RULES OF THE MONTH
As a reminder, Aberdeen Green is a deed restricted community with many rules each resident must follow in an effort to help maintain and increase our property values. So each month, we will provide information on the most noted rule violations from the prior month to help provide an extra reminder of our responsibilities as homeowners and good neighbors. STREET PARKING: Not only is continually parking in the street a violation of the rules, it causes a nuisance to your neighbors and safe access for traffic. Please utilize your driveway and garage to park your vehicles consistently. We understand you will have guests visit your home, but please also make an effort to use as much of your driveway as possible and remind your guests to be courteous to your neighbors when parking. PET ETIQUETTE: We understand your pets are very important to you and we want to be a pet friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it comes to pet etiquette. Please be aware and make a conscious effort to the adhere to the following guidelines: • Do not allow your pet to roam around the community and do not walk your pet without a leash • Pick up pet waste and discard properly

March Gardening Tips
vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers. com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through March. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT
Dear Parents and Community Members: The journey toward an equitable state funding system took a positive turn on February 4th when a Texas judge ruled the current system unconstitutional. District Judge John Dietz ruled in favor of the more than 600 Texas school districts - including Cypress-Fairbanks ISD - that filed a lawsuit against the state last year. In a statement regarding the ruling, Judge Dietz echoed many of the same comments he made while ruling the state funding system unconstitutional in 2005. He also voiced the same confusion for school finance that I and countless other educators, have felt for many years: “I have to say, there are 26 million Texans and I doubt there are 26 people in this state who understand this system,” he said. Judge Dietz also declared that “there has never been a more expeditious trial of a school finance case anywhere in the United States,” cementing my belief that this was the only logical decision to be made during this 44-day trial. I applaud Judge Dietz, the four plaintiff teams that defended the school districts’ case and the dozens of superintendents and school funding authorities who provided critical testimony in reaching this key decision. The final, written order in the case is expected to be delivered in early March, at which point the state has pledged to appeal the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court. Although there will be more obstacles before an agreeable solution is reached, we look forward to working with legislators and other state leaders as we plot the path toward equitable school finance. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D.

CY-HOPE GRANTS BENEFIT CFISD MUSIC PROGRAMS
A pair of grants from district supporter Cy-Hope, totaling $11,000, will benefit music programs at CFISD schools. One of the donations, in the amount of $10,000, will impact music programs at 18 elementary and six secondary campuses with 60 percent or more of students qualifying for free or reduced-price meals. The other $1,000 grant will fund the CFISD Choral Festival in the spring. For the organization’s support of CFISD music programs, the Board of Trustees recognized Cy-Hope representatives Lynda Zelenka, executive director and Dr. Betty Devine, during the Feb. 11th regular Board meeting at the Instructional Support Center (10300 Jones Road) at 6 PM. According to Zelenka, the donation came about when Dr. Devine - the founder and artistic director for the Houston Choral Society expressed a desire to give back to Cy-Hope through her passion for music.

“Music crosses all generations and all demographics. It can bring joy to so many people, no matter their economic status,” Zelenka said. “I think that’s critical in the lives of our students. It’s a blessing for us to be able to fill a gap and make the community aware of some of these needs in Title I schools.” Cy-Hope provided an additional $1,000 grant to fund reinstatement of the district wide Choral Festival for fifth-grade students, last held in 2006. The upcoming event will be held April 11th at the Berry Center. “Our teachers and students are very excited to bring back this great tradition,” said Loretta Bourn, coordinator for elementary music. “It’s a special opportunity for 340 voices to come together to sing at the Berry Center.”

The $10,000 donation is anticipated to benefit 16,564 elementary and 1,100 secondary students. A variety of needs will be addressed, including Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) registration assistance, music equipment for classrooms and additional master classes for secondary campuses. “We are grateful and excited that Cy-Hope has made this generous contribution for our students. This will benefit many of our programs which otherwise would not have this opportunity,” said Larry Matysiak, CFISD director of fine arts. “Our teachers and students are very excited about this wonderful grant, which will go a long way to help our students succeed.”

