GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used. Parking in the Street
SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2013 ARE YOU READY TO REEL IN THE FISH AND THE FUN? This annual event is held the Saturday before Father’s Day at the lakes at Cinco Ranch. The tournament starts from sun up to 10:45 AM. Bring your fishing pole, bait, lawn chairs, cooler with snacks and a ruler to measure your big catch! Awards will be presented after the tournament for the biggest fish, most inches of fish caught, my first fish awards, annual team spirit award and so much more. Get ready for a day filled with family fun and make memories that will last forever! Last year’s event was the largest we have ever had. Come out and make this year’s event even better! All Cinco Ranch residents and their guests are welcome. For more information, visit our website at www.CincoRanchLife.org or call the Association Office at 281-599-0408.
OFFICE OF Phil Camus, Constable Precinct 5 HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS
While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

Street Parking Near the Schools
With the Katy ISD bus changes this year, many parents are dropping off and picking up their children at school. This means there are many more cars parked along the streets near the schools. Please be extra cautious in these areas and be alert to the parked cars and the children walking to and from the cars. Thank you.

Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time.

Help Avoid Power Outages In Your Neighborhood
Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA Harris County - LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street. While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com
Cinco Ranch II
Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW
Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road - Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us
PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE
When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis.
Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!
Tennis Reservation Cancelations
If you make tennis reservations and decide that you cannot play, please go online and cancel your reservations. This will ensure that the courts will be open for other residents to then reserve the courts. Thank you.
Postal Box Maintenance
To report Postal Boxes that are in disrepair or in need of replacement, please file a report with the Katy Post Office for your Zip Code area (77450 - 281-6470673; 77494 - 281-574-1401) or visit their website at www.usps.com/contactus
Sheriff’s Vacation Home Watch
Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.
If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home. Log into the site or call the office to give appropriate information. Make sure to cancel the watch when you return home. Fort Bend County Residents: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp Harris County Residents: Call 713-221-6000 and give home information.
Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses.
Going out of town? Contact your sheriff’s department to have them watch your home.

KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra,
8

were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

Guest speaker Marsue Ferguson, education and language consultant (specializing in teacher training), addressed the audience with comments about the five pillars of NHS - leadership, scholarship, service, character and citizenship. Mrs. Ferguson encouraged the new inductees to make the most of every opportunity to serve and lead others with honor. “Do well and be able to look back and say ‘I did some good’,” she said. Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. Some of those service activities included: Katy Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity orphanage in Vietnam for children with dioxin disease, St. Justin’s food bank and Houston Food Bank. After the ceremony, there was a congratulatory reception hosted by the current 20 members for new inductees and guests.

TROOP 584 CELEBRATES 50TH EAGLE SCOUT On January 15, 2013, Chris Mohindroo became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Troop 584 is under the leadership of Scoutmaster Mike McKenna. Kevin Devers serves as Troop Committee Chair, Frank Coselli as Troop 584 Unit Commissioner and Forrest Bjerkaas serves as Sam Houston Area Council West Division Commissioner. The troop was chartered under the leadership of its original Scoutmaster, Layne Scholl, on July 31, 2000, by The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch Church in Katy, TX. Earning Eagle Scout Rank is an extraordinary accomplishment, since the requirements are demanding and only 5% of Scouts reach that level. The fact that 50 young men from Troop 584 have done so is a testament to the strength of character of the dedicated men and women who lead and volunteer and to the persistence and perseverance of the parents and young men in this troop.

Troop 584 has been blessed with a very high level of parent volunteer participation. Each month during the school year, the troop goes on an outing where the boys learn camping skills and practice leadership and teamwork. David Hartt coordinates the troop outings, but the boys are required to plan, lead and conduct the activities on their own. The troop also participates in winter and summer camps, where the young men complete merit badge work and participate in swimming, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, sailing and snorkeling. Robert Miller and Debbie Vaughn have provided years of service certifying swimmers and coordinating merit badge classes. All this is accomplished by parents volunteering to give up their nights, weekends and vacations in order to serve during these events. Troop 584 participates in High Adventure Camps such as Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier. Four young men and an adult, Matthew Miller, Chris Mohindroo, Graham Burcaw, David Bjerkaas and Raj Mohindroo recently completed all three to earn the Triple Crown Award. The requirements for Eagle Scout are designed to prepare a young man to succeed in life and to know what to do in an emergency. Ken Guion provides safety training. A heavy emphasis is placed on serving God and country and on community service. Troop 584 has provided help with July 4th activities, charity fun runs, numerous church and religious events, KISD activities, KVPAC and other nonprofit events, disaster relief efforts, ramps for homes for the elderly and handicapped, collections for animal shelters and numerous ecology studies. Troop 584 is very diverse from a cultural and religious standpoint. Members come from several different countries and are Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim and Hindu. The outings have afforded the boys and their parents an opportunity to interact with and learn about, different cultures. With the world getting smaller and the economies becoming global, this troop offers an excellent opportunity for multicultural leadership training and experience.

Chris Mohindroo is a Junior at Taylor High School and is a member of Kingsland Baptist Church. He is the son of Raj and Jolene Mohindroo. His Eagle project involved planting trees at Willow River Farms, which is a home for handicapped adults. In addition to Mr. Scholl, Mr. McKenna and his Cub Scout leader, Mr. Mark Ridgaway, Chris wishes to thank his rank advancement leaders, Steve Slezak, Robert Daniels, Brackin Smith, Jack Hazel, Bruce and Marie Miglin, his Eagle Scoutmaster Conference members Forrest Bjerkaas, Zan May and Eric Stankus and the numerous Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Members and volunteers that helped him complete his journey to Eagle Scout. Chris plans to continue to lead in his troop and to serve God and his country throughout his life. We ask the citizens of Katy to join us in celebrating this remarkable troop accomplishment.

