March 2013 Watch Your Signs!
Please make sure you take down your signs after a garage sale or election. Posting of signs is restricted by guidelines in your homeowner’s contract. West Memorial subdivision is a familyoriented neighborhood. We should resist the posting of signs, especially if we do not respect the community property and remove them after our event. Running a business out of your home is also restricted in your homeowner’s contract. Please be sure to read it carefully and adhere to all guidelines. We want our neighborhood to be a place people want to live! More information will be made available through other articles in the newsletter and through the West Memorial website as well.
West Memorial Swim Team
West Memorial Swim Team is gearing up for the 2013 season. Registrations will be taking place in April for children 5 to 18 years of age. WMST is a non-profit organization and member of the West Houston Aquatics League (WHALe). It is a fun and competitive way for the kids to spend part of their summer. The team will start practicing the first of May and the season runs through the month of June. If you have any questions, please contact Helen Helm at wmsttigersharks@gmail.com (email). Watch for our giant sharks for dates. We hope to see you this summer!
If you would be interested in sharing an article or otherwise contributing to the newsletter, please send your information and the article to info@westmemorial.org or to my direct email address at Charles@westmemorial.org It is still our neighborhood and your board of directors meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the clubhouse. Please come! Bring your concerns, your questions and your celebrations! We are here to help you! If you have questions about anything in our neighborhood, you should find a resource on our website or contact Tami Martin with High Sierra Management. Heavy Trash and/or extra bags are picked up on both pick-up days, Tuesday and Friday. Recycling is every Friday WCA takes great pride in our recycling program and efforts. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to bin. WCA will provide each current residence with one recycling bin. DEED RESTRICTIONS
The purpose of Deed Restrictions in your neighborhood is to protect and enhance property values. They set guidelines for initial construction, perpetual maintenance and property use. As residents agree to abide by the majority view; the style and standards of a community are established and everyone benefits. For your information, restrictions are written by the developer before the first home is constructed and the Association is then charged with the on-going responsibility of enforcing them. They can be changed, but a very large percentage vote of homeowners is required to do so. Please let us know if you see a problem in the neighborhood.

LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katy-based non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

KATY THEATRE ARTS BOOSTER CLUB BLANKET DELIVERY
On December 19th, The Katy High School Theatre Arts Booster Club delivered 62 hand-made fleece blankets to residents at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Facility and at the Heritage Park of Katy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Theatre students and Booster Club members made a total of 62 blankets to donate, 31 for each facility. They worked on the project during rehearsals of their upcoming musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. The blankets were cut from soft, fleece fabric and the edges were hand tied into a decorative fringe. “The residents were genuinely thrilled to receive the blankets,” said Booster Club President Kathryn Gilliam. Gilliam accompanied students, Hope Deverney and Shelby Barnhardt, to deliver blankets to the Cinco Ranch facility. “One lady immediately wrapped hers around her shoulders like a shawl,” Gilliam shared, “another resident, Ms. Maria, said it was so soft she would sleep with it.” Katy High School Theatre Director, Rachel Smith said, “I think students providing service to others in their community shows our kids how blessed they are and how necessary it is for them to think of others.” “I’m very proud of the Booster Club and the Theatre Students for making the effort to make these blankets during rehearsals for the musical,” Gilliam added. For more information, contact Kathryn Gilliam, KTABC President, at kathrynkamishgilliam@yahoo.com (email).

The program included a variety of music from the classic dance tune Sing, Sing, Sing, made famous by the Benny Goodman Big Band, all the way to a chart written this year, specifically for the Katy Jazz Band, titled C’Mire by the up and coming Jazz artist and 2006 Katy High School graduate Tyler Mire. Directors of the Jazz Program are Terence Gorton, Dale Fremin and Andrew Lee.

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
