NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS You just never know when one of your neighbors will be famous. In this case, I’m referring to one of our NC homeowners, Gene Britton, who is also my neighbor. Gene was featured in the Houston Chronicle in January on the cover of the Katy section. Gene is part of the Watch Dogs program at NC Elementary School. This appears to be an excellent organization that encourages dads to spend time in school with their children. For more information, you can go to www.fathers.com I have long been an advocate of community service and in particular, mentoring juveniles. We continue to see juveniles in this country shooting each other, taking their own lives and committing crimes. Perhaps some of this can be avoided if these teens have a responsible adult in their lives. With so many broken homes today, these kids may not have enough parental input. We have many retired folks here in NC. What better way to get involved in your community than by getting involved with our schools! Hopefully, some of you will take a look at this great program - or other mentoring programs - and decide to become involved. Don’t torpedo your home Yahoo recently featured an interesting article called “10 Things that will Torpedo the Value of your Home.” With the buying season in full force, here they are in order of priority: 1. Lack of Curb Appeal (If the outside looks bad, most likely so will the inside) 2. Bad Exterior of the Home (See #1) 3. Outdated Kitchen 4. Outdated Bathrooms 5. Taste Specific Decorating (You make like purple walls but not everyone does) 6. Design Specific Renovations 7. Do it yourself Projects Gone Awry (If you don’t know how to do something, might be a good idea to high a pro) 8. Pet odors 9. Wasted Square Footage 10. Water features (pools, spas, etc. as some buyers do not want them)
Regardless of whether or not you are trying to sell now, it’s a good idea to keep this list in mind for the future. Houses in Nottingham Country sell quickly, but the catch is that they have to be in great shape! Most of the foreclosures in NC have been purchased by investors who renovate them and reap the rewards when they sell. This has been a huge positive for all of us, as it keeps our home values intact. Odds and ends Something else to be mindful of this time of year is termite infestation. One of my neighbors just had to spend $2,000 on termite damage, so it’s a good idea to periodically check around your foundation to see if you see any termite tunnels. If you do, get the exterminator out before you have costly damage.

Estate Your Real Life! r o f e c r u o Res Please, also be advised that Harris County traffic laws do not allow disabled cars to remain on public streets. We have had several of these cases in recent months. We have asked our Constables to ticket any and all disabled vehicles that are parked on the streets. Disabled means wrecked or damaged vehicles and cars with flat tires or dead batteries. The ticket states that the vehicle must be removed within 72 hours or it will be towed away at the owner’s expense. We intend to enforce this law, so if you have a vehicle that falls into this category, please remove it from the subdivision streets or park it inside your garage. As of February 15th, about 300 homeowners have not paid their 2013 assessment, which was due 1/1/13. Late fees are now accruing, so it makes sense to pay up (unless you like throwing money out the window). If you haven’t made your payment, please do so now. Don Mach NCCIA President and Legal Liaison
Heavy Trash Day - Saturday - April 20 th From 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM, there will be heavy trash pickup in the Nottingham Elementary School (Kingsland and Rennie) back parking lot. This is our spring pickup and another one will not be scheduled until next fall. This is for heavy trash items only. There will be personnel on site to assist in unloading. Waste oil, paint, tires and other chemicals considered environmentally hazardous will not be accepted. This is an excellent time to clean out the garage, etc. and have it hauled off for free. In driving around the subdivision and seeing some of the open garages and driveways, it would appear there are a number of homeowners that should seriously consider cleaning up their property and this would be an excellent time to do so.

PALM TREES Recently, we’ve heard from several homeowners about palm trees. It seems we have two problems in Nottingham Country - rodents and landscaping. Both are related and involve the palm trees. Nottingham Country has numerous palm trees, mostly in the back yards and around swimming pools. While these trees do not provide much shade, they do withstand windstorms and look tropical. The complaints we have involve the unsightly appearance caused by the dead fronds extending down the trunks. “Skinning” is the term that refers to removing dead leaves from the palms. As the fronds die, they can create a thatched, hula-skirt look. Some like this petticoat, others don’t. To create a tidier look and neater appearance, prune the dead fronds after late Spring/early Summer blooms. It’s important to avoid scarring the trunk when pruning palms because they are a dicot and their trunks do not heal over like oaks or pines. Never cut the terminal end of a palm trunk or the plant will die. The other issue is that these dead fronds provide nesting places for rodents (rats and squirrels) to live. Pruning the trees may or may not cause the rats to relocate. Pruning will not kill the rats. Mothballs and ammonia will discourage the rodents from climbing the trunks as will a metal cone around the palm trunk. If you have palm trees in your yard, you will probably need a professional to remove the fronds due to the height of the trees and the fact that the fronds are very tough and have sharp spines or edges. Likewise, you may want to engage a pest control company to eliminate the rodent problem if they relocate to other parts of your property. It appears that at this time, there is a rat problem in some areas of NC, so the more we can do to eliminate the nesting areas for these pests, the better we will all be. By NO means do you want the rats to eventually move into your attics, as then it becomes a very expensive problem to deal with!

