April 2013 Message from your HOA President
Greetings One and All,
It is April and almost time for our annual elections. As I stated last month, there are two board positions up for election. Anyone wishing to run in the elections should contact Mike Crahan as soon as possible. I would like to see as many people as possible attend the meeting on the April 24th. If you cannot attend in person, you have other options to vote including giving your proxy to someone who will attend or voting electronically. During the February Board meeting, we made several decisions on upgrades to the neighborhood. We selected the tiles for resurfacing the Cypress Mill Park pool and the resurfacing of the Cypresswood pool deck. We are ordering new concrete tables for the Cypresswood pool similar to the tables on the patio at the Recreation Center. These updates should be in place before pool season. We also selected new playground equipment for the park at the Cypresswood pool and approved to have the play area resurfaced with the same artificial turf used at the Cypress Mill Park playground. We are also looking to do updates to the weight room including new equipment. If I do not run or if I am not re-elected, I want you to know that I have enjoyed my time as President of your HOA. I think this board has done a lot of great work and I hope that the next board can be as successful. Take care and God Bless, Dennis R. Brewer President, Cypress Mill HOA

Principle Management Group is doing an outstanding job in Cypress Mill Subdivision
I want to give credit where and when is due and for sure I am incredibly impressed with the improvements done in our subdivision. I have lived in Cypress Mills since 1997 when the homes were new, things were well kept, homeowners were proud of their home and the subdivision was well kept. Over the next few years things changed, houses became vacant, yards were unkempt, the grounds in the subdivision was not taken care of and the fence around the subdivision was falling apart and in need of replacing. I was embarrassed to tell people where I lived and I NEVER invited family or friends over. We wanted to move but knew it would be a problem selling our home due to the condition of the subdivision, so instead I became a chronic complainer,

A Cypress Mill resident ** Editor’s Note: Improvements in Cypress Mill over the past few years were instigated and approved by your HOA Board of Directors who worked diligently with the PMG Community Manager to attain the desired results. It should be noted that the Cypress Rosehill fence project came about after close negotiations and cooperation between the HOA Board and the MUD and the MUD should certainly get credit for their efforts.

calling the management company about my displeasure with the condition of the subdivision and how it was starting to look like a low income, high crime area. I must say what a difference a couple of years and a good property management company make. The area is looking so beautiful - from the new fence, landscapes or to the wonderful renovation done at the recreational center. By the way, I am pleased with the innovative thinking of installing cameras and requiring a card to get in the beautiful new restrooms, this should be a deterrent for bored teens to misbehave.

Attention Pet Owners
As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.

Trash/recycling Collection Bins
On windy days, please be sure to secure your recycling items in the red recycling bins so that we don’t have pizza boxes, paper bags, milk containers, etc. strewn across the neighborhood. We have had some high winds recently and blown trash has become quite an issue.

Trash Pickup
Please remember that there is no trash pickup on public holidays. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. If the weather is particularly windy and you are setting your trash cans out on the previous evening, make sure that the items inside are secure. Nobody wants to be picking up their neighbor’s trash because the wind has blown the contents out of the bin.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.

FoundationsAcademy.com Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

February 15, 2013 Dear Friends: As the 83rd Texas Legislature entered its sixth week of session, I traveled to Austin to attend two important hearings that will impact the future of CFISD students and teachers. I attended both the Senate Education Committee and House Committee on Public Education hearings and walked out of both meetings with an optimistic outlook for positive change in public education. Chaired by local Sen. Dan Patrick, the Senate Education Committee hearing focused on SB 3, a graduation plan bill authored by Sen. Patrick. If passed, this bill will create a new foundation program for high school graduation comprised of 11.5 elective credits and 14.5 specified credits. Additionally, students can earn endorsements in one of four areas (business/industry, arts/ humanities, STEM or “distinguished” by completing further requirements). The goal of SB 3 is to better prepare students for post-secondary opportunities in light of the changing economic and business needs. A panel of superintendents did an excellent job reinforcing flexible academic plans for all students. The House Committee on Public Education, chaired by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, held its first meeting February 13th. This initial hearing included testimony by Education Commissioner Michael Williams, who provided information on key priorities -maintaining high expectations amid successful results, the importance of the 4x4 graduation plan and closing the achievement gap.

The next day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock at the Texas School Alliance meeting, where I and other superintendents discussed our hopes for the 83rd session. The tone of this meeting matched the positive feel of both hearings. While we know that the legislative climate can change on a whim, we are optimistic that during this session meaningful change will occur in the areas of high school graduation programs, high-stakes testing and the accountability system. I look forward to more trips to the State Capitol throughout this session to ensure that CFISD’s interests are protected and to communicating our progress back to you. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D.
SUMMER SCHOOL DATES
CFISD announced the 2013 summer school dates for elementary, middle school and high school. Summer school programs will be held between June 17 - Aug. 8, 2013. Schools will not be in session on Fridays or July 4th - 5th.
SAVING THE PRAIRIE
Eleventh grade art student Kitt Kroeger presents CFISD Science Resource Center Manager, Alice Flood, with two tarps she painted depicting summer and winter scenes on the Katy Prairie. The tarps serve as backdrops in a new exhibit at the center encouraging CFISD second graders to learn and care about the most imperiled ecosystem on the planet. Once covering much of the Houston-Galveston area, the coastal prairie is now threatened by encroaching development. Hosting over 1,000 species of animals (including insects), the dwindling grassland is rich in biological, cultural and economic significance. Created to foster a new generation of prairie conservationists, the Katy Prairie Conservancy has been promoting awareness, education and advocacy among both schoolchildren and the citizenry in hopes that they will engage in volunteer restoration efforts to save the prairie. If you would like to join the effort, please contact Jaime Gonzalez, KPC Community Education Director at 281-660-6683 or jgonzalez@katyprairie.org
