Grand Lakes News Is all that glitters really gold? Recently, I learned, not so much, even in the form of friendships. When presented with temptation, many of us succumb to the shiny and shimmery qualities. Also, when someone is advising you “don’t do this because the consequences aren’t good,” our inner rebel takes over and we WILL do that very thing we were advised not to do. Why? It’s because we are curious. Curiosity, learning and open-mindedness are all great things. But the shiny and shimmery qualities of temptation aren’t so much. Someone near and dear to me gave in to temptation and this jeopardized both our personal and professional relationship. To make matters worse, the situation even worsened the “guilty by association” phrase our parents always used to point out to us. It’s amazing how as children, those words and phrases - all that glitters isn’t gold; guilty by association; if everyone jumps off a cliff, will you? - come full circle later on in life. I’m grateful I followed my parents’ and my mentors’ guidance and advice well at a young age. Moral of the story - those catchy clichés prove to help later on in life. An ideal post workout snack looks like this: 1) Your Post-Exercise Fluid Needs: Most moderate exercisers will lose about one quart (4 cups) of fluid per hour of exercise, so try to drink about 16-20 ounces of water shortly after your workout to aid the recovery process. 2) Calories. Ideally, try to eat enough calories to equal 50% of the calories you burned during your workout. So if you burn about 600 calories during your workout, try to eat 300 calories afterward. 1) Carbohydrates. Roughly 60% of the calories you eat at this time should come from carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief, your body needs more carbohydrates than protein after a workout, to replace the muscle fuel (glycogen) you used up and to prepare for your next exercise session. 2) Protein. This protein will stop your body from breaking down muscle tissue for energy and initiate the process of rebuilding and repairing your muscles. About 25% of the calories you eat after a workout should come from protein. 3) Fat. Fat doesn’t play a big role in post-workout recovery and eating too much fat after a workout won’t help your weight control or fitness endeavors. Only 15% (or less) of your post-workout calories should come from fat. The ideal time to eat after a workout is within 30 minutes to two hours, when your body is ready and waiting to top off its fuel tanks to prepare for your next workout. Here are some sample food combinations for your post exercise meal: • Bread, a bagel or an English muffin with cheese or peanut butter • Dried fruit and nuts • Cottage cheese with fruit • Fruit juice with cheese • Yogurt with fruit • Veggie omelet with toast or roll • Chocolate milk • Cereal with milk • Eggs and toast • Turkey/ham/chicken/ roast beef sandwich • Vegetable stir-fry with chicken, shrimp, edamame or tofu • Crackers with low fat cheese • Rice or popcorn cakes with nut butter • Smoothie (with milk, yogurt or added protein powder) • A protein or energy bar • A protein or energy shake • Pancakes and eggs

cinco de mayo - a brief history The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16th. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S.-Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people with a Mexican heritage. In these areas, the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico. Commercial interests in the United States and Mexico have also had a hand in promoting the holiday, with products and services focused on Mexican food, beverages and festivities, with music playing a more visible role as well. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts during the week following up to May 5th, so that Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south and being adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year.

Most people will spend under $100. A survey from PriceGrabber indicates that 62% of consumers plan on dropping under $100 on Mother’s Day presents. Some consumers plan on kissing up to Mom more than others: 8% say they’ll spend over $250. There are free things you can “give” Mom. Many stores and restaurants offer freebies and specials on Mother’s Day: Some businesses dish out free frozen yogurts to moms on Sunday, movie rentals may allowing customers to send one free night’s rental to moms (and anyone who has a mom) via Facebook and there may be stores giving moms a free breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and coffee before 11 AM. Everybody can at least pick up the phone, right? Roughly 20% of men admit to having forgotten about Mother’s Day, compared to just 8% of women, according to a survey conducted for RetailMeNot. This makes guys look bad, but women have an obvious advantage to help them remember the holiday - many of them are mothers, after all. Sons are more likely to give mom what she really wants. In another survey, the most popular gift selected by moms was to be taken out for a meal - preferred by 34% of mothers, compared to 10% who’d like jewelry. While 26% of sons say they’re likely to take mom out for brunch, dinner or another meal on Mother’s Day, just 20% of daughters will do so. Men drop more money on Mother’s Day too. According to the National Retail Federation, men will spend an average of $189.74 to celebrate Mother’s Day, while women can be expected to drop $117.42, on average. About two-thirds of survey respondents who plan on giving Mother’s Day gifts will hand over flowers, the most popular gift item. Paying off mom’s bills may be the best gift of all. The top financial wish of mothers with kids living at home is that they could get out of debt. So, in theory, paying off your mother’s credit card balance - or at least maybe $189.74 of it - would make her dreams come true. Something tells me many moms wouldn’t exactly appreciate the gesture, though. Credit: business.com

