Oil Stain Clean Up 1. Clean up any fresh oil stains by blotting the surface with newspaper. 2. Sprinkle a layer of clay-based cat box litter over the top of the oil stain. You want to completely cover the stain so that you can no longer see it through the litter. The litter will soak up the oil from the concrete. 3. Monitor the color of the litter several times while it is sitting on the stain. As the oil becomes absorbed into the litter, it will change to a darker color. When the litter changes colors, remove the old litter by sweeping it up with a broom. Dispose of the discolored litter as you did the oil-soaked newspapers. Sprinkle more litter onto the stain the same way you did in the prior step and continue to let it soak up the oil. Leave the stain covered with litter for a minimum of one day. Clean away all the litter after 24 hours. Sweep up the litter and dispose of it. 4. Apply a liquid dish detergent with grease-cutting agents to the oil stain. Use a scrub brush to rub the detergent into the stain. 5. Allow the detergent to settle for five minutes, then scrub the detergent into the stain again using short, circular movements. 6. Poor 1 cup of boiling water on to the dish detergent covered stain. Use your scrub brush to rub the water and soap into the stain. Take care not to burn yourself. 7. Blot up the now oily and soapy water with newspaper after the mixture has cooled for several minutes. Dispose of the newspaper. Continue to blot the area until you have absorbed all of the oily water. 8. Pour another 2 cups of boiling water over the stain. This will wash away any oily water that was not absorbed by the newspaper. Be careful not to burn yourself. If the stain is still present, repeat the process

Neighborhood/Crime Watch We can all participate in our Neighborhood/Crime Watch! It is easy! It’s about neighbors looking out for each other. When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged to contact the police and not to intervene. Call Fort Bend Sheriff at 281-341-4665. An alert and supportive neighborhood is the greatest single defense against crime. By getting to know your neighbors and their vehicles, you will most likely be aware of suspicious people, vehicles and/or sounds that could indicate criminal activity. Be a good neighbor. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. Ingredients 12 hard-cooked eggs 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons 2% milk Additional paprika

Directions Slice eggs in half lengthwise; remove yolks and set whites aside. In a small bowl, mash yolks. Add the next 10 ingredients; mix well. Stuff or pipe into egg whites. Garnish with parsley and paprika. Refrigerate until serving. Yield: 2 dozen.

Stuffed Baby Red Potatoes from Taste of Home© 2012 Ingredients 24 small red potatoes (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1/4 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided 1/2 cup crumbled cooked bacon, divided 2/3 cup Daisy Brand Sour Cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon paprika

Ingredients 1/2 fully cooked bone-in ham (6 to 7 pounds) 2 cups apple cider 1 cup honey 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon butter 2 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice Directions Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep. Cover and bake at 325° for 2 hours. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, combine the cider, honey, vinegar and mustard; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the butter, chili powder and apple pie spice. Set aside 1 cup for serving. Cook the remaining sauce until thickened; spoon over ham. Bake, uncovered, 30-35 minutes longer or until a thermometer reads 140°. Warm reserved sauce; serve with ham Yield: 10 servings (1 cup sauce).

Directions Scrub potatoes; place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain.When cool enough to handle, cut a thin slice off the top of each potato. Scoop out pulp, leaving a thin shell. (Cut thin slices from potato bottoms to level if necessary.) In a large bowl, mash the potato tops and pulp with butter. Set aside 2 tablespoons each of cheese and bacon for garnish; add remaining cheese and bacon to potatoes. Stir in the sour cream, egg, salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into potato shells. Top with remaining cheese and bacon; sprinkle with paprika. Place in an ungreased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 375° for 12-18 minutes or until heated through. Yield: 2 dozen.

Check out this Shamrock and Gold Coin cookie recipe! • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature • 2/3 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups all-purpose flour • Fine green sugar sprinkles • Yellow-goldcoarse sugar Preparation Preheat oven to 325°. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla and salt and beat with electric mixer on medium until blended. Add flour; mix on low until incorporated. Shape dough into a disk and wrap in wax paper. Chill for 2 hours. Soften dough at room temperature. Place oven racks in upper and lower thirds of oven. Halve dough. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shamrock shapes; save scraps. Repeat. Place cookies on two parchment-paper-lined baking sheets. Bake for 20 minutes (switch oven racks and turn pans halfway through cooking) until lightly golden. Remove; top with sprinkles. Transfer to cooling rack. Mold scraps into 1-inch balls; roll balls in sugar. Arrange 2 inches apart on baking sheet; flatten to 1/4 inch thick with bottom of a glass. Bake for 20 minutes on top rack. Transfer to cooling rack.

Fun outdoor easter activities!

