Timely Tip for April Gardeners
The weather is warmer and the days are getting a little longer. It’s time to get outside and prepare your garden and lawns for spring. Enjoy a weed-free lawn by applying a pre-emergent to prevent summer broadleaf and grassy weeds. Add a little natural inspiration to your home by creating colorful container gardens. Simply select an appropriate-sized container, choose a well-blended potting soil, secure plants with similar light and watering requirements, plant them, decorate with mulch and enjoy! For those of you who choose to garden with a purpose, start your own vegetable and herb garden today for summer harvesting. Vegetable and herb gardens are aesthetically-appealing and fragrant. You and your family can enjoy the fruits of your labor for months and years to come! Celebrate Earth Day this month and go “green.” A successful garden begins with good soil. Organic material is important to the soil composition. It helps with

drainage and increases the soil microbe population. Expanded shale is used to break up hard, compacted clay soils. Applying molasses will help stimulate microorganisms and energize your plants. Top dress your flowerbeds and containers with organic mulches. They not only break down slowly putting organic material back into the soil, but they also prevent weeds, conserve moisture and cool the soil during the heat of the summer. There are products that are safe to use around pets and children. There are also beneficial insects available such as Ladybugs, Lacewings and Beneficial Nematodes! These guys will attack the pests and take care of them “naturally.” Submitted by: Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery
Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins 14th Season
The Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins Swim Team will begin their 14th season in 2013! We are again recruiting enthusiastic swimmers ages 5 to 18 looking to have great fun this spring and summer. (Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool by the end of the second week of practice.) We have three returning coaches and one new coach this season. Meagan Wien will return as Head Coach. Elizabeth Allen will assist for the first few weeks of practice. Audrey Vinall returns as an Assistant Coach and our new coach is Nick Carroll. LOEST is a voluntary recreational swim team operated for Lakes on Eldridge and the surrounding neighborhoods. LOEST encourages a competitive swim team environment and provides the opportunity for growth, training, enjoyment, good sportsmanship and participation to all active team members. LOEST cannot function without parent involvement, so each participating family is required to fulfill a volunteer commitment. It’s a great way to meet other families and adults in our community! Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study
Due to the fire at our Beach Club on Christmas night, the Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study moved to the activity center at Lakes on Eldridge North. We so appreciate their kindness and generosity in letting us share their facility on the same day and same hour as we had before the fire. Our new study focuses on Becoming A Woman Who Listens To God in a 16 week study by Sharon Jaynes. The author of this study, addresses How God still speaks to us today, identifies whose voice we hear, suggests barriers that block our hearing and remedies for learning to listen and hear when and what God speaks to us. Please join us every Tuesday morning from 9:15 AM to 12:00 Noon for fellowship, praise, study and prayer. Study guide books are available at the meetings and cost $13. The Lakes On Eldridge North is located at Tanner Rd. and Lakes On Eldridge North, between North Eldridge Parkway and Brittmoore Roads. Enter through the visitor’s gate on Tanner Rd. and give your name to the guard. Then, continue to the stop sign and turn left on Catalina Shores then continue until you see the activity center on your right. SWANS CAN BE DANGEROUS
This time of the year, Mother Nature provides our LOE swans with some common sense. It is mating, nesting, then egg-laying season and they feel the need to protect their territory against predators including humans, dogs and other waterfowl. Most of the swans in our neighborhood are not old enough to mate but some will go through the motions of even building a nest. The pairs of swans that are old enough to produce young (cygnets) are normally gentle and can be fed while posing no threat. However, our males (cobs) will become aggressive and territorial in trying to protect their mate and their nest. This is usually temporary until mating season is over. If you are walking past a lake and a swan swims to your side and follows you, BEWARE! If you see a swan with his neck back and feathers up such as the one in the picture, please stay away, do not attempt to feed him and walk on the other side of the street as he is in ATTACK position. Please warn your nannies and sitters not to stroll babies around the swans. We must try to remember that the swans are protecting their territory and readying it for their young. To antagonize, tease, throw objects at or injure the swans is a felony and we need to be as cautious of them as they are to us. Thank you for your cooperation.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. • When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound 2. Harris County Animal Control 3. Houston SPCA 4. Houston Humane Society 5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection Or check the following breed specific rescue organizations: www.petfinder.com www.adoptapet.com www.houstonpettalk.com/resources/rescue-groups/ We will also feature a dog in need as “The Adoptable Dog of the Month” in our Lakes on Eldridge newsletter in every issue. For any questions contact the Pet Safety Committee at www.lakesoneldridge. net or through i-neighbors.org

