Greater Houston Pool Management, Inc. COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER SPRING 2013
The Greater Houston Pool Management, Inc. Team would like to welcome you to the 2013 swim season. We sincerely look forward to serving you and your guests throughout this summer! We are pleased to provide an on-call person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year that can take care of any emergency that may arise. Residents may also contact us through our website, www. greaterhoustonpool.com, to take advantage of a variety of services including anonymous contact forms, details about their child’s summer job, on-line registration for community CPR or First Aid classes, Babysitting courses, as well as company news and highlights. Finally, please allow us to start the swim season off on a positive note by offering some valuable safety reminders. With your support we are confident that the 2013 swim season will be a safe and fun experience for all. • Parents must closely supervise their children at all times. Remember, it only takes seconds for a child to drown. • Remember that there are several different types of people who like to use the pool throughout the summer. Whether young or old, recreational or competitive, everyone wants to have a good time. • The safety of the children in the baby pool is the parents/guardians responsibility. The lifeguards will always enforce the pool rules throughout the facility, but children who cannot swim must have an adult within arms reach at all times. The same rule applies even if the child is wearing a floatation device. • Define a safe zone for your children where they can always touch the bottom. One of the most common saves a lifeguard must make is when a swimmer strays to an area that is too deep for them to stand. • Do not dive in areas marked “NO DIVING.” Nearly 90 percent of all spinal injuries occur in the shallow end of the pool. • Keep children from playing with or around the main drain. The main drain suction can be very powerful. • Breath-holding games can be very dangerous and may cause cardiac arrhythmia or seizures. Games like who can hold their breath the longest and swimming the longest distance underwater should be avoided at all times. • Access rules to the facility will be strictly enforced and is the responsibility of each member to understand and follow the rules as set forth by your Association. It is a very awkward and uncomfortable situation for everyone when a lifeguard must ask a member to go back home to get the appropriate access tag. If you should ever have a question about the pool rules, just ask a lifeguard or manager. It is better to be safe than sorry! We look forward to a safe, fun-filled summer in 2013. Until then we will be maintaining your facilities though the winter months and working hard preparing to serve your beautiful community for many years to come. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Do you have a professional service or product that the Homeowners’ Association can utilize for community improvements? If so, please let us know what you have to offer and we will do our best to use your business for future improvements to our neighborhood when needed. We would rather the money from the annual dues go to benefit our own neighbors when possible, rather than using an outside business or vendor. We’ll also be happy to publicize your business on our community Facebook page.
Be Aware of Theft Potential
Many of us have a habit of leaving the garage door open when we are working or relaxing in the backyard. Unfortunately, people in virtually every neighborhood lose property to opportunistic thieves this way every year. Bicycles and power tools are just a few of the commonly stolen things and keep in mind that it only takes a matter of seconds for something of significant value to “walk away.” Please keep those doors down when you are not in eyesight of the garage.
Find us on Facebook! Like Bear Creek Plantation Homeowners!
Harris County LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Bear Creek Plantation
281-859-5637
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
Interested in Recycling?
You can drop off paper products at any of the area schools using the Abitibi green and yellow bins. You can also recycle cardboard, tin, aluminum and plastic products at the alternative school on Rebel Yell, just west of Greenhouse. There are two different IMGreen Recycling bins located there. They are the bright green ones and one is for paper and cardboard and the other is for plastic, tin and aluminum. If you drop off recyclables there, please have them bagged up and use the stickers located near the cans, so the school can receive the funds.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Barking Dogs
While it is true that dogs are born to bark, they were not born to bark all day and night, driving your neighbors crazy. If you have a dog that must stay outside, please do what you can to limit the disturbance to your neighbors. You can find loads of information about how to control it at www.barkingdogs.net If you are one of the neighbors suffering from the seemingly endless noise of a neighbor’s barking dog, we hope that you will be able to speak with the owner about it. In many cases, the neighbor is unaware of the situation because, for one reason, they are away during the day. If the owner is unwilling or unable to do anything about it, you can call animal control at 281-999-3191 and have them do a check on the dog for possible neglect and abuse. (They won’t always come out for the barking alone.) The Sheriff’s Dept generally cannot do anything about it and they encourage you to call animal control as well. You

Scoop your pet’s poop
Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.

April - No Holidays/Early Dismissals
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINDENDANT
February 15, 2013 Dear Friends: As the 83rd Texas Legislature entered its sixth week of session, I traveled to Austin to attend two important hearings that will impact the future of CFISD students and teachers. I attended both the Senate Education Committee and House Committee on Public Education hearings and walked out of both meetings with an optimistic outlook for positive change in public education. Chaired by local Sen. Dan Patrick, the Senate Education Committee hearing focused on SB 3, a graduation plan bill authored by Sen. Patrick. If passed, this bill will create a new foundation program for high school graduation comprised of 11.5 elective credits and 14.5 specified credits. Additionally, students can earn endorsements in one of four areas (business/industry, arts/humanities, STEM or “distinguished” by completing further requirements). The goal of SB 3 is to better prepare students for post-secondary opportunities in light of the changing economic and business needs. A panel of superintendents did an excellent job reinforcing flexible academic plans for all students. The House Committee on Public Education, chaired by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, held its first meeting February 13th. This initial hearing included testimony by Education Commissioner Michael Williams, who provided information on key priorities -maintaining high expectations amid successful results, the importance of the 4x4 graduation plan and closing the achievement gap. The next day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock at the Texas School Alliance meeting, where I and other superintendents discussed our hopes for the 83rd session. The tone of this meeting matched the positive feel of both hearings. While we know that the legislative climate can change on a whim, we are optimistic that during this session meaningful change will occur in the areas of high school graduation programs, high-stakes testing and the accountability system. I look forward to more trips to the State Capitol throughout this session to ensure that CFISD’s interests are protected and to communicating our progress back to you. Sincerely,
Learn Day or Night.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
