A BIG SHOUT OUT TO OUR ANONYMOUS “GOOD DEED DOER”

The light covers at two of our entrances were blown off and some good neighbor (or neighbors) went out and replaced them atop the light standard. Our thanks to you!

Me? Sweeping the curbs? Picking up garbage out of the street? What? Why should I do that?

As you drive or walk through the neighborhood, you will notice that most homeowners and/or renters do a pretty good job of keeping the street and curbs clean in front of their homes as well as taking care of their own homes and yards. As they know, trash and piles of leaves and garbage next to curbs in a neighborhood can seriously detract from the beauty of the neighborhood, adversely affect property values and also create disharmony among neighbors. In line with that, let’s talk about sweeping the curbs and picking up garbage out of the street and parks (whether it’s “yours” or

not). The Westfield HOA does not hire someone to go through the neighborhood picking up trash and sweeping the curbs. Once in the street, parks or against the curb, trash and organic matter (leaves, pine needles, etc.) stays there until blown away or washed away and thus continues being a problem, albeit in another location. There is more than one reason for you to help by picking up trash out of the street, parks and along the curbs and sweeping the curbs free of tree leaves and other debris. Yes, it makes the neighborhood look a lot nicer and yes, it improves property values, but do you know there are also two other very important reasons: Keeping Texas beautiful and flood control. “What?” You say. Well, all the debris that lies alongside the curb and in the street and parks eventually ends up in our storm sewers and then goes directly into the bayous and from there straight into Galveston Bay. It is sad to see the trash that lines our bayous and litters Texas beaches. Cigarette butts alone constitute a large part of the problem. Grass clippings and leaves also can cause a serious sediment buildup in the sewers and bayous. Have you ever looked at the bayous in our area and noticed how in a short period of time a huge amount of sediment builds up? That is all the organic waste and trash that went into the sewer system under the street because it wasn’t cleaned up. That sediment build-up creates a huge problem for rainwater runoff. Simply put, the sediment takes up space that should be used for rainwater runoff and the trash? Well, trash is just ugly and it can definitely be dangerous to wildlife.

“Why should I do that?” Well, sweeping your curb and picking up garbage is doing your part to not just keep our neighborhood nice looking which protects our property value, but also helps keep clean our sewers, bayous, waterways and our beaches and additionally helps protect our homes from the threat of flooding. Taking care of more than just your property is an important lesson for your children to learn as they will hopefully be proud homeowners themselves one day and proud Texans, too. Pretty simple actions to take and with pretty amazing results. Now, everybody, grab your broom and trash bags and do your part! Let us help make Westfield (and Texas) more beautiful! (Parents: please talk to your teenagers about disposing of their fast food containers properly. The street is not their garbage can and they can actually be fined for littering.)

March Gardening Tips

vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.

If you need to contact Spectrum for any reason:

Deed Restriction Enforcement

Hazardous Household Waste

It is illegal to dump motor oil, paint, garden chemicals, and other materials down the street storm drains. These flow directly into our water supply. For more information, call 311 or go to www.houstonsolidwaste.org or http://texas.earth911.org/master.asp for more information about a wide range of environmental protection programs and news.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually

The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katy-based non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the naming of its newest campus, High School No. 7, after retired educator Obra D. Tompkins. Obra D. Tompkins High School is located at 4400 Falcon Landing Blvd. and is slated to open in August 2013. Tompkins served more than 39 years in the field of education, serving the bulk of his years as principal for Mayde Creek High School. He has been called a ‘trailblazer’ among his colleagues and has served in a number of capacities in education during his career. Tompkins retired in 2012 from his most recent position as Katy ISD’s executive director for campus administrative support. Katy ISD’s living namesakes have more than just years of education experience. They are community-minded individuals who mentor, participate in community projects and volunteer their time and resources to continue to make the Katy ISD community the leader in educational excellence.

TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANNOUNCED

During their regular January Board meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved Anthony “Tony” Tademy as the new head football coach and athletic coordinator for Obra D. Tompkins High School, slated to open in August 2013. Tademy comes to Katy ISD after serving as an assistant football coach for Duncanville High School in 2012 and serving as an assistant football coach for seven years at Texas Christian University. With more than 27 years of high school and collegiate coaching experience, Tademy’s record includes one high school state championship, a 2010 Rose Bowl win and six additional college Bowl wins. Tademy started his football career in 1985 as the assistant football coach at the Virginia Military Institute. He has held multiple assistant coach and defensive coordinator positions at top universities including Louisiana Tech University, University of Houston and Texas Christian University. Tademy holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech University. “Coach Tademy is bringing more than just extensive experience to Obra D. Tompkins High School,” says Principal Mark Grisdale. “He has coached and developed an impressive roster of players and has a reputation for integrity and leadership. I believe our student athletes will succeed with him as both a coach and a mentor.”
