MONTHLY HOA MEETINGS Make sure you know what is happening in the Pin Oak Village HOA meetings by attending. Meetings are held at 6:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month.
MORE THAN 50 U.S. CITIES TO HOLD EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF WILLIAMS SYNDROME AWARENESS WEEK Our family lives in Pin Oak Village and we are the parents of Lila (10) who was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome at 6 months old. Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition, which affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide. Lila was born in Katy at St. Catherine Hospital and attends Hutsell Elementary in the Life Skills program. In the Katy area alone, we have 4 families with children in elementary, 1 who attends HS and 1 who has graduated. As with any disability, awareness, inclusion and acceptance are our goals for our children. On June 1, 2013, we will be hosting our Walk4Williams and family picnic event. There is more specific information on the walk in the dated events section of the newsletter. More than 6000 Across the Country Expected to “Walk-for-Williams” Thousands of children and adults are expected to join the Williams Syndrome Association May 5th-12th to raise awareness for Williams syndrome, a genetic disorder that remains virtually unknown to the general public, educators and many doctors. Included in the awareness events are more than fifty walks in cities across the U.S. including Houston, New York, St. Louis, Detroit, San Diego and Dallas.
The week-long activities are being held to help raise funds for critical scientific research and programs for individuals run by the Williams Syndrome Association. New research can lead to further insights about the disorder and new treatments for the future. Scientists are particularly interested in cardiovascular disorders and neuro-developmental issues in Williams syndrome, which may contribute to greater understanding of common problems such as hypertension and anxiety, which affect millions of Americans. Recently featured on ABC 20/20 and MSNBC, Williams syndrome is characterized by medical and developmental delays, cardiovascular disease and learning disabilities. At the same time, people with Williams syndrome often have unique abilities, including advanced verbal skills, highly sociable personalities and an affinity for music. Children with Williams syndrome need costly, ongoing medical care and early interventions that may not be covered by insurance or state funding. About the Williams Syndrome Association The Williams Syndrome Association (WSA) is a volunteer organization formed in 1982 by family members of people living with the disorder. Today, the WSA is the most comprehensive resource for people and families living with Williams syndrome as well as doctors, researchers and educators, providing programs and support in the areas of education, enrichment and research. For more information on the Williams Syndrome Association, please visit www.williams-syndrome.org

CLUBHOUSE RENTALS
STREETLIGHTS
Martha Baxter is in charge of the clubhouse rentals. Pool rentals are still done through Michelle at Sweetwater Pool Company. There are still lots of good dates available for free clubhouse use. We would like to remind all residents that the clubhouse is for Members Only and must be current on all fees. Residents are limited to two free uses per year. There is a $100 DEPOSIT REQUIRED THAT WILL BE REFUNDED, IF THE CLUBHOUSE IS KEPT CLEAN. The clubhouse is also being reserved for possible holiday party use by the Board, for the benefit of Pin Oak Village residents. These parties will be scheduled soon, so watch for upcoming events at our website, www.pinoakvillagekaty.com.
The MUD taxes the residents pay help pay for the streetlights whether they work or not. If a streetlight is out or not working properly, please call 713-207-2222 and report the problem. Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. Last year we had a couple of lights out and the result was vandalism to several mailboxes. We need all lights working to keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of these lights.
To schedule lifeguards for any pool party, contact Michelle with Sweetwater pools at 281-300-6077. There is an additional form for Pool Rental, as well as cost, that must be filled out and paid prior to scheduling lifeguards. No pool party can be had without the approval of Sweetwater and at least one additional guard. Feel free to contact Martha at 281-392-8007. Martha’s address is 24606 Mt. Auburn Drive. Martha’s email address is as follows: rbaxter724@ aol.com. Due to the many clubs and church groups that have reserved weekly dates being sought for by residents, the preference for use will be given to residents needs over weekly functions. Jeff will do his best to accommodate both weekly reservations and resident’s use.