meets her loves her. She is probably too interested in cats and even though she is learning about cats, life would probably be simpler if she went to to a home without cats and very small dogs. Lily is a very smart dog, which is helpful with training, but she is so smart she can open gates and needs a secure backyard with a locked gate and tall fence. She is very loving and likes spending time with her people. People with Shepherd experience will probably understand her needs more than those who have not known Shepherds. She is close to 60 lbs., could probably still stand to gain another 5 lbs., she is up-to-date on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. She is crate trained and is most likely housebroken. She is looking to join a family and she will be very loyal to her person or family. Seems to be fine with children, older children would probably be best. If you would like to meet Lily or find out more about her, please contact Cindi at cindi.hohle@c-a-m.com or Anke at ankearnold@att. net
Play a string instrument?
The Adoptable Dog of the Month
Lily, a German Shepherd mix, was surrendered to BARC, the Houston city shelter, because her owners had “two many.” She was very thin, had just had a litter of pups and was high heartworm positive and was going to be euthanized at the shelter. Her owners kept the puppies, but dumped poor ol’ mom at the shelter to die. She has filled out beautifully and been treated for the heartworms. She is now ready to find a home of her own.
A LOE resident, who plays violin and viola, is looking for other string players to play quartet music, on a recreational level. Email: echavlik@earthlink.net or call Ellen at 281-741-1781.
Lily loves people and loves attention. Her favorite way of showing her love is to hug you and give you a kiss or two or three! Everyone that

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINDENDANT
February 15, 2013 Dear Friends: As the 83rd Texas Legislature entered its sixth week of session, I traveled to Austin to attend two important hearings that will impact the future of CFISD students and teachers. I attended both the Senate Education Committee and House Committee on Public Education hearings and walked out of both meetings with an optimistic outlook for positive change in public education. Chaired by local Sen. Dan Patrick, the Senate Education Committee hearing focused on SB 3, a graduation plan bill authored by Sen. Patrick. If passed, this bill will create a new foundation program for high school graduation comprised of 11.5 elective credits and 14.5 specified credits. Additionally, students can earn endorsements in one of four areas (business/industry, arts/humanities, STEM or “distinguished” by completing further requirements). The goal of SB 3 is to better prepare students for post-secondary opportunities in light of the changing economic and business needs. A panel of superintendents did an excellent job reinforcing flexible academic plans for all students. The House Committee on Public Education, chaired by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, held its first meeting February 13th. This initial hearing included testimony by Education Commissioner Michael Williams, who provided information on key priorities -maintaining high expectations amid successful results, the importance of the 4x4 graduation plan and closing the achievement gap. The next day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock at the Texas School Alliance meeting, where I and other superintendents discussed our hopes for the 83rd session. The tone of this meeting matched the positive feel of both hearings. While we know that the legislative climate can change on a whim, we are optimistic that during this session meaningful change will occur in the areas of high school graduation programs, high-stakes testing and the accountability system. I look forward to more trips to the State Capitol throughout this session to ensure that CFISD’s interests are protected and to communicating our progress back to you. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D.
SUMMER SCHOOL DATES
CFISD announced the 2013 summer school dates for elementary, middle school and high school. Summer school programs will be held between June 17 - Aug. 8, 2013. Schools will not be in session on Fridays or July 4th - 5th.

SAVING THE PRAIRIE
Eleventh grade art student Kitt Kroeger presents CFISD Science Resource Center Manager, Alice Flood, with two tarps she painted depicting summer and winter scenes on the Katy Prairie. The tarps serve as backdrops in a new exhibit at the center encouraging CFISD second graders to learn and care about the most imperiled ecosystem on the planet. Once covering much of the Houston-Galveston area, the coastal prairie is now threatened by encroaching development. Hosting over 1,000 species of animals (including insects), the dwindling grassland is rich in biological, cultural and economic significance. Created to foster a new generation of prairie conservationists, the Katy Prairie Conservancy has been promoting awareness, education and advocacy among both schoolchildren and the citizenry in hopes that they will engage in volunteer restoration efforts to save the prairie. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays.
