Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. The Fill-the-Boot campaign takes place throughout the United States annually and has been raising money for families served by MDA for more than 50 years. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. This show rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning July 16th. Performances for Steel Magnolias will be the last week of Aug. Dance classes will also be offered this summer. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and before-and-after care for working parents. Every 3-week performance camp culminates in 4 performances. Each parent will receive 2 free tickets to a performance of their choice. Additional tickets can be purchased at $10 per person for shows featuring grades 1-6 performers. Prices for the teen performances are either $12 or $15 depending on the venue. All 3-week camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a camp t-shirt, costumes and other needed materials. Each one-week camp has a performance showcase for family and friends on the final day of camp. Parents receive two free tickets and additional tickets are only $5. For more information, please call the HFAC Actors Academy at 281-685-2623.

CY-LAKES HIGH SCHOOL CHOSEN BY TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY FOR WORK WITH PROJECT SHARE At the beginning of the spring semester, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) filmed teachers and students at Cy-Lakes High School to feature the school’s extraordinary implementation of Project Share Texas. Project Share is a global online learning community where educators collaborate, share resources and showcase accomplishments. It is a collection of Web 2.0 tools and applications that provides high quality professional development in an interactive and engaging learning environment. Cy-Lakes High School was selected by the TEA as the only comprehensive high school to fully implement Project Share during the pilot period. Librarian Janice McNeil states, “We added 100% of our faculty and students at the very start, which provided both opportunities and challenges. We were able to train the entire staff to the same platform over a very short period by using our department and team structure.” Two Cy-Lakes teachers featured in the filming by TEA are Cynthia Harrison and Julie Pitt, both of whom have worked diligently to implement Project Share in the history department. In addition to giving teachers an interactive platform, students benefit from Project Share in numerous ways. Thomas Serrano, Cy-Lakes student, says,

Parking on the Street
The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.
Running a Business from your Home
The Association has become aware of some homeowners running a business from their home. Please note that the Berkshire community is a “single family” home community and running a business from your home is strictly prohibited. These homes are being monitored by our contracted Harris County Sheriff, as well as our property manager. Be advised that the Board of Directors will take all measures, including legal action, to see that this practice is stopped.

Loose Dogs
To report loose dogs please contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191.
Notice to Pet Owners
We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community.
Trashcans
We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.
Flat Curbs
Please be advised that tennis courts are to be used for playing tennis only. A tennis court key is required to enter the tennis courts and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone found to be in the tennis courts for reasons other than playing tennis will be immediately reported as trespassing.
Trashcans MUST be stored out of public view except on days of trash pick up. Also, please remember to remove trashcans from the curb in a timely manner after trash pick up.
Please refrain from parking vehicles on the flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs eventually cause damage and deterioration. Further note that storage of vehicles on streets or within road right-of-way is specifically prohibited.
