To Residents of Green trails
I, Sgt. Robinson, with Harris County Constable Pct. 5, have worked in your neighborhood for several years. During this time, I have found that one of the biggest problems is that people leave the doors to their vehicles and garages unlocked. If you have valuables, do not leave them in the vehicle, take them inside. If you have an alarm system, make sure that the alarm company calls us at 281-463-6666 and that you have a good current contact number with the alarm company, so we can reach you in case of an emergency. If you see anything suspicious, give us a call. My motto is: “The only bad call is the call not made.” Sincerely, Sgt. Robinson
Be a Good Neighbor
When you (or your lawn service) cut your grass or trim shrubs, please be sure clippings are disposed of properly. Our trash contract includes pick up of yard debris properly bagged or bundled and placed at the curb. Note: Remember to not leave bags of clippings at the curb for multiple days. Debris should not be put into storm drains or over fences into common areas. This can block proper drainage and breed mosquitoes, plus the decomposing material smells. Dumping litter or yard waste into storm drains or onto someone else’s property is illegal and you can be ticketed.

We have also received complaints that some yard services blow clippings in the street to neighboring houses. If you think your contractor is doing this, please direct them to pick up properly.
Security Tips
If you see something suspicious, call the constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them. Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. See our website for other tips.

Call the Constable and report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for law enforcement in our neighborhood is to call the constable direct at 281-463-6666. An alert Green Trails resident recently foiled a car theft by calling the constable when something didn’t seem right. The suspects were arrested. Remember, “No call is too small.”
STREET LIGHT OUTAGES
Please note that the association pays electrical charges for a streetlight whether the bulb is functioning or not. To report street light outages you can contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or www.centerpointenergy. com. Be sure to note the pole number and the street address.
How Do We Look?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

About Our Furry Friends
Harris County requires both dogs and cats to be vaccinated, licensed and kept in fenced yards or on leashes. This is for the safety of both our neighbors and your pets. Remember, that if you leave food outside for a dog or cat, you may be attracting other nuisance animals, including rats. If your dog tends to bark, please do not leave it outside. When walking your pets, PLEASE PICK UP AFTER THEM!

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

Guest speaker Marsue Ferguson, education and language consultant (specializing in teacher training), addressed the audience with comments about the five pillars of NHS - leadership, scholarship, service, character and citizenship. Mrs. Ferguson encouraged the new inductees to make the most of every opportunity to serve and lead others with honor. “Do well and be able to look back and say ‘I did some good’,” she said.
“We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy under the bankruptcy code.”

Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company proudly presents Ravenscroft, by Don Nigro, Thursday through Saturday and Monday, May 3-18, 2013 with a preview on Thursday, May 2nd. Directed by Rob Kimbro and starring Sean Patrick Judge, Michelle Edwards, Claire Anderson, Karen Schlag, Zoquera Millburne and Kara Ray. SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. You’ll never look at Agatha Christie quite the same way again… Paolo Alto Weekly Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price- $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will continue their annual Fillthe-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday, May 11, 2013 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will be out in the community collecting funds for the campaign. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. An Art Volunteer Opportunity at Houston Aphasia Recovery Center
Stephanie Schmadeke, Director of the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC), a not for profit facility which helps people recover from brain injury, is looking for volunteers to teach painting or drawing lessons to their clients. Their location is 6260 Westpark (in the West Loop/SW Freeway area). This would be perfect for someone who has time and a calling to help people or for students who are looking for community service and teaching experience. Even if you are new to art, you would have something to offer. Just give them what you know. That will be more than enough. (Paint mixing, pallets, brush choices, hand positions, perspective, shading, blending, etc.) All would be a great help to someone recovering from Aphasia. The times/days/number of students are all flexible. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmadeke, 713-628-9973 or to learn more about Aphasia, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia.
