May 2013 HOW TO KILL WASPS HOW TO ELIMINATE WASPS FROM YOUR YARD

Yellow jackets, paper wasps and hornets are the most common types of wasps that build their nests right where you don’t want them - in and around the lawn and garden. While these insects are often seen as pests due to their nasty stings, they’re actually important for the garden as both predatory insects and pollinators. However, when their nests get a little too close for comfort, like in the yard, it’s sometimes necessary to eliminate wasps to avoid any future problems that may arise. Wasp Deterrent The best way to deal with wasps is to minimize their numbers by deterring them from the area. Do not keep any food (including your pet’s) lying around. Keep drinks covered when outdoors and always ensure that garbage cans are tightly sealed. Also, keep any fallen fruits from nearby trees or shrubs, as well as in the garden, picked up, as their sweet juices attract the wasps. How to Get Rid of Wasps If you already have a wasp problem and you need to know how to kill wasps, then it helps to understand what type you are dealing with and their particular nesting habits. Yellow jackets, for instance, normally build their nests in the ground and unfortunately, you may not even know they’re there until it’s too late. Nothing is worse than going out to the garden and coming back with a dozen or so stings. These aggressive wasps can also be found nesting in trees and shrubs, beneath eaves and within other areas like wall voids in old buildings. Hornets, too, commonly nest in trees or under the eaves of buildings. Paper wasps, which are the least aggressive, can be found just about anywhere, building their nests under nearly any horizontal surface - including eaves, overhangs, tree limbs and within abandoned structures. Most of the time all of these wasps prefer quiet, out-of-the-way places. Of course, it doesn’t always seem to work out like that. This is when getting rid of wasps is our only option through the use of sprays or other means. How to Kill Wasps Generally, spring is the most ideal time for killing wasps, before the queen has established her colony. By late summer and fall, their nests decline as they become more interested in collecting pollen or foraging for sugary sweets. If the nest is large or you’re dealing with the more aggressive types, like yellow jackets and hornets, you may want to call in reinforcements (professionals) to handle the job. grab the can of wasp and hornet spray and following label instructions, spray the insecticide into the nest entrance or saturate the paper wasp nest during evening hours when the wasps are less active. In addition to regular wasp spray, some people also use WD-40. However, when killing wasps in a plant (such as a tree or shrub), this isn’t always practical. That’s when using a home remedy to remove a wasp nest is necessary. For aerial nests, cover with a trash bag and seal it shut. Cut the nest from the tree and leave it in the sun the next day or freeze it to kill the wasps inside. For those in the ground, pour a soapy solution (preferably hot) down the entrance and then seal it off with dirt or a large boulder. Keep in mind these usually have two entrances, so locating the back entrance is a good idea before you start. www.gardeningknowhow.com

Propane Tank Safety: • Never leave a tank inside a vehicle. • Never attempt to fill the propane tank yourself - have your tank filled only by trained professionals. • Never attempt to repair your propane tank. Contact a propane dealer for repair or replacement needs. • When transporting, always secure the tank in the upright position on the floor of the back seat. Never transport the tank in your front seat or trunk. Ensure the tank valve is closed and the valve opening is plugged or capped. Keep windows open to provide ventilation in case the tank you are transporting has leaks. • Store propane tanks outdoors, upright and off the ground on a base that will not burn. • Do not store a spare tank too close to a grill or any other object that can expose it to very high temperatures. • Never store a propane tank indoors, including inside your garage or basement.

• Do not smoke near your propane tank. • Before lighting your grill, always check your tank for dents, rust or leaks. • Never use a lighter or matches to check for gas leaks. • If you detect a gas leak, contact your local fire department immediately. Grill and Patio Heater Safety: • Always turn the grill off at the gas source first, then the burners. • Always follow the grill and patio heater manual’s instructions. • Do not allow children to play near the grill, heater or propane tank. • Always operate grill and patio heaters outdoors in well-ventilated areas. • Use leak-detection solution, available at most propane retailers, to check all connections for tightness. • Never grill in a garage, breezeway, carport, porch or under any surface that can burn. • Keep the grill lid open when lighting. • Check the grill hose regularly for cracks, brittleness and leaks. • Cover disconnected hose-end fittings and burner air intakes with small plastic bags or fitting caps for protection when the grill is not in use. • Make sure the grill is shut off and cooled before covering it. THE HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY

The first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. Despite having penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic 12 years earlier, Howe had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War that she called on Mother’s to come together and protest what she saw as the futility of their sons killing the sons of other mothers. She called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood. At one point Jarvis even proposed converting July 4th into Mother’s Day, in order to dedicate the nation’s anniversary to peace. Eventually, however, June 2nd was designated for the celebration. • Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

