a healthy lawn is one of the simplest ways to crowd out weeds by applying a good weed and feed product. Fix bare spots - Bare patches can make a yard look shabby. A quick and easy way of improving the look of your yard is to repair discolored patches or grass, especially in early spring, when the cooler temperatures help the grass grow. Just clear away the dead-looking patches, sprinkle grass seed or lay down new sod on the newly exposed soil, add fertilizer and keep the area moist until it sprouts.
25 Years Experience • References Available
Trim - Cut back overgrown bushes and shrubs. Fall and winter have provided the perfect growing opportunity for bushes and shrubs in your yard, which is one of the main reasons why they should be trim back.
CommerCial/residential - Free estimates-
Plant flowers - They will provide color and beauty to your yard, which can really make it look nice.

NEIGHBORHOOD ADULT CO-ED VOLLEYBALL FORMING
BashansPainting@earthlink.net * FULLY INSURED *
281-347-6702 office
Residents of Green Trails Phase II are forming an adult co-ed volleyball league this Spring. Competition will be played on late Sunday afternoons over a six-week period at a Green Trails Phase II park. Games will begin April 14th and end May 26th (excluding Mother’s Day on May 12th). Teams must have an equal number of women and men over 25 years of age. It is recommended that each team have a minimum of 8 players and no more than 12. At least two-thirds of each team must consist of Green Trails Phase II residents.
281-731-3383 cell
We accept all major credit cards
The purpose of the league is to provide an opportunity for husbands and wives to play a sport together and to build camaraderie with their neighbors/ teammates. All normal volleyball rules apply except that no two men can hit the ball consecutively on the same side of the court. This will reduce domination by two men and ensure the participation of the female teammates. To register for a team, email Peter Olyniec at polyniec@sbcglobal.net or if you have any questions, call Peter at 281-578-2052. NOTE: Registration closes on March 20th or when the number of teams reaches six, whichever comes first.

RELEASE AND INDEMNIFICATION
If you see something suspicious, call the constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them. Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. See our website for other tips.

Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance for lessons or leagues, must contact the tennis committee through Elaine Kearney at 281-492-6848. To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign-up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved or in demand.) New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card. The wheelchair access gate has been tampered with and will be locked to prevent use by non-residents. Residents needing wheelchair access to the tennis courts, please contact the tennis committee and we will be happy to provide you with a key. The lights at the Gerri Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 pm. PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition.

Home Improvement Reminder
Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your home or yard [including your fence] require ARC approval first. In need of an ARC form? Go to www. greentrailstwo.com our neighborhood website.
Curbside Recycling Info
Curbside recycling now includes all glass, papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed within the provided recycling bin. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials. If items exceed container capacity,
Green Trails II
please place them adjacent to bin, well marked as recycling materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they are not recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the containers when recycling. See www.greentrailstwo.com for additional trash and recycling guidelines and how to obtain additional bins if needed.
WEBSITE
The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast email” function. This feature allows the Association to send news to residents on a mass basis. The Board of Directors intends to start utilizing this function more frequently to disseminate important information, particularly in emergencies like Hurricane Ike. If you have not registered and would like to do so, please go to the “Join Our Mailing List” section of the Website. The only information that you need to enter is your email address. Each of the other items is optional, including your name. None of the information will be distributed to third parties.
Expedited ARC Approvals
Remember to apply and get ARC approval before doing work that affects the exterior appearance of your house or yard. This includes replacing fences, repainting (even the same color) and re-roofing. Approval can take up to one month, so plan ahead. In many cases, you can now expedite the process by paying a $50 fee. For details, see the website, www.greentrailstwo.com or call Crest Management at 281-579-0761.
Suspicious Activity?
Call the Constable and report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for law enforcement in our neighborhood is to call the constable direct at 281-463-6666. An alert Green Trails resident recently foiled a car theft by calling the constable when something didn’t seem right. The suspects were arrested. Remember, “No call is too small.”

How Do We Look?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

National Award given to Community Bands Annually
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. Green Trails II
The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

Pictured from left to right is Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey, Obra D. Tompkins and Tompkins High School Principal Mark Grisdale.
Tompkins served more than 39 years in the field of education, serving the bulk of his years as principal for Mayde Creek High School. He has been called a ‘trailblazer’ among his colleagues and has served in a number of capacities in education during his career. Tompkins retired in 2012 from his most recent position as Katy ISD’s executive director for campus administrative support. Katy ISD’s living namesakes have more than just years of education experience. They are community-minded individuals who mentor, participate in community projects and volunteer their time and resources to continue to make the Katy ISD community the leader in educational excellence.
TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANNOUNCED
During their regular January Board meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved Anthony “Tony” Tademy as the new head football coach and athletic coordinator for Obra D. Tademy comes to Katy ISD after serving as an assistant football coach for Duncanville High School in 2012 and serving as an assistant football coach for seven years at Texas Christian University. With more than 27 years of high school and collegiate coaching experience, Tademy’s record includes one high school state championship, a 2010 Rose Bowl win and six additional college Bowl wins. Tademy started his football career in 1985 as the assistant football coach at the Virginia Military Institute. He has held multiple assistant coach and defensive coordinator positions at top universities including Louisiana Tech University, University of Houston and Texas Christian University. Tademy holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University. “Coach Tademy is bringing more than just extensive experience to Obra D. Tompkins High School,” says Principal Mark Grisdale. “He has coached and developed an impressive roster of players and has a reputation for integrity and leadership. PATTISON ELEMENTARY HOSTS ITS FIRST SPECIAL OLYMPICS
This was our very first Special Olympics here at Pattison Elementary. It was designed for children ages 3 - 7. Thanks to Katy ISD’s adaptive PE teacher, Abbie Wylie, the PPCD program learned about it last summer. The Special Olympics donated equipment to our classroom for free so that the children could prepare for the day. A wonderful representative, Cody Meredith, helped organize the event. Special Olympics provided free tee-shirts and snacks to the children for the day of the event. The PPCD team, Pattison PTA and PPCD Parents set up and ran the stations. Cody and Abbie also came out to announce the children and acted as the Masters of Ceremony. The children were announced one at a time as they

Relay For Life, March 22nd at 7 pm, is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against cancer. Teams gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. The event begins with a cancer survivors lap celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Games, music and live entertainment encourage people all through the night. Some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. “The funds raised through our Relay For Life event enables us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back,” added Mike Dailey, Relay For Life of Katy/West Houston Event Chair. “Due to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the money raised by Relay For Life participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.” Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available at www.relayforlife.org/katytx. www.WeBuyGoldCenter.com In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics.

Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
