Oil Stain Clean Up 1. Clean up any fresh oil stains by blotting the surface with newspaper. 2. Sprinkle a layer of clay-based cat box litter over the top of the oil stain. You want to completely cover the stain so that you can no longer see it through the litter. The litter will soak up the oil from the concrete. 3. Monitor the color of the litter several times while it is sitting on the stain. As the oil becomes absorbed into the litter, it will change to a darker color. When the litter changes colors, remove the old litter by sweeping it up with a broom. Dispose of the discolored litter as you did the oil-soaked newspapers. Sprinkle more litter onto the stain the same way you did in the prior step and continue to let it soak up the oil. Leave the stain covered with litter for a minimum of one day. Clean away all the litter after 24 hours. Sweep up the litter and dispose of it. 4. Apply a liquid dish detergent with grease-cutting agents to the oil stain. Use a scrub brush to rub the detergent into the stain. 5. Allow the detergent to settle for five minutes, then scrub the detergent into the stain again using short, circular movements. 6. Poor 1 cup of boiling water on to the dish detergent covered stain. Use your scrub brush to rub the water and soap into the stain. Take care not to burn yourself. 7. Blot up the now oily and soapy water with newspaper after the mixture has cooled for several minutes. Dispose of the newspaper. Continue to blot the area until you have absorbed all of the oily water. 8. Pour another 2 cups of boiling water over the stain. This will wash away any oily water that was not absorbed by the newspaper. Be careful not to burn yourself. If the stain is still present, repeat the process

Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

40 Something 40 Something is a social group for people over fifty. The group meets the 2nd Saturday each month for socializing, cards and dominos. The meetings are held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton at 6:30 PM. The club offers one bus trip a month and several dining outs throughout the year. If you would like further information, please call Dorothy at 713-856-6987 or JoAnn at 281-550-8162.

vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers. com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! – DANGERS OF FAST FOOD It’s convenient, cheap and even available within 5 minutes or less: FAST FOOD. What does this quick goodness really do to your body and health? Read on and that burger or bean burrito won’t look or taste so yummy anymore: • Fast Food Affects Energy Levels. Fast food doesn’t contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued with a lack of energy. Because fast food and junk food don’t contain adequate protein and good carbohydrates, blood sugar levels drop quickly after eating, leaving you grumpy, fatigued and craving sugar. • Fast Food Causes Obesity & Deathly Illnesses. Fast food has a surplus of fat and as fat accumulates in your body, you gain weight and become obese, putting you at risk for strokes, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even a heart attack. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food causes high blood pressure or hypertension. Excessive dietary sodium can also have a negative effect on renal function, even leading to kidney disease. • Fast Food Damages the Liver & Heart. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food raise blood cholesterol levels and contribute to arterial plaque build-up. The high levels of trans fatty acids in fast foods leads to fatty liver deposits, which cause liver dysfunction and disease.

Fun outdoor easter activities!

Outdoor Easter games offer a family activity beyond the traditional Easter egg hunt. The games also lend themselves well indoors. This allows you to move the Easter activities indoors if the weather does not cooperate. Obstacle Course: An Easter-themed obstacle course gets everyone moving. Each player needs a spoon and a plastic Easter egg. The players balance the egg on the spoon while navigating an obstacle course set up in the back yard. Ideas for obstacles include sawhorses to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them.

The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. YOUR HEALTH NOW! - Wellness Tip!

There’s a big secret when it comes to weight loss: decrease sugar and salt. How do you decrease sugar and salt from your diet and what does this do? • Begin by reducing your caffeine in-take, be it coffee, tea or soda. By reducing these items by just one glass, you’re reducing your sugar in-take. • Decrease the number of teaspoons of sugar in your coffee and tea by one teaspoon. And if you MUST have it sweeter, replace with half a teaspoon honey. • Instead of eating an entire snack bag of chips, eat only half and you will reduce sodium big time. • Purchase low sodium foods and snacks. You will never miss the extra salt.

