May 2013 Residents Bee-wary, Bee-safe This Summer As summer approaches, we want to remind residents that as weather warms bee infestation can be a problem for property residents. Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors, especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony, the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners. Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees - contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to, all bees. • If you know you are allergic to bee stings, check with your doctor about a sting kit. Bee-proof your property • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (1/8-inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (1/8-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall, inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator. Potential Bee nesting sites Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and

more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive, but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. Bees will collect water whereever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet...etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools: When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution. Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle. Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soapwater solution will kill the bees, but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually, you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality, you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population. Pet water and birdbaths: 1 part vinegar to 256 parts water (2 tablespoons vinegar to 1 gallon water). Note: DO NOT USE THE SOAP-WATER SOLUTION ABOVE IN BIRD BATHS & PET WATER! “Texas A&M University Honey Bee Information,” (http://honeybee.tamu.edu/page3/page3.html) - 3/23/2013.

Water Bill Increase Many have been noticing an increase in their water bills. A visit to the monthly Fort Bend MUD 50 meeting (see their new website for more info: www.fortbendmud50.com) revealed that the increase is due to the Subsidence District’s groundwater reduction mandate, which has necessitated the expense of converting to surface water usage. For more information on this, go to the North Fort Bend Water Authority website at: www.nfbwa.com -From Helaine Fuss Clendennen
Free Water Irrigation System Evaluation Any homeowner in MUD 50 can get a FREE evaluation of their irrigation/ sprinkler system. Kidz Korner by Caleb
We can all participate in our Neighborhood/Crime Watch! It is easy! It’s about neighbors looking out for each other.
This space is for kids to blog. If you can talk, text, type or write then you can blog. It just means that you draw or write what you are thinking about.
When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged to contact the police and not to intervene. Call Fort Bend Sheriff at 281-341-4665. An alert and supportive neighborhood is the greatest single defense against crime. By getting to know your neighbors and their vehicles, you will most likely be aware of suspicious people, vehicles and/or sounds that could indicate criminal activity.
What are you thinking about? What do you like? I like playing games on my 3DS, drawing, reading, rapping, basketball, etc. Do you like Pokémon? My favorite Pokémon is Kyurem.
Be a good neighbor. Report suspicious activity to the police and send an email alert to parkwaylakescommunity@ inbox.com so that it can be shared with our neighbors.
I’m Caleb and I am 11 years old. Send me your drawing, the name of your favorite game, your original poem or just what you are thinking about. Be free and express yourself! Blog with me by drawing or writing what’s on your mind and send to parkwaylakescommunity@inbox.com for Kidz Korner! Can anyone answer this question? What do you do when your friends are fighting and you are caught in the middle? Tell me your name and age with your answer.
Some neighbors are interested in organizing a neighborhood watch. We need a Co-chair and committee members. Please let us know you are interested!

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE Pets on Leashes
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/ West Houston area.

Earning Eagle Scout Rank is an extraordinary accomplishment, since the requirements are demanding and only 5% of Scouts reach that level. The fact that 50 young men from Troop 584 have done so is a testament to the strength of character of the dedicated men and women who lead and volunteer and to the persistence and perseverance of the parents and young men in this troop. Troop 584 has been blessed with a very high level of parent volunteer participation. Each month during the school year, the troop goes on an outing where the boys learn camping skills and practice leadership and teamwork. David Hartt coordinates the troop outings, but the boys are required to plan, lead and conduct the activities on their own. The troop also participates in winter and summer camps, where the young men complete merit badge work and participate in swimming, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, sailing and snorkeling. Robert Miller and Debbie Vaughn have provided years of service certifying swimmers and coordinating merit badge classes. All this is accomplished by parents volunteering to give up their nights, weekends and vacations in order to serve during these events. Troop 584 participates in High Adventure Camps such as Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier. Four young men and an adult, Matthew Miller, Chris Mohindroo, Graham Burcaw, David Bjerkaas and Raj Mohindroo recently completed all three to earn the Triple Crown Award. The requirements for Eagle Scout are designed to prepare a young man to succeed in life and to know what to do in an emergency. Ken Guion provides safety training. A heavy emphasis is placed on serving God and country and on community service. Troop 584 has provided help with July 4th activities, charity fun runs, numerous church and religious events, KISD activities, KVPAC and other nonprofit events, disaster relief efforts, ramps for homes for the elderly and handicapped, collections for animal shelters and numerous ecology studies. Troop 584 is very diverse from a cultural and religious standpoint. Members come from several different countries and are Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim and Hindu. The outings have afforded the boys and their parents an opportunity to interact with and learn about, different cultures. With the world getting smaller and the