Texas Christian School sent nine students ranging from grades 1st – 4th grade to compete in the ACSI Speech Competition Friday, March 1st. The students were required to select a topic, memorize the speech for their topic

and recite their memorization in front of judges with fluency and animation. Texas Christian School proudly came home with 2 superiors, 3 excellent and 4 good. Sixteen new members were inducted into the National Honor Society at Faith West Academy High School during a ceremony Thursday, March 21st, at the FWA auditorium in Katy. The National Honor Society was established in 1921. “The organization has upwards of one million members,” said FWA Chapter president Stan Stanulonis. “Next year will be the 16th year of the Faith West Chapter of the National Honor Society and these 16 inductees will be extraordinary members,” he said prior to inducing the guest speaker. Guest speaker Marsue Ferguson, education and language consultant (specializing in teacher training), addressed the audience with comments about the five pillars of NHS - leadership, scholarship, service, character and citizenship. Mrs. Ferguson encouraged the new inductees to make the most of every opportunity to serve and lead others with honor. “Do well and be able to look back and say ‘I did some good’,” she said. Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. Some of those service activities included: Katy Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity orphanage in Vietnam for children with dioxin disease, St. Justin’s food bank and Houston Food Bank. After the ceremony, there was a congratulatory reception hosted by the current 20 members for new inductees and guests.

For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.”

During 2013, Congregation Or Ami, a conservative synagogue serving West Houston, Katy and Fort Bend County, will be celebrating its 12th birthday. As is customary for Jewish girls of this age, this means it’s time to have a Bat Mitzvah party! Our celebration will be held at Congregation Or Ami - 3443 Wilcrest Drive (between Richmond and Westpark) - on Sunday evening, April 28th starting at 5 pm. Festivities will include a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music and dancing and a silent auction. The Bible Seminary now enrolling for Fall 2013 Master of Divinity and Bible Certificate classes!

Registration is now underway for our Annual Vacation Bible School at Epiphany Lutheran Church & School for all children ages 3 years through entering 5th grade. Join us the week of June 10th - 14th from 9 am - 12:30 pm for KINGDOM ROCK VBS. This year, we will transform the church into a Royal Kingdom as we celebrate Standing Strong for God. Each day the campers will play games, learn music, create delicious snacks, go on Bible adventures and more. Tired of those VBS paper plate arts/crafts projects so are we! That’s why we have replaced them with our Imagination Station! Each day your child will experience a different make and take science project that will WOW their friends and family while reinforcing our Bible lesson. Our campers will also be part of a special mission project to send Bibles to children in India. On the last day of camp, parents and friends are invited to our Fanfare Finale filled with music, video clips and lots of pictures recapping our week of camp! Gospel Quartet in Katy ~ Glory Bound

You don’t have to look far to find good Gospel music in the Katy area. For the past year, the men of Glory Bound have been singing and entertaining the crowds at various venues in and around Katy. Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Their ministry is to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of metropolitan and suburban Houston through the uplifting message of gospel music. Their song list includes traditional, well-known hymns, as well as more recent offerings from contemporary recording quartets. Glory Bound features Bass John Voll, Tenor Bill Beck, Baritone Chip Feazel, High Tenor Jeff Dethrow and Tony Custer on the piano. They love sharing wonderful Christian music as it was first performed, with rich vocal harmonies and lively piano accompaniment. They are frequently seen and heard at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy.

The Cinco Ranch Rotary is excited to announce that registration for the Camo 5K is now open. The Cinco Ranch Rotary Camo 5K, formerly the Cinco Ranch Rotary 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk, Stroll & Roll, will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8 AM and the 1 Mile Walk will begin at 8:05 AM. The race will begin and end at the Villagio Town Center, located at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Road. An anticipated 700 runners and walkers of all ages will fill the streets around the Villagio to raise money for Team RWB and Special Buddies. Summer Camps & Events Houston Family Arts Center Actors Academy Announces 2013 Summer Camps

Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies - especially designed for kids and teens. The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The teen 3-week performance camps are Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Once on this Island. The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and before-and-after care for working parents. Every 3-week performance camp culminates in 4 performances. Each parent will receive 2 free tickets to a performance of their choice. Additional tickets can be purchased at $10 per person for shows featuring grades 1-6 performers. Prices for the teen performances are either $12 or $15 depending on the venue. All 3-week camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a camp t-shirt, costumes and other needed materials. Each one-week camp has a performance showcase for family and friends on the final day of camp. Parents receive two free tickets and additional tickets are only $5. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The Katy Essential Tremor Support Group meets bi-monthly on the second Thursday of each month, at the Heritage Grand Clubhouse, 25125 North Heritage Grand Circle, in Katy at 4:00 PM. Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a new store bought spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. Fruit Trifles To Go INGREDIENTS: 4 (8 ounce) packages reduced-fat cream cheese, softened 2 cups brown sugar 4 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 pound fresh strawberries, coarsely chopped 1 fresh pineapple - peeled, cored and chopped (or canned, drained) 1 pound seedless grapes, halved 1 pint blueberries 25 clear, plastic (10 ounce) cups 12 sugar cookies, crushed 2 kiwis, peeled and sliced DIRECTIONS: Mix cream cheese, brown sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Refrigerate until cold, about 30 minutes. In a separate bowl, lightly mix together the chopped strawberries, pineapple, grapes and the blueberries. Scoop about 3 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture into the bottom of each plastic cup to make a half-inch thick layer.