Quilt Show,

presented by West Houston Quilt Guild

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having

deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. THE NATIONAL HISPANIC RECOGNITION PROGRAM The National Hispanic Recognition Program provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies them for postsecondary institutions. Forty-nine Hispanic Scholars and seven honorable mention selections have been recognized as Scholars by the College Board’s National Recognition Program. They are among a select group of 5,000 of the highest-scoring high school juniors who took the PSAT/ NMSQT and designated themselves as Hispanic. From Cy-Lakes, Shea Forcade and Karina Zemel were named Hispanic Scholars and Dallas Nicole Sanchez was named honorable mention.

NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Black students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and meeting other published requirements for participation. The two annual programs are conducted concurrently but operated and funded separately. Of the more than 160,000 students who currently enter the National Achievement Program each year, approximately 4,700 are honored. A group of about 3,100 are referred to colleges for their potential for academic success. A smaller group of about 1,600 are named semifinalists. Three CyLakes’ students were referred to colleges by National Achievement: Kaie Essence Bodden, Valerie Ikhimokpa and Tevin Richards. The names of all the above students will be displayed on the Wall of Fame in the foyer at Cy-Lakes.

CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

WWW.CFISD.NET IMPORTANT DATES March 11th - 15th - Spring Break March 29th - Student/Staff Holiday

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT Dear Parents and Community Members: The journey toward an equitable state funding system took a positive turn on February 4th when a Texas judge ruled the current system unconstitutional. District Judge John Dietz ruled in favor of the more than 600 Texas school districts - including Cypress-Fairbanks ISD - that filed a lawsuit against the state last year. In a statement regarding the ruling, Judge Dietz echoed many of the same comments he made while ruling the state funding system unconstitutional in 2005. He also voiced the same confusion for school finance that I and countless other educators, have felt for many years:

23

“I have to say, there are 26 million Texans and I doubt there are 26 people in this state who understand this system,” he said. Judge Dietz also declared that “there has never been a more expeditious trial of a school finance case anywhere in the United States,” cementing my belief that this was the only logical decision to be made during this 44-day trial. I applaud Judge Dietz, the four plaintiff teams that defended the school districts’ case and the dozens of superintendents and school funding authorities who provided critical testimony in reaching this key decision. The final, written order in the case is expected to be delivered in early March, at which point the state has pledged to appeal the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court. Although there will be more obstacles before an agreeable solution is reached, we look forward to working with legislators and other state leaders as we plot the path toward equitable school finance. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D.

According to Zelenka, the donation came about when Dr. Devine - the founder and artistic director for the Houston Choral Society - expressed a desire to give back to Cy-Hope through her passion for music.

CY-HOPE GRANTS BENEFIT CFISD MUSIC PROGRAMS

The $10,000 donation is anticipated to benefit 16,564 elementary and 1,100 secondary students. A variety of needs will be addressed, including Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) registration assistance, music equipment for classrooms and additional master classes for secondary campuses.

A pair of grants from district supporter Cy-Hope, totaling $11,000, will benefit music programs at CFISD schools. One of the donations, in the amount of $10,000, will impact music programs at 18 elementary and six secondary campuses with 60 percent or more of students qualifying for free or reduced-price meals. The other $1,000 grant will fund the CFISD Choral Festival in the spring. For the organization’s support of CFISD music programs, the Board of Trustees recognized Cy-Hope representatives Lynda Zelenka, executive director and Dr. Betty Devine, during the Feb. 11th regular Board meeting at the Instructional Support Center (10300 Jones Road) at 6 PM

24

“Music crosses all generations and all demographics. It can bring joy to so many people, no matter their economic status,” Zelenka said. “I think that’s critical in the lives of our students. It’s a blessing for us to be able to fill a gap and make the community aware of some of these needs in Title I schools.” Cy-Hope provided an additional $1,000 grant to fund reinstatement of the district wide Choral Festival for fifth-grade students, last held in 2006. The upcoming event will be held April 11th at the Berry Center. “Our teachers and students are very excited to bring back this great tradition,” said Loretta Bourn, coordinator for elementary music. “It’s a special opportunity for 340 voices to come together to sing at the Berry Center.”

“We are grateful and excited that Cy-Hope has made this generous contribution for our students. This will benefit many of our programs which otherwise would not have this opportunity,” said Larry Matysiak, CFISD director of fine arts. “Our teachers and students are very excited about this wonderful grant, which will go a long way to help our students succeed.”

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through March. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