Outdoor Easter games offer a family activity beyond the traditional Easter egg hunt. The games also lend themselves well indoors. This allows you to move the Easter activities indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Obstacle Course: An Easter-themed obstacle course gets everyone moving. Each player needs a spoon and a plastic Easter egg. The players balance the egg on the spoon while navigating an obstacle course set up in the back yard. Ideas for obstacles include sawhorses to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them. Egg Rolling: Each player needs a different color egg for this game. Place one white egg in the middle of the lawn. Each player takes a turn rolling their egg. The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. Katy Elks Score Again With Local Youth & Hoop Shoot This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest provided 150 plus local young people in the age group 9 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 13 the opportunity to take their next step toward Elks National recognition and free throw success. The journey began at Katy ISD elementary and junior schools under the direction of H.C. Grimet, Katy ISD Physical Education, Health and OLC curriculum Coordinator. Katy ISD is in its 32nd year of working with the Katy Elks in providing scholarship opportunities for area youth through the National Hoop Shoot program. Students winning at local schools were eligible to compete for the right to advance to District competition February 10th at Morton Ranch High School. From there winners advanced to State to Regional and finally to National Finals at Springfield, Mass. Winning first place honors and advancing to district are: Sean Leonida, Fielder Elem, age 8-9 male; Sophie Strong, Griffin Elem, age 8-9 female; Kaleb Crandall, Fielder Elem, age 10-11 male; Danyle Courtley, Rylander Elem, age 10-11 female; Austin Arnold, Memorial Parkway JH, age 12-13 male and Macy Ray, McMeans JH, age 12-13 female. Hoop Shoot, under the chairmanship of Daniel Tass, is only one of several programs the Katy Elks Lodge sponsors to provide opportunities to Katy area youth. BOY SCOUTS

Boy Scout Troop 1146 member James Whitley earns Eagle Rank James Whitley, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1146, Katy, TX, has successfully earned his Eagle Scout Rank. To become an Eagle Scout, James worked his way from Tiger Cub at age 6 through the Cub Scout ranks earning the Arrow of Light, the highest Cub Scout award, in 5th grade. As a Boy Scout, he earned 24 merit badges and held several key leadership positions in Troop 1146 including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Quartermaster. James has also achieved Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. James participated in two High Adventure camps including Sea Base in Florida and a 75-mile hike at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He also completed the “Mile Swim” twice during summer camps. For his Eagle Project, James planted trees in Bear Creek Park with the Harris County Parks Department and help from Troop 1146 scouts, parents and friends. This project reforested a portion of Bear Creek Park, which had lost trees damaged by Pine Bark Beetles. James is currently a junior at the James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas. He is a National Honor Society member and plays viola in the Taylor Philharmonic Orchestra. James would like to thank friends, scouts, leaders, parents, teachers and community members who helped him along the way to Eagle Scout rank.

SCHOOL NEWS BRISCOE JUNIOR HIGH BRISCOE LADY EAGLES BASKETBALL 1/10/13-LAMAR The Briscoe 8th grade Lady Eagles dropped a close game to the Lamar JH Ponies 15-23.   The Briscoe 8th Grade B team lost a tough game 15-18. The Briscoe 7A Lady Eagles defeated Lamar Jr. High 39-2 in a district match. The Eagles are 2-0 in district play. The Briscoe Lady Eagles 7B team defeated Lamar Jr High 18-9. The Lady Eagles now stand 2-0 in district play.

FOSTER HIGH CONTINUES DOMINANCE IN ENERGY QUEST For the third year in a row, the Foster High School Energy Quest team traveled to downtown Houston to flaunt their know-how when it comes to oil and natural gas. They competed against and outscored schools from all over Houston in a quiz-like competition centered on life in the oil industry. Foster remains the only school to ever win the competition. Put together three years ago by Foster Physics teacher Janie Head, this year’s 17 member team took on an extra work load to prepare for the quiz game and secure their winning streak. The team’s veteran members, seniors Diem Tran and Elizabeth Nguyen, reflect on the combination of strategy and instincts that secured their success. “We compete as well as we do because we study like crazy,” Nguyen said. “The competition gets increasingly harder, but with all the work we put into it, we expected to win.” Tran felt the pressure when other Houston area schools started closing in on the lead Foster set early in the competition. “In the first round, we were the only school to get a perfect score,” Tran said. “We were cool and confident, but the other teams really stepped up their game.” The honorary team captains weren’t about to give up on their team. “In the end we had earned the highest score of the day: 74 out of 80 points,” Nguyen said. “We celebrated our win and the fact we upheld our winning streak. Needless to say, we celebrated the loudest.” Sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Houston, Energy Quest is a fast‐paced quiz game that tests students’ knowledge of the global energy industry. The game is played in four rounds of 20 questions each. Foster competed against 23 other high schools.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by passing a State law. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona (although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time Zone. In 2005, President Bush signed into law a new energy policy bill that would extend Daylight Saving Time by 4 weeks beginning in 2007: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM on the second Sunday of March; Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 AM on the first Sunday of November. www.nasa.gov

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Games start on April 13, 2013. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 15,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. This was the Titans’ third straight appearance in the Turf Bowl and the victory was sweet. Their coaches (led by Robert Cortez), fans and team sponsor Modern Machine Works cheered the mighty Titans on. Most of the 9 and 10 year old boys attend Alexander, Creech or Exley - all located in Katy ISD - and have played together for several years. The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and resubscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are
