Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. The Fill-the-Boot campaign takes place throughout the United States annually and has been raising money for families served by MDA for more than 50 years. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

The Alpha Charity League is a non-profit, mother/son service league. ACL’s mission is “Fostering mother and son relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service and leadership development.” Our members’ common value is that we want to continue to be involved in a meaningful way in our son’s life and share our value of the importance of community service. Members enter during their 7th grade year in an open enrollment process. Any openings in the 8th grade class will be filled on a “first come, first serve” basis. ACL started in February 2010 with members from area private and public middle schools that feed into the two primary high schools in the Memorial area. Our 160 members (7th and 8th grade boys and their Moms) performed 1,300+ hours of community service and had a ball! We work with charities that the boys introduced to the League and have developed long-term, in-depth relationships with them so we can continue to interact with our approved Charities in a very meaningful way. ACL currently has 800+ members in the Memorial, Katy, Tomball/ The Woodlands, Copperfield and San Antonio Chapters.

WHEN TO FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN This is the magic question asked each year: when should I fertilize my lawn. The typical answer will be: • Early spring - once, February through April • Late spring - once, April through June • Summer - once, June through August • Fall - once, September through November The easiest way to remember your lawn fertilizing schedule, is to fertilize around four major holidays: • Easter (or mid-March) • Fourth of July • Labor Day • Christmas

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - DINING OUT TIP The temptations of eating so-called “healthy” favorites are so easy to give into when at restaurants. Thanks to Grand Lakes’ resident, Kelly G., we have a great list of “tempting foods” and also the at-home versions of some of your restaurant favorites. Thank you, Kelly! • Temptation #1: Cobb Salad; are loaded with cheese, bacon, egg and topped with a creamy dressing. At-Home Version: Use dark lettuce, like spinach or arugula, to get the most nutritional value. Top it with hard-boiled egg whites, baked turkey bacon, light cheese, avocado and drizzle lemon juice and vinegar for dressing. • Temptation Food #2: Spinach Artichoke Dip; just half a cup of this creamy dip will set you back about 350 calories. At-Home Version: Use low-fat milk, spinach, some olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. • Temptation #3: Chicken Tenders. This is basically fried chicken. Enough said. At-Home Version: Whip up a few eggs with some Dijon mustard, garlic powder and onion powder. Dip skinless, boneless

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.

Deerfield Village April 2013

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.

ELECTRICIAN 5 Year Warranty*

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

CY-LAKES HIGH SCHOOL CHOSEN BY TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY FOR WORK WITH PROJECT SHARE At the beginning of the spring semester, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) filmed teachers and students at Cy-Lakes High School to feature the school’s extraordinary implementation of Project Share Texas. Project Share is a global online learning community where educators collaborate, share resources and showcase accomplishments. It is a collection of Web 2.0 tools and applications that provides high quality professional development in an interactive and engaging learning environment. Cy-Lakes High School was selected by the TEA as the only comprehensive high school to fully implement Project Share during the pilot period. Librarian Janice McNeil states, “We added 100% of our faculty and students at the very start, which provided both opportunities and challenges. We were able to train the entire staff to the same platform over a very short period by using our department and team structure.” Two Cy-Lakes teachers featured in the filming by TEA are Cynthia Harrison and Julie Pitt, both of whom have worked diligently to implement Project Share in the history department. In addition to giving teachers an interactive platform, students benefit from Project Share in numerous ways. Thomas Serrano, Cy-Lakes student, says,

“Each of our Project Share courses can be easily accessed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, making completing assignments very convenient for a busy high school student.” Another student, Briana Nguyen, states, “Our Dual Credit teachers all post their syllabus and weekly assignments so we always have access to them. Project Share has helped me with organizing my assignments and events and has kept me on track throughout high school.” The final video production from TEA is located on the Internet at

The Adoptable Dog of the Month Lily, a German Shepherd mix, was surrendered to BARC, the Houston city shelter, because her owners had “two many.” She was very thin, had just had a litter of pups and was high heartworm positive and was going to be euthanized at the shelter. Her owners kept the puppies, but dumped poor ol’ mom at the shelter to die. She has filled out beautifully and been treated for the heartworms. She is now ready to find a home of her own.

Lily loves people and loves attention. Her favorite way of showing her love is to hug you and give you a kiss or two or three! Everyone that meets her loves her. She is probably too interested in cats and even though she is learning about cats, life would probably be simpler if she went to a home without cats and very small dogs. Lily is a very smart dog, which is helpful with training, but she is so smart she can open gates and needs a secure backyard with a locked gate and tall fence. She is very loving and likes spending time with her people. People with Shepherd experience will probably understand her needs more than those who have not known Shepherds. She is close to 60 lbs., could probably still stand to gain another 5 lbs., she is up-to-date on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. She is crate trained and is most likely housebroken. She is looking to join a family and she will be very loyal to her person or family. Seems to be fine with children, older children would probably be best. If you would like to meet Lily or find out more about her, please contact Cindi at cindi.hohle@c-a-m.com or Anke at ankearnold@att.net

Deerfield Village Pet Hot Line Marie Nugent 281-859-1104

One very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet, they can scan the chip and find the owner, just remember to change the info on it if need be. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it?” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and let you know your pet has been found and if necessary, bring your pet to you.
