CRPA considering removal of the Horseshoe Pits in Greenway Village
The CRPA Board, Neighborhood Representative Committee and Recreation Committee wishes to notify residents of the consideration for removal of the Greenway Village park horseshoe pits. If you are a horseshoe player, concerned resident or have general questions - please contact Jason Blackman at the management office at 281-599-0408 or jblackman@stes. com - The decision will be made at the June 26, 2013 Board Meeting. Thank you, Management
Parking in the Street
Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE
When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis. Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses. Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE (NRC) REPRESENTATIVES ARE?
Neighborhood Representative Committee (NRC) REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED
Did you know that each area of Cinco Ranch has Neighborhood Representative Committee (NRC) Representatives positions? While not every position is filled (we’re looking for volunteers who want to get involved!), most have an NRC rep and many have 1st and 2nd alternate reps. These are volunteers from your neighborhood. Your NRC rep is a tremendous source of information and a resource you should use. But, you have to know who your rep is, in order to contact him/her. A quick call to the Cinco Property Association Office at 281599-0408 is all it takes to find out the name and contact information for your rep.
Cinco Southwest I (Sage Meadow, Sierra Meadow, Spring Chase, Sutter’s Way & Indian Ridge)
All the NRC reps are trying to build contact lists to keep you informed, but they need you to reach out and let them know you want to be added to their contact list. Many NRC reps have started Facebook pages to help keep their neighbors informed.
Town Center I (Fountain View Sections I & II, University Place, Cottage Grove/Meadow)
There are many issues facing Cinco Ranch that you should be aware of. Knowing who your NRC rep is, is one way to stay in the know. So call today and find out who your NRC rep is and contact them to let them know you want to be added to their listing.
Cinco Ranch Lost and Found Pets Networking Volunteers & Short-term Fosters Needed
With over 8,700 homes in Cinco Ranch, we need volunteers from each “neighborhood” to receive email blasts for lost and found pets in our community. Would you be willing to receive occasional emails when there is a lost or found pet in your area? We need additional caring, animal-friendly neighbors to help us network to get them back home quickly. If you would like to help reunite lost and found pets with their grateful families, please send your name and contact information to our volunteer coordinator at paigh618@hotmail.com **Also, please get a registered microchip implant for your pets through your vet and make sure they have on collars and tags with contact information to quickly get them back home safely. If you find a lost pet, always contact us FIRST by email at: LostAndFound@CincoRanchLife.org, so we can help with securing a place for a short term foster until the owner is located or they are placed into rescue.

Help Keep Our Lights On
Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www. centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@ pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported. Thank you for your help in this matter. Street Parking Near the Schools
With the Katy ISD bus changes this year, many parents are dropping off and picking up their children at school. This means there are many more cars parked along the streets near the schools. Please be extra cautious in these areas and be alert to the parked cars and the children walking to and from the cars. Thank you.
Cinco and Cinco Southwest Shared Use Agreement
Cinco has 9 pools available during the swim season. Starting in April, the Greenway Village pool will open. This pool stays open through the end of October. Cinco Southwest has two pools - The Lake House Pool and the Rosewood Pool. All of these pools are available for use by both Cinco and Cinco Southwest Residents. The shared use agreement was signed in October of 2009 through the end of 2013. At that time, the shared use agreement will be reviewed.

To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.
Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program
VACCINATION
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
The Cinco Spirit
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road - Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us

Help Avoid Power Outages In Your Neighborhood
Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!
Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Sheriff’s Vacation Home Watch
Vacation Can Be Great! Make sure you return home and feel great.
If you are going on vacation, a business trip or just going away for the weekend, please put your house on a vacation watch list. It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Keeping lawn mowed for a normal appearance to the property will look as if there is active occupancy. Taking preventative steps may deter vandals or thieves from entering your home. Log into the site or call the office to give appropriate information. Make sure to cancel the watch when you return home. Fort Bend County Residents: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us/vacationForm.asp Harris County Residents: Call 713-221-6000 and give home information. Going out of town? Contact your sheriff’s department to have them watch your home.

PROTECT STORM DRAINS
Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. Cinco MUD 8 says Spruce Up Your Sprinkler System and Save
It’s been a long, hard winter for your yard. While your plants go dormant to cope with the colder weather, your sprinkler system can feel the effects of winter, too. Cracks in the pipes can lead to costly leaks and broken sprinkler heads can waste water and money. You could be losing up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season - the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs! Now is the perfect time to spruce up your irrigation system before you ramp up your watering efforts this spring and summer. To get started, follow these four simple steps - inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro - look for an irrigation professional certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. • Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes/ hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape or you have large wet areas, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Are you watering the driveway, house or sidewalk instead of your yard? Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants.