TRASH PICKUP UPDATE The correct contact for trash pickup for Pin Oak village is as follows: Waste Corporation of Texas (WCA) 281-368-8397. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Pin Oak Village

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The typical answer will be: • Early spring - once, February through April • Late spring - once, April through June • Summer - once, June through August • Fall - once, September through November The easiest way to remember your lawn fertilizing schedule, is to fertilize around four major holidays: • Easter (or mid-March) • Fourth of July • Labor Day • Christmas
YOUR HEALTH NOW! - DINING OUT TIP The temptations of eating so-called “healthy” favorites are so easy to give into when at restaurants. Thanks to Grand Lakes’ resident, Kelly G., we have a great list of “tempting foods” and also the athome versions of some of your restaurant favorites. Thank you, Kelly! • Temptation #1: Cobb Salad; are loaded with cheese, bacon, egg and topped with a creamy dressing. At-Home Version: Use dark lettuce, like spinach or arugula, to get the most nutritional value. Top it with hard-boiled egg whites, baked turkey bacon, light cheese, avocado and drizzle lemon juice and vinegar for dressing. • Temptation Food #2: Spinach Artichoke Dip; just half a cup of this creamy dip will set you back about 350 calories. At-Home Version: Use low-fat milk, spinach, some olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. • Temptation #3: Chicken Tenders. This is basically fried chicken. Enough said.

At-Home Version: Whip up a few eggs with some Dijon mustard, garlic powder and onion powder. Dip skinless, boneless chicken tenders in the mixture and then coat with almond flour, thyme, paprika and salt. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes or until no longer pink, flipping once halfway through. Turn on the broiler for the last couple of minutes to make it nice and crispy.

• Temptation #4: Sliders. Despite their petite package, enjoy a couple sliders and you’ll have taken in more than 1,000 calories. At-Home Version: 1) Use lean, ground turkey to create petite patties and grill them with minimal oil. 2) Instead of the carbohydrate-filled bun, use large pieces of butter lettuce to wrap around your patties. Add sliced tomato, low fat cheese and grilled onion and secure the whole thing with a toothpick. • Temptation #5: Pasta The 1,000+ calories found in the noodles quickly end up stored on your body as fat. At-Home Version: 1) Bake a spaghetti squash until tender, then scoop out the soft, angel hair-like strands and top with your healthy pasta sauce. 2) Using a vegetable peeler, create long strips of zucchini and top with your healthy pasta sauce. ** Email monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com for a special homemade, low-fat, full taste alfredo recipe.

Earth Day, April 22nd, each year marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.” “It was a gamble,” he recalls, “but it worked.” At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22nd, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator and his youthful staff, organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife, suddenly realized they shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts. Sen. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to civilians in the United States for his role as Earth Day founder. As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting the status of environmental issues on to the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. As the millennium approached, Hayes agreed to spearhead another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy. Earth Day 2000 combined the big-picture feistiness of the first Earth Day with the international grassroots activism of Earth

281-617-2231 Day 1990. For 2000, Earth Day had the Internet to help link activists around the world. By the time Earth Day rolled around, 5,000 environmental groups around the world were on board, reaching out to hundreds of millions of people in a record 184 countries. Events varied: A talking drum chain traveled from village to village in Gabon, Africa, for example, while hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., USA. Earth Day 2000 sent the message loud and clear that citizens the world ‘round wanted quick and decisive action on clean energy. Now, the fight for a clean environment continues. We invite you to be a part of this history and a part of Earth Day. Discover energy you didn’t even know you had. Feel it rumble through the grass roots under your feet and the technology at your fingertips. Channel it into building a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come. www.earthday.net

KATY ISD OUTPERFORMS STATE ON STAAR TEST Test scores released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) from the 2012 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) accountability test for grades 3-8 show that Katy ISD outperformed the state in every grade level assessment. The district also exceeded the state passing rate by an average of 13 points. “While we are very pleased that our students outperformed the state, that is not our only goal,” says Katy ISD Superintendent, Alton Frailey. “While we will remain competitive with our peer districts within the state accountability system, our primary objective is to provide each student high quality and comprehensive learning experiences.” The STAAR test assesses student performance based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning objectives developed by the TEA. Because students took the STAAR test for the first time in 2012, test scores will not count in any way toward a student’s 2012 - 2013 state testing results, regardless if they passed or failed the test. The TEA is currently in the process of developing a new accountability system for the 2013 - 2014 school year. Additionally, the TEA will not be assigning accreditation status to school districts in 2012 - 2013. During the next two weeks, parents will receive their child’s Confidential Student Report, which provides a summary of how their child performed. Because the STAAR assessments are new and more rigorous than past TAKS assessments, many parents may see test scores that differ from previous TAKS test results.