Gospel Quartet in Katy ~ Glory Bound
You don’t have to look far to find good Gospel music in the Katy area. For the past year, the men of Glory Bound have been singing and entertaining the crowds at various venues in and around Katy.
Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Their ministry is to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of metropolitan and suburban Houston through the uplifting message of gospel music. Their song list includes traditional, well-known hymns, as well as more recent offerings from contemporary recording quartets. Glory Bound features Bass John Voll, Tenor Bill Beck, Baritone Chip Feazel, High Tenor Jeff Dethrow and Tony Custer on the piano. They love sharing wonderful Christian music as it was first performed, with rich vocal harmonies and lively piano accompaniment. They are frequently seen and heard at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy. You can also find them singing for churches, shelters, retirement and assisted living centers, nursing homes and other venues where they can make a joyful noise. Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company
Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company proudly presents Ravenscroft, by Don Nigro, Thursday through Saturday and Monday, May 3-18, 2013 with a preview on Thursday, May 2nd. Directed by Rob Kimbro and starring Sean Patrick Judge, Michelle Edwards, Claire Anderson, Karen Schlag, Zoquera Millburne and Kara Ray. SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. You’ll never look at Agatha Christie quite the same way again… Paolo Alto Weekly Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price- $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.
Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Steve Radack will honor our servicemen and servicewomen with a Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The service will be held at the Harris County War Memorial in Bear Creek Pioneers Park, 3535 War Memorial Drive.
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.
The Harris County War Memorial displays the names of every resident of Harris County who lost his or her life defending our country in each of its six major conflicts: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq and the current conflicts in Afghanistan.
Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.
Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.
With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.
In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?
I feel like the horrific event is happening all over again. I have nightmares and flashbacks of the event. I stay away from crowded places that remind me of the event. I jump and feel very anxious when something happens without warning. I have a hard time trusting or feeling close to other people. I get mad very easily. I feel guilty because others have died and I lived. I have trouble sleeping and my muscles are tense. There are many characteristics that may be signs of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD). If you recognize some or all of these symptoms; you may want to seek help. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Group meeting at Memorial Drive UMC, 13194 Memorial Drive. Call 713-468-8356 x119 for fates and times.

Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.

National Charity League Lady Bird Chapter Honors Its Inaugural Graduating Seniors
The Lady Bird Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) proudly honors its graduating seniors at the chapter’s first annual Senior Presentation. The members, family and friends celebrated the accomplishments of each of the young ladies at a dinner and dance at the Falcon Point Country Club. The Lady Bird chapter is the newest National Charity League chapter in Katy, formed in 2010 and chartered in 2012. NCL encourages civic engagement, commitment to community service and leadership development, to cultivate future community and business leaders. The Lady Bird Chapter now supports 17 philanthropies with a special emphasis on children, working with charities such as Krause Center, Project Linus, Fort Bend County Women’s and Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Kids Connected, Operation Home Front, Sire and others. This new chapter has already positively impacted the community through more than 4,000 hours of community service this year, performed by the chapter’s mother/daughter teams. These three young ladies in the first graduating class of Lady Birds showcase the intelligent, artistic and most of all compassionate philanthropists they have become. The 2013 graduates, from three different Katy high schools were strangers when they joined the NCL Lady Bird Chapter, but became a cohesive team and best of all, good friends through their efforts in giving back to the community. Meredith Bunning (Seven Lakes), Sarah Dicken (Taylor) and Presley Taylor (Katy) have teamed together and excelled in their dedication and commitment to the Katy community, while inspiring the younger Lady Birds to make a difference in the world. The senior class, while small, has made a big impact. They have made blankets for sick children in local hospitals, hosted Christmas and birthday parties for homeless children, mentored troubled teens, helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity, visited hospitals - going room to room- to sing for the sick elderly patients and worked at food pantries and nursing homes. The seniors stated, “We may not be able to save lives, but we can bring comfort to others during a crisis in their lives, through our decisions to act. We choose to make a difference.” Congratulations NCL Lady Bird Class of 2013. You do make a difference.

VFW Remembers Operation Desert Storm
On the 22nd anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, VFW Post 9182 paused to remember. Before the Post’s monthly business meeting, Sr. Vice Commander Gary Drahos gave a very enlightening talk on this “Gulf War.”
Drahos, was a specialist in the Army, with the 543rd Supply Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion and experienced the war from the beginning. During the presentation, he showed pictures of his first “home in the desert,” a tent city. He reflected on the warnings they were given concerning the effects of drinking the water as well as the large bugs and spiders that were a constant companion in the desert. He went on to describe the missile attack they endured in Feb. of 1991 that left 29 people dead. He also described the desert weather and related about the cold nights that took some getting used to. He also told of having seen General Norman Schwarzkopf as well as President George W. Bush when they visited his area of operation.. At the conclusion of his presentation, Gary was joined by former post commander, Mike Mastrangelo. Mike gave a very insightful talk on his experiences with directing the warfare from Washington DC. This included one instance where they informed the troops on the ground that they had just hit the wrong building and then redirected the lethal fire to the right building.