We are looking for active Senior Citizens interested in forming a Tennis Club and a Sand Volley Ball club to be played at the beach club (Between Peek/ Mason and Cinco Ranch Blvd./Westheimer Park). If interested, call 713298-4030. The purpose is to keep ACTIVE and FLEXIBLE in declining ages rather than to play a professional game.
ATTENTION ALL MEN AGE 55 OR OLDER
• Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water and money. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling.
The Cinco ranch Senior Men’s Golf Association is looking for new members. All levels of play. Seniors play every Monday and Thursday, 7:30 AM. Shot-gun start. Monthly Inter-club Tournaments. Year-end Club Championship Tournament.

The Greater Houston Pool Management, Inc. Team would like to welcome you to the 2013 swim season. We sincerely look forward to serving you and your guests throughout this summer! GHPMI was founded on three guiding principles: safety, customer service and cleanliness. With safety as our # 1 priority, we spend a great deal of our time and resources making sure that every GHPMI employee that enters your swimming facility has the appropriate tools and training to be proactive in their efforts to avoid problems and effective during an emergency situation. We also feel that it is important that when any community member visits the swimming pool for an outing, they are greeted by a smiling, friendly and professional lifeguard staff. The overall cleanliness of your facility is just as important to our team. Clear and properly-maintained pool water, pleasantsmelling bathrooms that are cleaned and stocked daily and a debris-free pool deck are what you should expect when visiting your facility. Please take the time to introduce yourself to your lifeguard team this summer! We truly enjoy getting to know the members we so proudly serve. Our whole team is working hard to hire and train Lifeguards and Pool Managers, ordering pool chemicals and supplies and hiring the support staff that will enable your facilities to run well during the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for all the young adults who live in the Cinco Ranch community! We are always looking for hard working individuals within the community to fulfill our summer staff needs. We are also actively hiring swim instructors that are looking to have a positive, exciting and skill-building job this summer. They learn important skills such as job responsibility, risk management, customer service and key leadership skills. Opportunities are also available to any adult (especially teachers!) that may also be looking for a rewarding summer job. Applications for employment can be found on our employment website, www.BeALifeguard.com The GHPMI Programs Department is excited to offer your community programs that will help enhance your family’s summer experience. GHPMI provides a variety of programs, such as: group and private learn to swim classes, Guard Start, water aerobics, pool parties and more. For a detailed list of what is available at your facility, please visit us at www.takeaswimlesson. com for classes and www.haveapoolparty.com for pool parties. If something
The Cinco Spirit
is not currently offered at your facility, please let us know of your interest. We make every effort to accommodate all requests. We want your visit to the pool to be a safe and positive experience. We pride ourselves in maintaining excellent communication between our team and the community members. Year-in and year-out, we receive many compliments on our proactive approach. We believe you will agree that GHPMI goes to great lengths to see to it that we stay ahead of all potential situations. We are pleased to provide an on-call person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year that can take care of any emergency that may arise. Residents may also contact us through our website, www.greaterhoustonpool. com to take advantage of a variety of services including anonymous contact forms, details about their child’s summer job, online registration for community CPR or First Aid classes, babysitting courses, as well as company news and highlights. Finally, please allow us to start the swim season off on a positive note by offering some valuable safety reminders. With your support we are confident that the 2013 swim season will be a safe and fun experience for all. • Parents must closely supervise their children at all times. Remember, it only takes seconds for a child to drown. • Remember that there are several different types of people who like to use the pool throughout the summer. Whether young or old, recreational or competitive, everyone wants to have a good time. • The safety of the children in the baby pool is the parents/guardians responsibility. The lifeguards will always enforce the pool rules throughout the facility, but children who cannot swim must have an adult within arms reach at all times. The same rule applies even if the child is wearing a floatation device. • Define a safe zone for your children where they can always touch the bottom. One of the most common saves a lifeguard must make is when a swimmer strays to an area that is too deep for them to stand. • Do not dive in areas marked “NO DIVING.” Nearly 90 percent of all spinal injuries occur in the shallow end of the pool. • Keep children from playing with or around the main drain. The main drain suction can be very powerful. • Breath-holding games can be very dangerous and may cause cardiac arrhythmia or seizures. Games like who can hold their breath the longest and swimming the longest distance underwater should be avoided at all times. • Access rules to the facility will be strictly enforced and is the responsibility of each member to understand and follow the rules as set forth by your Association. It is a very awkward and uncomfortable situation for everyone when a lifeguard must ask a member to go back home to get the appropriate access tag. If you should ever have a question about the pool rules, just ask a lifeguard or manager. It is better to be safe than sorry! We look forward to a safe, funfilled summer in 2013. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