Foreclosures in Nottingham Country The following is the current inventory of foreclosed homes in NC as of 2/6/13 ADDRESS OWNER 1327 Dominion Central Mortgage 402 Sancroft GMAC Mortgage Bank of America 1514 Hannington Chase Mortgage 510 Rennie 20322 Kingsland Wells Fargo Bank of New York, Trustee 1019 Barkston 1107 Pittsford Ct Bank of New York, Trustee U.S. Bank 20507 Manette To be determined 1123 Dominion Several of these are under contract and should close soon. Many of the new ones have been delinquent with NCCIA for many years and obviously their mortgage holders. Right now, mortgage companies are behind in the foreclosure process, so we may continue to see an increase for a few months. The good news is that these typically are selling very quickly with most of the new owners doing a lot of good repairs to the properties and thus enhancing values throughout the neighborhood. Please be mindful of these vacant homes and try to assist in keeping them looking decent from the street if at all possible. If any homeowner is aware of an abandoned home that is not on this list, please contact the Board and we will check into it. Occasionally, homeowners will leave a home in anticipation of foreclosure. How to address the Board directly The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via e-mail (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry. org). “While we are very pleased that our students outperformed the state, that is not our only goal,” says Katy ISD Superintendent, Alton Frailey. “While we will remain competitive with our peer districts within the state accountability system, our primary objective is to provide each student high quality and comprehensive learning experiences.” The STAAR test assesses student performance based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives developed by the TEA. Because students took the STAAR test for the first time in 2012, test scores will not count in any way toward a student’s 2012 - 2013 state testing results, regardless if they passed or failed the test. The TEA is currently in the process of developing a new accountability system for the 2013 - 2014 school year. Additionally, the TEA will not be assigning accreditation status to school districts in 2012 - 2013.

During the next two weeks, parents will receive their child’s Confidential Student Report, which provides a summary of how their child performed. Because the STAAR assessments are new and more rigorous than past TAKS assessments, many parents may see test scores that differ from previous TAKS test results. “The change in scores is not a reflection of the education that students receive as we continue to provide high-quality instruction that students and parents expect in Katy ISD,” says Katy ISD’s Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Christine Caskey. “Not only is STAAR more rigorous than TAKS, this was the first time students saw the format of the new test. As students and teachers become more familiar with STAAR, we anticipate that future scores will improve.” Students who participate in the 2013 spring administration of STAAR will receive a new Confidential Student Report near the end of the 2013 school year. The 2013 spring administration of the STAAR will be the first set of test results that will count toward a student’s state testing performance.
TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL MASCOT The administration at Obra D. Tompkins High School has officially announced that the mascot for the school will be the Falcons. Immediately after the Board of Trustees named the new high school, campus administration started the mascot recommendation process, inviting input from students, staff, parents and the Tompkins HS community. After all names were submitted, Principal Mark Grisdale and staff members met with members of the incoming student body to discuss and vote on the top recommendations, ultimately revealing the winning mascot name. “It was great to have the Katy ISD community involved in our selection process,” says Grisdale. “The campus is now working with the Katy ISD department of communications to develop an official logo.” The Tompkins High School colors are crimson, navy blue and white. For more information visit the Tompkins High School webpage.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company proudly presents Ravenscroft, by Don Nigro, Thursday through Saturday and Monday, May 3-18, 2013 with a preview on Thursday, May 2nd. Directed by Rob Kimbro and starring Sean Patrick Judge, Michelle Edwards, Claire Anderson, Karen Schlag, Zoquera Millburne and Kara Ray. SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. You’ll never look at Agatha Christie quite the same way again… Paolo Alto Weekly

