Yellow jackets, paper wasps and hornets are the most common types of wasps that build their nests right where you don’t want them - in and around the lawn and garden. While these insects are often seen as pests due to their nasty stings, they’re actually important for the garden as both predatory insects and pollinators. However, when their nests get a little too close for comfort, like in the yard, it’s sometimes necessary to eliminate wasps to avoid any future problems that may arise. Wasp Deterrent The best way to deal with wasps is to minimize their numbers by deterring them from the area. Do not keep any food (including your pet’s) lying around. Keep drinks covered when outdoors and always ensure that garbage cans are tightly sealed. Also, keep any fallen fruits from nearby trees or shrubs, as well as in the garden, picked up, as their sweet juices attract the wasps. How to Get Rid of Wasps If you already have a wasp problem and you need to know how to kill wasps, then it helps to understand what type you are dealing with and their particular nesting habits. Yellow jackets, for instance, normally build their nests in the ground and unfortunately, you may not even know they’re there until it’s too late. Nothing is worse than going out to the garden and coming back with a dozen or so stings. These aggressive wasps can also be found nesting in trees and shrubs, beneath eaves and within other areas like wall voids in old buildings. Hornets, too, commonly nest in trees or under the eaves of buildings. Paper wasps, which are the least aggressive, can be found just about anywhere, building their nests under nearly any horizontal surface - including eaves, overhangs, tree limbs and within abandoned structures. Most of the time all of these wasps prefer quiet, out-of-the-way places. Of course, it doesn’t always seem to work out like that. This is when getting rid of wasps is our only option through the use of sprays or other means. How to Kill Wasps Generally, spring is the most ideal time for killing wasps, before the queen has established her colony. By late summer and fall, their nests decline as they become more interested in collecting pollen or foraging for sugary sweets. If the nest is large or you’re dealing with the more aggressive types, like yellow jackets and hornets, you may want to call in reinforcements (professionals) to handle the job. In addition to regular wasp spray, some people also use WD-40. However, when killing wasps in a plant (such as a tree or shrub), this isn’t always practical. That’s when using a home remedy to remove a wasp nest is necessary. For aerial nests, cover with a trash bag and seal it shut. Cut the nest from the tree and leave it in the sun the next day or freeze it to kill the wasps inside. For those in the ground, pour a soapy solution (preferably hot) down the entrance and then seal it off with dirt or a large boulder. Keep in mind these usually have two entrances, so locating the back entrance is a good idea before you start.

• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Difficulty: Easy These adorable little sombreros make fun table decorations for your Cinco de Mayo celebration! Make one or several for south of the border fun. What you’ll need: • Styrofoam or paper cup • Mini paper plate • 1” wide strip of brown felt • 1/4” wide strip of red felt • 1/4” wide strip of orange felt • Acrylic paint in red and sunflower (tan/yellow) • Medium pom-poms in red, green, yellow, orange, white and brown • Paintbrush • Hot glue gun How to make it: Paint the paper plate and Styrofoam cup with the sunflower paint, let them dry and repeat. Paint the outer edge of the plate rim red, let it dry completely. Hot glue the Styrofoam cup to the center of the paper plate to form your hat. Glue the brown felt around the bottom of the Styrofoam cup (the edge that is touching the plate) to make the hatband. Glue the red and orange felt over the brown to create stripes. Glue the pompoms to the red edge of the paper plate, alternating colors as you go (green, white, red, yellow, brown, orange, green, white, etc.). Tips: If doing this craft in a group or classroom setting, break into two parts: painting one day, doing the remainder of the craft the next. If you don’t have a color paint similar to tan or “sunflower” on hand, make your own by mixing a little brown into some yellow paint until it is the color you desire. Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

During 2013, Congregation Or Ami, a conservative synagogue serving West Houston, Katy and Fort Bend County, will be celebrating its 12th birthday. As is customary for Jewish girls of this age, this means it’s time to have a Bat Mitzvah party! Our celebration will be held at Congregation Or Ami - 3443 Wilcrest Drive (between Richmond and Westpark) - on Sunday evening, April 28th starting at 5 pm. Festivities will include a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, music and dancing and a silent auction. During this event, we will also be honoring and thanking one of our congregants, Augusta Levine, for her many years of volunteer work to train our students to read from the Torah and chant Haftorah.

Registration is now underway for our Annual Vacation Bible School at Epiphany Lutheran Church & School for all children ages 3 years through entering 5th grade. Join us the week of June 10th - 14th from 9 am - 12:30 pm for KINGDOM ROCK VBS. This year, we will transform the church into a Royal Kingdom as we celebrate Standing Strong for God. Each day the campers will play games, learn music, create delicious snacks, go on Bible adventures and more. Tired of those VBS paper plate arts/crafts projects so are we! That’s why we have replaced them with our Imagination Station! Each day your child will experience a different make and take science project that will WOW their friends and family while reinforcing our Bible lesson. Our campers will also be part of a special mission project to send Bibles to children in India. On the last day of camp, parents and friends are invited to our Fanfare Finale filled with music, video clips and lots of pictures recapping our week of camp!

Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Misc. Events water safety event

Texas Children’s Hospital - West Campus and Katy Aquatics are teaming together to host a water safety event with interactive displays, water activities and games for children. The event will be held on Saturday, May 4th, from 10 am - 12 pm at the Cinco Ranch High School Natatorium. Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary NATURE PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN

Enjoy the outdoors with your child (age 2 1/2 to 5) at Audubon nature programs (called the “Titmouse Club”) offered Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, 10:00 - 11:00 AM, at the Edith L.