the strength of character of the dedicated men and women who lead and volunteer and to the persistence and perseverance of the parents and young men in this troop. Troop 584 has been blessed with a very high level of parent volunteer participation. Each month during the school year, the troop goes on an outing where the boys learn camping skills and practice leadership and teamwork. David Hartt coordinates the troop outings, but the boys are required to plan, lead and conduct the activities on their own. The troop also participates in winter and summer camps, where the young men complete merit badge work and participate in swimming, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, sailing and snorkeling. Robert Miller and Debbie Vaughn have provided years of service certifying swimmers and coordinating merit badge classes. All this is accomplished by parents volunteering to give up their nights, weekends and vacations in order to serve during these events.
Chris Mohindroo (front, center) became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Also pictured are his Eagle Board of Review members (back), Neva Leszczynski, Denise Narum, Paul King, David Bartine and Ann Ewell.
TROOP 584 CELEBRATES 50TH EAGLE SCOUT On January 15, 2013, Chris Mohindroo became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Troop 584 is under the leadership of Scoutmaster Mike McKenna. Kevin Devers serves as Troop Committee Chair, Frank Coselli as Troop 584 Unit Commissioner and Forrest Bjerkaas serves as Sam Houston Area Council West Division Commissioner. The troop was chartered under the leadership of its original Scoutmaster, Layne Scholl, on July 31, 2000, by The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch Church in Katy, TX. Earning Eagle Scout Rank is an extraordinary accomplishment, since the requirements are demanding and only 5% of Scouts reach that level. The fact that 50 young men from Troop 584 have done so is a testament to

Troop 584 participates in High Adventure Camps such as Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier. Four young men and an adult, Matthew Miller, Chris Mohindroo, Graham Burcaw, David Bjerkaas and Raj Mohindroo recently completed all three to earn the Triple Crown Award. The requirements for Eagle Scout are designed to prepare a young man to succeed in life and to know what to do in an emergency. Ken Guion provides safety training. A heavy emphasis is placed on serving God and country and on community service. Troop 584 has provided help with July 4th activities, charity fun runs, numerous church and religious events, KISD activities, KVPAC and other nonprofit events, disaster relief efforts, ramps for homes for the elderly and handicapped, collections for animal shelters and numerous ecology studies. Troop 584 is very diverse from a cultural and religious standpoint. Members come from several different countries and are Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim and Hindu. The outings have afforded the boys and their parents an opportunity to interact with and learn about, different cultures. With the world getting smaller and the economies becoming global, this troop offers an excellent opportunity for multicultural leadership training and experience.

Our celebration will be held at Congregation Or Ami - 3443 Wilcrest Drive (between Richmond and Westpark) - on Sunday evening, April 28th starting at 5 pm. Festivities will include a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music and dancing and a silent auction. During this event, we will also be honoring and thanking one of our congregants, Augusta Levine, for her many years of volunteer work to train our students to read from the Torah and chant Haftorah. Tickets are $100 per person, with sponsorships for tables of 10 starting at $1,500. You will also have the opportunity to contribute a photo and/or message for a tribute book that will be presented to Augusta Levine. For additional information, please call Congregation Or Ami at 713-334-4300.

Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Their ministry is to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of metropolitan and suburban Houston through the uplifting message of gospel music. Their song list includes traditional, well-known hymns, as well as more recent offerings from contemporary recording quartets. Glory Bound features Bass John Voll, Tenor Bill Beck, Baritone Chip Feazel, High Tenor Jeff Dethrow and Tony Custer on the piano. They are frequently seen and heard at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy. You can also find them singing for churches, shelters, retirement and assisted living centers, nursing homes and other venues where they can make a joyful noise. Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company
Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company proudly presents Ravenscroft, by Don Nigro, Thursday through Saturday and Monday, May 3-18, 2013 with a preview on Thursday, May 2nd. Directed by Rob Kimbro and starring Sean Patrick Judge, Michelle Edwards, Claire Anderson, Karen Schlag, Zoquera Millburne and Kara Ray. SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