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.
• Weekly Pool Cleaning Service • Repairs • Renovations
In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.
Factory Warranty Service for Pentair
There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.
281-395-4269
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

NCL Star Chapter The Star Chapter of NCL celebrated the Senior Class of 2013 in the ballroom of the Marriott Houston Westchase February 17th. We recognized each of these 21 young ladies for what they have accomplished in the past six years in the NCL organization. They have contributed over 5,000 hours to their chapter and community working through 24 local charities. Each young lady learned how to serve her community, be a leader and open her eyes to the cultural arts around her. The Star Chapter is dedicated to mothers and daughters serving together and building a close relationship, which together empowers them to be confident, well rounded and socially aware contributors in their communities.

Amid Mardi Gras festivities, delicious steaks and chicken provided by Outback, “to die for” bread pudding from “Babin’s Seaford House” and “Katy Cajun” plus the amazing music of “The Green Onions,” the Gulf Coast Elks crowned yet another District Sweetheart. The Elks Sweetheart Program involves each lodge selecting a Sweetheart to raise funds for the Texas State Project - special needs children. Each year at this time, a District Charity Ball is held to celebrate the successes and show appreciation for the hard work of our lodge sweethearts with the one with the most money being honored as Gulf Coast District Sweetheart. Those representing the various lodges were: Catherine Bulliner, Clearlake; Carol Marek, El Campo; Connie Claypool, Galveston; Al Olmos, Houston; Dorris Conley, Katy and Sandra Black, Pearland. After all totals were reported and tabulated, Catherine Bulliner of Clearlake was 3rd, Al Olmos of Houston was 2nd and Dorris Conley of Katy was crowned District Sweetheart.

The state winner will be announced at the Texas Elks State Association convention in Addison in June. The Gulf Coast District holds claim to 10 state wins out of the 34 years one has been crowned. This is with 9 districts competing. Funds raised through this program provide summer camp at Texas Elk Camp located at Ottine, between Lulling and Gonzales, as well as needed equipment that insurance doesn’t cover and parents can’t afford. It is time to find those old eyeglasses and put them to a good use! During the months of April and May, the Fulshear-Simonton Lions Club is partnering with the New Creation Lutheran Church members who will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses, frames and sunglasses. If you have any of these unwanted eyeglasses, please drop them in the blue, white and yellow boxes marked “Lions Recycle for Site” around Fulshear. These boxes can be found in Fulshear at The Essence House Café, Fulshear City Hall, Fulshear Car Care, The Bob Lutz Library, Huggins Elementary, Kut-n-Up Hair Salon, Dozier’s, Commercial State Bank and Wallis State Bank. You can also find them at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. Once collected, the glasses are sent to one of ten Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers where they are repaired, cleaned and categorized by prescription. They will then be sent out for distribution in American and around the world.
As of Sunday, March 17th, Mrs. Antoinette Chew became the Children’s Pastor at COTHA. Her objective is to provide an environment where children are encouraged to develop their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She will teach them about the Bible and God, while nurturing their spiritual gifts. Her responsibilities include, but

are not limited to, acquiring, preparing and organizing curriculum for each age level K- 5th grade. She will create environments to facilitate learning and encourage spiritual growth. She will plan and oversee any event or special activity involving the COTHA kids and will engage their families by expanding spiritual influence outside of COTHA. Mrs. Antoinette Chew is a proud wife and mother to three children ages 7, 10 and 15. A graduate of Texas State University, Mrs. Chew was raised in New Jersey, but has been a Texan since 1993. Mrs. Chew has been in the Christian community since birth and been involved with Christian children’s programs since 1996. She worked as St. Johns Children’s Choir Director, St. Michaels Children’s Choir Director, Children’s Ministry Coordinator and most recently an elementary and early childhood music teacher. Mrs. Chew has assisted with VBS at various churches and attended pastoral conferences in order to stay current with emerging curriculums and trends. One of her more recent children’s programs doubled in size, in part by involving her rich history in the performing arts. “It is my greatest joy to teach children of all ages. I love fostering the love of music and theatre in my students all for the glory of God,” Chew said. “I am thrilled to join the COTHA family. This is the perfect environment to work with children from all walks of life.” This violin playing soprano singing Christian teacher says she is not afraid of breaking new ground to create engaging programs for children of all ages.
