(GT ESTATES) DEBRIS IN SEWER DRAINS

Please refrain from depositing any debris (lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste, motor oil, etc.) into the streets or storm drains. Disposing of debris in the street or other portions of the storm water drainage system can create problems. Flooding takes place when the system becomes blocked with debris. This can create a flooding potential that could result in property damage. The water quality is impacted if you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden. In addition, pet waste left on yards can contribute to contaminated run off. Grass clippings and leaves left in the storm water system contribute to system wear and can destroy the underground system. Please make sure you dispose of your lawn clippings, leaves and other debris in a proper manner.

Neighborhood security is provided by the Harris County Constables Precinct 5 Office, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We also have an additional contract with them (Contract 50 - in conjunction with the other sections of Green Trails and Windsor Park Lakes). To contact the Constable’s Office:  • Emergency - 911  • Harris Country Constable Dispatch: 281-463-6666. PLEASE CALL THEM IF YOU SEE ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS OR NEED SECURITY INFORMATION. The Constable’s office encourages residents to call if they see any suspicious or bothersome activity. Please keep your vehicles locked at all times to reduce crime of opportunity.

(GT ESTATES) Vacation Watch

Residents of Constable Precinct 3 contract subdivisions, which include Estates of Green Trails, can have their homes checked by a drive-by patrol officer while they are away on vacation. Please contact the Constable’s office at 281-427-4791 or 713-453-6959 or complete a Vacation Watch Form, which can be found in the Forms section - You will need to complete the form and submit it to the Constable’s office one week before you leave! If your home is monitored by a private security alarm system, please be sure to tell them you are in Green Trails Contract 50 with the Harris County Constable in Precinct 5. You must also have an Alarm Permit with the Harris County Sheriff’s office. There is a $35 new permit fee or a $10 renewal fee for the permit. Estates of Green Trails has bi-weekly trash pick-up on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) (Phone 281-368-8397). Should you be overlooked by WCA on a pickup day, please call WCA directly and register any complaints with Sterling ASI (Phone 281-491-0266). They will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Your neighbors appreciate it! Heavy household items such as hot water heaters, washers, etc. are considered “heavy trash” and are picked up on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All other trash will be picked up “at the back door” (outside the gate beside the garage, etc.) by WCA. Please be sure trash is visible and/or accessible to them, and please keep all pets safely away from that area of your yard. We pay for “back door” pickup, so that is where the men look for your trash.

(GT ESTATES) Recycling

Recycling plays an important role in how we help to protect the environment. The recycling day for the neighborhood is on Wednesday. Have your recycling bin at the curb no later 7:00 AM. You can recycle the following items; newsprint, magazines, phone books, corrugated boxes (broken down), non-corrugated cardboard (i.e. cereal boxes, soda boxes, etc.), HDPE Plastics 1 & 2 (look for the little triangle symbol usually on the bottom of the container with the number inside of it), aluminum and tin cans, paper, plastics 1 through 7, all glass and all metals. Items excluded include plastic bags, Styrofoam, pizza boxes and food soiled items.

(GT ESTATES) Recreation Center

Estates of Green Trails own the Recreation Center at Shillington Drive and Fry Road. It consists of an Olympic-size swimming pool, totally refinished in the summer of 2000 and two tennis courts, recently refinished. Use of

these facilities is allowed to all Estates of Green Trails residents in good standing who have paid their annual maintenance fee. Green Trails Section III residents in good standing with their homeowners association can also use these facilities. Only residents who have been issued Pool/Tennis Court Access Cards from Sterling ASI are admitted into the pool and allowed to use the tennis courts.

(GT ESTATES) Tennis Courts

Any Estates of Green Trails or Green Trails Section III resident with a Pool/ Tennis Court Access Card can use the tennis courts. Tennis Court Hours:  All day until 10:30 PM. Rollerblades, skateboards or any other wheeled vehicles are not allowed on the courts any time.

(GT ESTATES) Hike & Bike Trail

The 10.75 mile, asphalt trail is available from dawn to dusk for walkers and bicyclists, foot-and non-motorized-wheel-traffic. The trail runs from Highland Knolls at Fry Road through George Bush Park to Highway 6 then connects to Terry Hershey Park. (When all of this is completed, you will be able to walk/ bike to Terry Hershey Park (east of Hwy. 6) along this trail. Also look for the new trail connecting the trail behind the subdivision along the drainage canal to the new trail along Baker Road. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass. htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

Chocolate Covered Easter Eggs INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 2 1/2 pounds confectioners’ sugar 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 cups semisweet chocolate pieces 2 tablespoons shortening or vegetable oil (optional) DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, mix together the butter, vanilla, and cream cheese. Stir in confectioners’ sugar to make a workable dough. For best results, use your hands for mixing. Divide the dough into four parts. Leave one of the parts plain. To the second part, mix in peanut butter. Mix coconut into the third part, and cocoa powder into the last part. Roll each type of dough into egg shapes, and place on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Refrigerate until hard, at least an hour. Melt chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until smooth. If the chocolate seems too thick for coating, stir in some of the shortening or oil until it thins. Dip the chilled candy eggs in chocolate, and return to the waxed paper lined sheet to set. LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD

National Award given to Community Bands Annually

The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katy-based non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th.

