LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or the owner can pick up their lost pet. BOY SCOUTS Boy Scout Troop 61 Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for for-

Sports Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club orientation/Registration The Northwest Flyers Track Club will host an orientation/registration session for all middle and high school athletes and their parents interested in joining for the 2013 season. The event will be held on Friday, April 12th, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM at Cypress Creek High School, 9815 Grant Rd., Houston. The Northwest Flyers is a youth (ages 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field. The club provides a full program of “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays and “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. It is an excellent “off-season” program for young athletes who currently compete on their middle school or high school track teams. Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the Spring Season. Games start on April 13, 2013.

FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 15,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. What do the Jewish Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper have in common? A representative of Jews for Jesus will answer that question in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover” on Holy (Maundy) Thursday, March 28th at 7 PM at Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

Using a visual display of traditional Passover accouterments, the “Christ in the Passover” presentation enhances the Christian’s understanding and appreciation of the Jewish background of the Christian Communion. Ancient and modern Jewish customs are discussed and described with an emphasis on the aspect of redemption, which Christ accomplished at Calvary. A table is set with the traditional Jewish Passover items, including representative foods, which are explained, but not eaten. The ceremonial seder plate, the three-compartment pouch in which the matzo (unleavened bread) is kept, as well as the traditional cup of Elijah are presented and new insights to their christological significance are provided. Jews for Jesus has presented this demonstration in over five thousand churches. It was originally written in 1956 by Moishe Rosen, the founder and former executive director of Jews for Jesus. The presentation was abstracted from the writings of the late Rabbi Leopold Cohn, who came to faith in Jesus in 1894 and died in 1936.

Dr. Rosen contends that some of the most important elements of Christian doctrine, such as the Trinity, the principle of substitutionary atonement and salvation through a personal relationship with the Messiah, are implied in the Seder (Passover feast) as observed by Orthodox Jews even today. According to Dr. Rosen, “The Christ in the Passover presentation is one way Jews for Jesus can help churches appreciate the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.”

HOLY WEEK WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Holy Week represents the last week of Jesus’ life on earth, beginning with his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and culminating with his glorious resurrection from the dead the following Sunday, Easter. This year, Holy Week is from Sunday, March 24th through Sunday, March 31st. During this week, cornerstone United Methodist Church will be offering a variety of worship and fellowship opportunities at their West Road Campus at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center). The following is a list of the Holy Week worship opportunities for young and old alike presently planned at Cornerstone UMC. • PALM SUNDAY SERVICES (March 24th): At the 10:45 AM service, the children will lead a processional in worship waving palm branches as we remember and celebrate Jesus entry into Jerusalem. Also at the 8:30 and 10:45 AM services, the Chancel Choir accompanied by an orchestra will be performing their Easter Cantata. The Journey Praise Band will lead an inspirational service at 9:30 AM with a special “Reader’s Theater” presentation. • MAUNDY THURSDAY COMMUNION SERVICE (March 28th): The word Maundy literally means “command,” reminding Christians that Jesus commanded his followers at the Last Supper to “do this in remembrance of me.” A representative from “Jews for Jesus” will be present a special program entitled, “Christ in the Passover.” The service will be held at 7 PM and will include the serving of Holy Communion. • GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE (March 29th): At 7 PM, we will gather to commemorate the crucifixion of our Lord with a blackening of the sanctuary. Special music for the service will be provided by the Chancel Choir accompanied by a Good Friday Drama. • EASTER MORNING WORSHIP SERVICES (March 31st): There will be several opportunities to worship the resurrection of our Lord. At 6:30 AM, the Youth will be leading a “Sunrise” service. At 8:30 & 10:45 AM, we will have inspiring services with the Chancel Choir and an accompanying orchestra providing the special music. LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually

The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katybased non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. During the January Katy ISD Board Work Study meeting, Officer Ryan P. Gonzales was sworn-in to serve on the 37-member Katy ISD Police Force. Officer Gonzales has 10 years of experience in law enforcement, having served as a Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable and Fort Bend County Deputy Sheriff. Gonzales’ roots are in public education as his father, Richard Gonzales, is an associate principal in Fort Bend ISD and his mother, Marilyn Gonzales, is a Katy ISD educator. Gonzales resides within Katy ISD with his wife of thirteen years, Amiko and two children, Brendon and Kylee. Katy ISD peace officers are licensed and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. The Katy ISD police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the district (181 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the district that is owned, leased or rented by the district or otherwise under the district’s control. Ingredients 12 hard-cooked eggs 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons 2% milk Additional paprika

Directions Slice eggs in half lengthwise; remove yolks and set whites aside. In a small bowl, mash yolks. Add the next 10 ingredients; mix well. Stuff or pipe into egg whites. Garnish with parsley and paprika. Refrigerate until serving. Yield: 2 dozen.

Stuffed Baby Red Potatoes from Taste of Home© 2012 Ingredients 24 small red potatoes (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1/4 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided 1/2 cup crumbled cooked bacon, divided 2/3 cup Daisy Brand Sour Cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/8 teaspoon paprika

Ingredients 1/2 fully cooked bone-in ham (6 to 7 pounds) 2 cups apple cider 1 cup honey 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon butter 2 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice Directions Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep. Cover and bake at 325° for 2 hours. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, combine the cider, honey, vinegar and mustard; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Stir in the butter, chili powder and apple pie spice. Set aside 1 cup for serving. Cook the remaining sauce until thickened; spoon over ham. Bake, uncovered, 30-35 minutes longer or until a thermometer reads 140°. Warm reserved sauce; serve with ham Yield: 10 servings (1 cup sauce).

Directions Scrub potatoes; place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain.When cool enough to handle, cut a thin slice off the top of each potato. Scoop out pulp, leaving a thin shell. (Cut thin slices from potato bottoms to level if necessary.) In a large bowl, mash the potato tops and pulp with butter. Set aside 2 tablespoons each of cheese and bacon for garnish; add remaining cheese and bacon to potatoes. Stir in the sour cream, egg, salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into potato shells. Top with remaining cheese and bacon; sprinkle with paprika. Place in an ungreased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 375° for 12-18 minutes or until heated through. Yield: 2 dozen.

PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.

Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.

DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. WCA collects our trash on Tuesdays and Fridays. Poly-carts, heavy trash and extra bags or items will be picked up on both days. Recycling picked up on Tuesdays only. The homeowner’s maintenance fee does not pay for garbage pick-up. You must call CWA to start service. Poly-carts and recycling bins are provided free of charge to homeowners or residents. When regular pick-up falls on a holiday, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, the pick-up will be made on the next regular scheduled pick up day. If your recycling day falls on a holiday it will be picked up the next week on your normal scheduled recycle day. WCA will collect for recycling, papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed in the recycling bin. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to the bin. If you find items left in the bin, that are not recyclable, please dispose of the items in your polycart. Trees, shrubs, brush trimmings and fencing must be bundled in lengths no greater than 4 feet, with no branch diameter exceeding 3 inches. Items that will be picked up, such as: appliances, furniture, carpet (up to 1 room, rolled up four feet wide and less than fifty pounds), cardboard boxes (flattened). Refrigerators and freezers or any other items containing Freon must be drained of Freon and have an accompanying bill to validate such service was performed. Items excluded from normal collection are dirt, rocks, bricks, concrete, tires, batteries, motor oil, cooking oil, waste generated by a private contractor or any materials or items deemed hazardous materials.