Grand Lakes Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Ham Radio Volunteers The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? Leslie Power and Shelia Maneffa are gathering information about CERT trained individuals in Grand Lakes. If you are CERT member and would like to be included in this Grand Lakes Team, please email Leslie: freetofly1234@gmail. com - TEEN CERT trained members are welcome, too. We would like to meet at least quarterly in order to stay informed and organized.

Pet Poops/You Scoop When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR Pets on Leashes For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com

Stop That Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please go to txlabrescue.org to check out their website.

Grand Lakes Dog Park Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

Why You Need a Health Care Proxy You may someday face a sudden health crisis due to an accident or serious illness that leaves you unable to make your own medical decisions. Fortunately, there is a means to address this potential future concern - it’s called a health care proxy. A health care proxy allows you to legally designate someone - a proxy - to make medical decisions for you. Keep in mind that in some states you may even be able to combine a health care proxy and living will into a single document. Hospitals and nursing homes are required to ask about the existence of any advance directive when you are admitted. In most states, a health care proxy does not take effect until you can no longer make medical decisions for yourself; until then, only you can legally consent to any treatment. In addition, you can always change or cancel the document as long as you are mentally alert. If you decide to make changes to any of these documents, be sure to do so in writing. Though it is a legal document, a health care proxy cannot handle every medical situation. Here are some key points to consider before you designate a proxy. Some caregivers could override your document. Most states permit a doctor or health care facility to reject any advance directive for reasons of conscience. In these cases, the doctor or facility must tell you or your health care proxy about this when you are admitted to care and must offer to help transfer you to another party or facility that will comply with your wishes or the health care proxy. The advance directive may not be followed by emergency medical services (EMS). If EMS is summoned to treat you in case of a lifethreatening situation, they are usually required to resuscitate and stabilize you until you reach the hospital, regardless of an existing advance directive.

Know state laws. Though all states accept health care proxies as legal, each varies considerably in what is required of these documents. Also, if a health care proxy is written to your state’s specification but you undergo medical treatment when visiting another state, the rules regulating health care proxies in the state in which treatment takes place will usually prevail. Do not use a health care proxy unless you fully trust the person you have named. If you don’t have a health care proxy, many states will appoint a person to make medical decisions on your behalf. Usually, this person is your closest relative, whose values may or may not coincide with your intentions. The information in this communication is not intended to be legal advice and should not be treated as such. Each individual’s situation is different. You should contact your legal professional to discuss your personal situation.

Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees - contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to, all bees. • If you know you are allergic to bee stings, check with your doctor about a sting kit.

Pour sauce over enchiladas and top with remaining cheese. Bake 20-25 minutes and then broil for a few minutes to brown the cheese.

As summer approaches, we want to remind residents that as weather warms bee infestation can be a problem for property residents. Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors, especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony, the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners.

CC Building by Design, LLC Bee-proof your property • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (1/8inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (1/8-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall, inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator. Potential Bee nesting sites Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive, but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. Bees will collect water whereever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet...etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools: When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution. Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle.

Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soapwater solution will kill the bees, but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually, you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality, you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population. Pet water and birdbaths: 1 part vinegar to 256 parts water (2 tablespoons vinegar to 1 gallon water). Note: DO NOT USE THE SOAP-WATER SOLUTION ABOVE IN BIRD BATHS & PET WATER! “Texas A&M University Honey Bee Information,” (http://honeybee.tamu.edu/page3/page3.html) - 3/23/2013.

KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

president Stan Stanulonis. “Next year will be the 16th year of the Faith West Chapter of the National Honor Society and these 16 inductees will be extraordinary members,” he said prior to inducing the guest speaker. Guest speaker Marsue Ferguson, education and language consultant (specializing in teacher training), addressed the audience with comments about the five pillars of NHS - leadership, scholarship, service, character and citizenship. Mrs. Ferguson encouraged the new inductees to make the most of every opportunity to serve and lead others with honor. “Do well and be able to look back and say ‘I did some good’,” she said. Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. Some of those service activities included: Katy Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity orphanage in Vietnam for children with dioxin disease, St. Justin’s food bank and Houston Food Bank. After the ceremony, there was a congratulatory reception hosted by the current 20 members for new inductees and guests.

Chris Mohindroo (front, center) became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Also pictured are his Eagle Board of Review members (back), Neva Leszczynski, Denise Narum, Paul King, David Bartine and Ann Ewell.

TROOP 584 CELEBRATES 50 TH EAGLE SCOUT On January 15, 2013, Chris Mohindroo became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Troop 584 is under the leadership of Scoutmaster Mike McKenna. Kevin Devers serves as Troop Committee Chair, Frank Coselli as Troop 584 Unit Commissioner and Forrest Bjerkaas serves as Sam Houston Area Council West Division Commissioner. The troop was chartered under the leadership of its original Scoutmaster, Layne Scholl, on July 31, 2000, by The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch Church in Katy, TX. Earning Eagle Scout Rank is an extraordinary accomplishment, since the requirements are demanding and only 5% of Scouts reach that level. The fact that 50 young men from Troop 584 have done so is a testament to the strength of

Grand Lakes May 2013

character of the dedicated men and women who lead and volunteer and to the persistence and perseverance of the parents and young men in this troop. Troop 584 has been blessed with a very high level of parent volunteer participation. Each month during the school year, the troop goes on an outing where the boys learn camping skills and practice leadership and teamwork. David Hartt coordinates the troop outings, but the boys are required to plan, lead and conduct the activities on their own. The troop also participates in winter and summer camps, where the young men complete merit badge work and participate in swimming, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, sailing and snorkeling. Robert Miller and Debbie Vaughn have provided years of service certifying swimmers and coordinating merit badge classes. All this is accomplished by parents volunteering to give up their nights, weekends and vacations in order to serve during these events. Troop 584 participates in High Adventure Camps such as Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier. Four young men and an adult, Matthew Miller, Chris Mohindroo, Graham Burcaw, David Bjerkaas and Raj Mohindroo recently completed all three to earn the Triple Crown Award. The requirements for Eagle Scout are designed to prepare a young man to succeed in life and to know what to do in an emergency. Ken Guion provides safety training. A heavy emphasis is placed on serving God and country and on community service. Troop 584 has provided help with July 4th activities, charity fun runs, numerous church and religious events, KISD activities, KVPAC and other nonprofit events, disaster relief efforts, ramps for homes for the elderly and handicapped, collections for animal shelters and numerous ecology studies. Troop 584 is very diverse from a cultural and religious standpoint. Members come from several different countries and are Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim and Hindu. The outings have afforded the boys and their parents an opportunity to interact with and learn about, different cultures. With the world getting smaller and the economies becoming global, this troop offers an excellent opportunity for multicultural leadership training and experience.