“The change in scores is not a reflection of the education that students receive as we continue to provide high-quality instruction that students and parents expect in Katy ISD,” says Katy ISD’s Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Christine Caskey. “Not only is STAAR more rigorous than TAKS, this was the first time students saw the format of the new test. As students and teachers become more familiar with STAAR, we anticipate that future scores will improve.” Students who participate in the 2013 spring administration of STAAR will receive a new Confidential Student Report near the end of the 2013 school year. The 2013 spring administration of the STAAR will be the first set of test results that will count toward a student’s state testing performance.
TOMPKINS HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL MASCOT The administration at Obra D. Tompkins High School has officially announced that the mascot for the school will be the Falcons. Immediately after the Board of Trustees named the new high school, campus administration started the mascot recommendation process, inviting input from students, staff, parents and the Tompkins HS community. After all names were submitted, Principal Mark Grisdale and staff members met with members of the incoming student body to discuss and vote on the top recommendations, ultimately revealing the winning mascot name. “It was great to have the Katy ISD community involved in our selection process,” says Grisdale. “The campus is now working with the Katy ISD department of communications to develop an official logo.” The Tompkins High School colors are crimson, navy blue and white. For more information visit the Tompkins High School webpage.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.
April 2013
Pin Oak Village
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

CELEBRATE THE “BAT MITZVAH” OF CONGREGATION OR AMI APRIL 28, 2013 During 2013, Congregation Or Ami, a conservative synagogue serving West Houston, Katy and Fort Bend County, will be celebrating its 12th birthday. As is customary for Jewish girls of this age, this means it’s time to have a Bat Mitzvah party! Our celebration will be held at Congregation Or Ami - 3443 Wilcrest Drive (between Richmond and Westpark) - on Sunday evening, April 28th starting at 5 pm. Festivities will include a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music and dancing and a silent auction. Elks Gulf Coast Charity Ball Raises Funds to Assist Texas Special Needs Children Amid Mardi Gras festivities, delicious steaks and chicken provided by Outback, “to die for” bread pudding from “Babin’s Seaford House” and “Katy Cajun” plus the amazing music of “The Green Onions,” the Gulf Coast Elks crowned yet another District Sweetheart. The Elks Sweetheart Program involves each lodge selecting a Sweetheart to raise funds for the Texas State Project - special needs children. Each year at this time, a District Charity Ball is held to celebrate the successes and show appreciation for the hard work of our lodge sweethearts with the one with the most money being honored as Gulf Coast District Sweetheart. Those representing the various lodges were: Catherine Bulliner, Clearlake; Carol Marek, El Campo; Connie Claypool, Galveston; Al Olmos, Houston; Dorris Conley, Katy and Sandra Black, Pearland. After all totals were reported and tabulated, Catherine Bulliner of Clearlake was 3rd, Al Olmos of Houston was 2nd and Dorris Conley of Katy was crowned District Sweetheart. The next step for the District Sweetheart is to add to district funds through additional fund raising involving all district lodges. The state winner will be announced at the Texas Elks State Association convention in Addison in June. The Gulf Coast District holds claim to 10 state wins out of the 34 years one has been crowned. This is with 9 districts competing. Funds raised through this program provide summer camp at Texas Elk Camp located at Ottine, between Lulling and Gonzales, as well as needed equipment that insurance doesn’t cover and parents can’t afford. There are seven sessions of camp that host approximately 35-45 special needs students each session. Children are considered on a first come basis and the camp is at no cost to families. Contact your local Elks Lodge for details and applications or check online at www.texaselkscamp.org for applications. Texas Elks Camp motto, “Teaching that having a difference doesn’t make a difference.”
