COMPARING APPLES & ORANGES A seller pricing his home based upon sales information found on the Internet may be comparing apples and oranges because important details are missing. Deferred maintenance, need for updating, finishes, the lack or existence of amenities like large closets, a swimming pool, and topof-the-line appliances – all affect a home’s intrinsic value. And in today’s rapidly changing market, even yesterday’s comparable sale may be outdated. Properties must be evaluated on their merits by a Realtor who knows the neighborhood and can separate the apples from the oranges. Call me at 713.578.0571 and I’ll help you determine the value of your home.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

IMPORTANT DATES April - No Holidays/Early Dismissals

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINDENDANT

February 15, 2013 Dear Friends: As the 83rd Texas Legislature entered its sixth week of session, I traveled to Austin to attend two important hearings that will impact the future of CFISD students and teachers. I attended both the Senate Education Committee and House Committee on Public Education hearings and walked out of both meetings with an optimistic outlook for positive change in public education. Chaired by local Sen. Dan Patrick, the Senate Education Committee hearing focused on SB 3, a graduation plan bill authored by Sen. Patrick. If passed, this bill will create a new foundation program for high school graduation comprised of 11.5 elective credits and 14.5 specified credits. Additionally, students can earn endorsements in one of four areas (business/industry, arts/ humanities, STEM or “distinguished” by completing further requirements). The goal of SB 3 is to better prepare students for post-secondary opportunities in light of the changing economic and business needs. A panel of superintendents did an excellent job reinforcing flexible academic plans for all students. The House Committee on Public Education, chaired by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, held its first meeting February 13th. This initial hearing included testimony by Education Commissioner Michael Williams, who provided

information on key priorities -maintaining high expectations amid successful results, the importance of the 4x4 graduation plan and closing the achievement gap. The next day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock at the Texas School Alliance meeting, where I and other superintendents discussed our hopes for the 83rd session. The tone of this meeting matched the positive feel of both hearings. While we know that the legislative climate can change on a whim, we are optimistic that during this session meaningful change will occur in the areas of high school graduation programs, high-stakes testing and the accountability system. I look forward to more trips to the State Capitol throughout this session to ensure that CFISD’s interests are protected and to communicating our progress back to you. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D.

SUMMER SCHOOL DATES

CFISD announced the 2013 summer school dates for elementary, middle school and high school. Summer school programs will be held between June 17 - Aug. 8, 2013. Schools will not be in session on Fridays or July 4th - 5th.

SAVING THE PRAIRIE

Eleventh grade art student Kitt Kroeger presents CFISD Science Resource Center Manager, Alice Flood, with two tarps she painted depicting summer and winter scenes on the Katy Prairie. The tarps serve as backdrops in a new exhibit at the center encouraging CFISD second graders to learn and care about the most imperiled ecosystem on the planet. Once covering much of the Houston-Galveston area, the coastal prairie is now threatened by encroaching development. Hosting over 1,000 species of animals (including insects), the dwindling grassland is rich in biological, cultural and economic significance. Created to foster a new generation of prairie conservationists, the Katy Prairie Conservancy has been promoting awareness, education

A FAVORITE EVENT: SWENKE WINTER WONDERLAND

Recently, Cypress Ranch High School Key Club volunteered at a local elementary school helping out with their Winter Wonderland celebration. This is Swenke’s fourth annual Winter Wonderland and Cypress Ranch has been lucky enough to be involved with it each year. There were about 75 students working in 2 different shifts to help make the day a success. Key Clubbers helped out in the cakewalk, bookwalk and many outdoor games and activities, including face painting and hairspray booths. Some worked with teachers and adult volunteers in the silent auction that serves as a fundraiser for the school. There were even some kids that got to work at the snow booth, supervising children and playing in the artificial snow that was shipped in for the event. Another group of volunteers came the night before the celebration and helped decorate and set up.

Sophomore Devon Grady, who worked at a booth that gave away candy and prizes, said “I loved getting to talk to all the cute elementary school kids and seeing them so happy when I gave them a prize.” She also said she would definitely volunteer at the event next year if she could. It does take a special kind of person to be enthusiastic and willing to listen when working with children and the Cypress Ranch Key Club members at the event displayed those qualities. For more information about Cypress Ranch Key Club or if you need volunteers for an event in the community, contact club sponsors Jennifer Hydes (jennifer.hydes@cfisd.net) or Katie Lauver (katie.lauver@cfisd.net).

Volunteer Opportunities Cypress Assistance Ministries Volunteers Needed

When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