The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. During the January Katy ISD Board Work Study meeting, Officer Ryan P. Gonzales was sworn-in to serve on the 37-member Katy ISD Police Force. Officer Gonzales has 10 years of experience in law enforcement, having served as a Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable and Fort Bend County Deputy Sheriff. Gonzales’ roots are in public education as his father, Richard Gonzales, is an associate principal in Fort Bend ISD and his mother, Marilyn Gonzales, is a Katy ISD educator. Gonzales resides within Katy ISD with his wife of thirteen years, Amiko and two children, Brendon and Kylee. Katy ISD peace officers are licensed and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. The Katy ISD police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the district (181 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the district that is owned, leased or rented by the district or otherwise under the district’s control. Tompkins served more than 39 years in the field of education, serving the bulk of his years as principal for Mayde Creek High School. He has been called a ‘trailblazer’ among his colleagues and has served in a number of capacities in education during his career. Tompkins retired in 2012 from his most recent position as Katy ISD’s executive director for campus administrative support. TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANNOUNCED

During their regular January Board meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved Anthony “Tony” Tademy as the new head football coach and athletic coordinator for Obra D. Tompkins High School, slated to open in August 2013. Tademy comes to Katy ISD after serving as an assistant football coach for Duncanville High School in 2012 and serving as an assistant football coach for seven years at Texas Christian University. With more than 27 years of high school and collegiate coaching experience, Tademy’s record includes one high school state championship, a 2010 Rose Bowl win and six additional college Bowl wins. Tademy started his football career in 1985 as the assistant football coach at the Virginia Military Institute. He has held multiple assistant coach and defensive coordinator positions at top universities including Louisiana Tech University, University of Houston and Texas Christian University. Tademy holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University. “Coach Tademy is bringing more than just extensive experience to Obra D. Tompkins High School,” says Principal Mark Grisdale. “He has coached and developed an impressive roster of players and has a reputation for integrity and leadership. I believe our student athletes will succeed with him as both a coach and a mentor.”

PATTISON ELEMENTARY HOSTS ITS FIRST SPECIAL OLYMPICS

This was our very first Special Olympics here at Pattison Elementary. It was designed for children ages 3 - 7. Thanks to Katy ISD’s adaptive PE teacher, Abbie Wylie, the PPCD program learned about it last summer. The Special Olympics donated equipment to our classroom for free so that the children could prepare for the day. A wonderful representative, Cody Meredith, helped organize the event. Special Olympics provided free tee-shirts and snacks to the children for the day of the event. The PPCD team, Pattison PTA and PPCD Parents set up and ran the stations. Cody and Abbie also came out to announce the children and acted as the Masters of Ceremony. The children were announced one at a time as they

got to run onto the stage. The crowd cheered for each young athlete as their little faces lit up! The children did everything from jumping on a trampoline, to rolling down a wedge, to kicking a ball, to riding a scooter, to running through the red tape line at the end of the race! There was so much pride and pure joy in that gym that day, from the teachers, the parents, the volunteers and especially from the children. Our day ended with the Special Olympics rep giving them all a winners ribbon and a sticker. Pattison Elementary wants to thank Special Olympics for making the kids feel like the winners they are!

Boy Scout Troop 1146 member James Whitley earns Eagle Rank

James Whitley, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1146, Katy, TX, has successfully earned his Eagle Scout Rank. To become an Eagle Scout, James worked his way from Tiger Cub at age 6 through the Cub Scout ranks earning the Arrow of Light, the highest Cub Scout award, in 5th grade. As a Boy Scout, he earned 24 merit badges and held several key leadership positions in Troop 1146 including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Quartermaster. James has also achieved Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. James participated in two High Adventure camps including Sea Base in Florida and a 75-mile hike at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He also completed the “Mile Swim” twice during summer camps.

For his Eagle Project, James planted trees in Bear Creek Park with the Harris County Parks Department and help from Troop 1146 scouts, parents and friends. This project reforested a portion of Bear Creek Park, which had lost trees damaged by Pine Bark Beetles. James is currently a junior at the James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas. He is a National Honor Society member and plays viola in the Taylor Philharmonic Orchestra. James would like to thank friends, scouts, leaders, parents, teachers and community members who helped him along the way to Eagle Scout rank.

Third Time’s the Charm for Katy Youth Football’s JV Titans with a Turf Bowl Victory

The holidays came early for 22 Katy area boys, as the KYF JV Titans finished a near perfect season with a championship win in the Turf Bowl at Rhodes Stadium. This was the Titans’ third straight appearance in the Turf Bowl and the victory was sweet. Their coaches (led by Robert Cortez), fans and team sponsor Modern Machine Works cheered the mighty Titans on. Most of the 9 and 10 year old boys attend Alexander, Creech or Exley - all located in Katy ISD - and have played together for several years. Three of the players also received All Star recognition from the league this season.

Relay For Life, March 22nd at 7 pm, is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against cancer. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