Tashrima Hossain, Cypress Falls Key Club Editor It’s a cold winter morning. A small girl sits under a brightly decorated tree and eagerly tears the red and green paper from a large box. Excitement fills her eyes as the contents of her gift are unveiled before her - coloring books, art sets and other trinkets. Her hospital gown drags across the ground as she runs to present her treasures to the nearby nurse. She and other grateful children spread light in the dimly lit room of the Texas Children’s Hospital as they see what Santa has in store for them.
DOOR DOCTOR
On Friday, December 21st, the Cy-Falls Key Club visited the Texas Children’s Hospital to deliver gifts to the young patients. Throughout the month of December, volunteers from the organization decorated gift bags, pillowcases and holiday cards to present to the children who would be staying at the hospital during the festive season.

When the Key Club volunteers visited the hospital, the staff was enthusiastic to learn of the Christmas surprises in store for their patients. The children were quite grateful upon receiving their presents as well.

Not only were the children thankful someone had them in mind this Christmas, but also the volunteers were enlightened by the experience. Without the generous donations from the Meadow’s Foundation, the project wouldn’t have been possible. The Cy-Falls Key Club was thankful for the funds to purchase the gifts for the hospital patients. This year, Santa took on a new name: the Cy-Falls Key Club. Every year, children throughout the world spend December mornings scurrying excitedly to their family’s tree to open gifts. At the Texas Children’s Hospital, however, the children are away from their home, their family and their traditions. Though many of them were tired from hours of chemotherapy or yet another surgery, they spent this winter smiling because Santa always cares. Key Club volunteers always care.

The Cookies are here! If we missed stopping by your house, look for cookie booth sales at area businesses. Sales of Girl Scout cookies provide funding for individual troops and help to support our great Council camps. Girl Scouts who participate in the annual cookie sale are learning about goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. That’s a great start for their future careers! Copper Corners Service Unit appreciates the support of their friends and neighbors. Thank you for buying Girl Scout cookies! We would also like to thank Selena Henderson and Kathy Hawse, our service unit coordinators and all our troop cookie moms and dads for all their hard work! In February, Girl Scouts celebrated Thinking Day on February 22nd with activities to help us learn about the World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts. We learn about the World Centers and about Girl Guides and Scouts in other countries. February 22nd was the birthday of Lord Robert Baden Powell, founder of the Scouting organization and Lady Baden Powell and on this day we remember our Scouting history.

the event have been the envy of those who didn’t attend. This year’s Dutch oven cook-off had lots of entries and everyone enjoyed the results. All we can say about this year’s talent show is - you had to be there! Many thanks to Julie Mayer and her team for organizing the weekend! On March 2nd, Copper Corners Girls and their special guys will have a “Bella notte” at the “Me and My Guy” event. Plan to get dressed in your best for an exciting evening of fun, food, dancing, crafts and more - all with an Italian theme. A group of girls and adults from several troops paid a special visit to the Cypresswood Nursing and Rehabilitation facility on Feb. 9th. They assisted the residents in making “Valentine” Chinese lanterns and Valentine cards, decorated a Valentine mailbox and served cookies, brownies and other treats. Working and visiting together was a lot of fun and the results were really creative! We are already starting to make plans for a “Bridging event” this spring, as girls move on to new levels in Girl Scouting. As part of the bridging activities, older troops work with younger girls as they prepare to move on to the next level of Girl Scouting. Many of our troops will earn their special bridging patches in the process as they complete various activities. Girl Scouting is open to all girls aged 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required.
March 12th will be the 101st birthday for Girl Scouting in the United States. Many of our Copper Corners Girl Scouts will be celebrating with birthday parties and special service projects. Girls may participate in special roles at their place of worship on Girl Scout Sunday or Girl Scout Sabbath.
Copper Corners service unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle Schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. It is never too late to become a Girl Scout.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is
Aberdeen Green
There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Jews for Jesus has presented this demonstration in over five thousand churches. It was originally written in 1956 by Moishe Rosen, the founder and former executive director of Jews for Jesus. The presentation was abstracted from the writings of the late Rabbi Leopold Cohn, who came to faith in Jesus in 1894 and died in 1936. Dr. Rosen contends that some of the most important elements of Christian doctrine, such as the Trinity, the principle of substitutionary atonement and salvation through a personal relationship with the Messiah, are implied in the Seder (Passover feast) as observed by Orthodox Jews even today. According to Dr. Rosen, “The Christ in the Passover presentation is one way Jews for Jesus can help churches appreciate the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church is located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center). There is not cost for the event but a love offering will be taken. Everyone is invited to attend this special worship celebration and learning opportunity. If you need more information, please call the church at 281-859-4141.

Veterinary Public Health Division HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS
In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.