The KJF (April 26 and 27, 2013) is hosted by the Katy Independent School District and is in its 5th year. The purpose for this event is to increase exposure, education and entertainment of the jazz music medium. The event is designed to benefit participating student jazz groups, individual student musicians, jazz music educators and to provide top quality jazz performances to the community. The KJF is non-competitive in nature. It is designed to provide a performance opportunity for all jazz groups and for them to receive constructive comments / instruction from world-renowned professional musicians. For the jazz enthusiast, the opportunity to hear student jazz ensemble performances throughout the festival day, hear professional jazz artists teaching their crafts and skills and then complete the day with attending a professional jazz concert provides unparalleled insight into the development and preservation of this true American music art form.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company proudly presents Ravenscroft, by Don Nigro, Thursday through Saturday and Monday, May 3-18, 2013 with a preview on Thursday, May 2nd. Directed by Rob Kimbro and starring Sean Patrick Judge, Michelle Edwards, Claire Anderson, Karen Schlag, Zoquera Millburne and Kara Ray. SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. You’ll never look at Agatha Christie quite the same way again… Paolo Alto Weekly

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK Program

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law”

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Dr. Amy Vogt

Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Former Commander Col (Ret) Mike Mastrangelo and current Senior Vice Commander Gary Drahos.

VFW Remembers Operation Desert Storm On the 22nd anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, VFW Post 9182 paused to remember. Before the Post’s monthly business meeting, Sr. Vice Commander Gary Drahos gave a very enlightening talk on this “Gulf War.” Drahos, was a specialist in the Army, with the 543rd Supply Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion and experienced the war from the beginning. During the presentation, he showed pictures of his first “home in the desert,” a tent city. He reflected on the warnings they were given concerning the effects of drinking the water as well as the large bugs and spiders that were a constant companion in the desert. He went on to describe the missile attack they endured in Feb. of 1991 that left 29 people dead. He also described the desert weather and related about the cold nights that took some getting used to. He also told of having seen General Norman Schwarzkopf as well as President George W. Bush when they visited his area of operation.. At the conclusion of his presentation, Gary was joined by former post commander, Mike Mastrangelo. Mike gave a very insightful talk on his experiences with directing the warfare from Washington DC. This included one instance where they informed the troops on the ground that they had just hit the wrong building and then redirected the lethal fire to the right building.

National Charity League Lady Bird Chapter Honors Its Inaugural Graduating Seniors The Lady Bird Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) proudly honors its graduating seniors at the chapter’s first annual Senior Presentation. The members, family and friends celebrated the accomplishments of each of the young ladies at a dinner and dance at the Falcon Point Country Club. The Lady Bird chapter is the newest National Charity League chapter in Katy, formed in 2010 and chartered in 2012. NCL encourages civic engagement, commitment to community service and leadership development, to cultivate future community and business leaders. The Lady Bird Chapter now supports 17 philanthropies with a special emphasis on children, working with charities such as Krause Center, Project Linus, Fort Bend County Women’s and Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Kids Connected, Operation Home Front, Sire and others. This new chapter has already positively impacted the

These three young ladies in the first graduating class of Lady Birds showcase the intelligent, artistic and most of all compassionate philanthropists they have become. The 2013 graduates, from three different Katy high schools were strangers when they joined the NCL Lady Bird Chapter, but became a cohesive team and best of all, good friends through their efforts in giving back to the community. Meredith Bunning (Seven Lakes), Sarah Dicken (Taylor) and Presley Taylor (Katy) have teamed together and excelled in their dedication and commitment to the Katy community, while inspiring the younger Lady Birds to make a difference in the world. The senior class, while small, has made a big impact. They have made blankets for sick children in local hospitals, hosted Christmas and birthday parties for homeless children, mentored troubled teens, helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity, visited hospitals - going room to room- to sing for the sick elderly patients and worked at food pantries and nursing homes. The seniors stated, “We may not be able to save lives, but we can bring comfort to others during a crisis in their lives, through our decisions to act. We choose to make a difference.” Congratulations NCL Lady Bird Class of 2013. You do make a difference.