economies becoming global, this troop offers an excellent opportunity for multicultural leadership training and experience. Chris Mohindroo is a Junior at Taylor High School and is a member of Kingsland Baptist Church. He is the son of Raj and Jolene Mohindroo. His Eagle project involved planting trees at Willow River Farms, which is a home for handicapped adults. In addition to Mr. Scholl, Mr. McKenna and his Cub Scout leader, Mr. Mark Ridgaway, Chris wishes to thank his rank advancement leaders, Steve Slezak, Robert Daniels, Brackin Smith, Jack Hazel, Bruce and Marie Miglin, his Eagle Scoutmaster Conference members Forrest Bjerkaas, Zan May and Eric Stankus and the numerous Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Members and volunteers that helped him complete his journey to Eagle Scout. Chris plans to continue to lead in his troop and to serve God and his country throughout his life. We ask the citizens of Katy to join us in celebrating this remarkable troop accomplishment.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
IdealAirServices.com
There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.
SPRINKLER REPAIR
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Their ministry is to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of metropolitan and suburban Houston through the uplifting message of gospel music. Their song list includes traditional, wellknown hymns, as well as more recent offerings from contemporary recording quartets. Glory Bound features Bass John Voll, Tenor Bill Beck, Baritone Chip Feazel, High Tenor Jeff Dethrow and Tony Custer on the piano. They love sharing wonderful Christian music as it was first performed, with rich vocal harmonies and lively piano accompaniment. They are frequently seen and heard at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy. You can also find them singing for churches, shelters, retirement and assisted living centers, nursing homes and other venues where they can make a joyful noise. Be prepared to tap your toes and clap your hands! For more information, contact Tony Custer at 281 342-8662 or email arcuster@earthlink.net

RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The Lady Bird Chapter now supports 17 philanthropies with a special emphasis on children, working with charities such as Krause Center, Project Linus, Fort Bend County Women’s and Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Kids Connected, Operation Home Front, Sire and others. This new chapter has already positively impacted the community through more than 4,000 hours of community service this year, performed by the chapter’s mother/daughter teams.

These three young ladies in the first graduating class of Lady Birds showcase the intelligent, artistic and most of all compassionate philanthropists they have become. The 2013 graduates, from three different Katy high schools were strangers when they joined the NCL Lady Bird Chapter, but became a cohesive team and best of all, good friends through their efforts in giving back to the community. Meredith Bunning (Seven Lakes), Sarah Dicken (Taylor) and Presley Taylor (Katy) have teamed together and excelled in their dedication and commitment to the Katy community, while inspiring the younger Lady Birds to make a difference in the world. The senior class, while small, has made a big impact. They have made blankets for sick children in local hospitals, hosted Christmas and birthday parties for homeless children, mentored troubled teens, helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity, visited hospitals - going room to room- to sing for the sick elderly patients and worked at food pantries and nursing homes. The seniors stated, “We may not be able to save lives, but we can bring comfort to others during a crisis in their lives, through our decisions to act. We choose to make a difference.” Congratulations NCL Lady Bird Class of 2013. You do make a difference.

VFW Remembers Operation Desert Storm
www.meyevisionkaty.com
On the 22nd anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, VFW Post 9182 paused to remember. Before the Post’s monthly business meeting, Sr. Vice Commander Gary Drahos gave a very enlightening talk on this “Gulf War.”
6725 S. Fry Rd, Suite 400
Drahos, was a specialist in the Army, with the 543 Supply Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion and experienced the war from the beginning. During the presentation, he showed pictures of his first “home in the desert,” a tent city. He reflected on the warnings they were given concerning the effects of drinking the water as well as the large bugs and spiders that were a constant companion in the desert. rd

He went on to describe the missile attack they endured in Feb. of 1991 that left 29 people dead. He also described the desert weather and related about the cold nights that took some getting used to. He also told of having seen General Norman Schwarzkopf as well as President George W. Bush when they visited his area of operation.. At the conclusion of his presentation, Gary was joined by former post commander, Mike Mastrangelo. Mike gave a very insightful talk on his experiences with directing the warfare from Washington DC. This included one instance where they informed the troops on the ground that they had just hit the wrong building and then redirected the lethal fire to the right building.

cinco de mayo - a brief history The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16th.
Commercial interests in the United States and Mexico have also had a hand in promoting the holiday, with products and services focused on Mexican food, beverages and festivities, with music playing a more visible role as well. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts during the week following up to May 5th, so that Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south and being adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year.
celebrate mother’s day - give her what she really wants!
Most people will spend under $100. A survey from PriceGrabber indicates that 62% of consumers plan on dropping under $100 on Mother’s Day presents. Some consumers plan on kissing up to Mom more than others: 8% say they’ll spend over $250.

What does mom really want for Mother’s Day? The results of recent surveys offer some indication. Here are some factoids, tips and survey data points to help guide the search for last-minute Mother’s Day gifts: Been procrastinating? You’re not alone. As of May 1st, more than half of the consumers in one survey said they hadn’t purchased a gift yet.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S.-Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people with a Mexican heritage. In these areas, the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico.

There are free things you can “give” Mom. Many stores and restaurants offer freebies and specials on Mother’s Day: Some businesses dish out free frozen yogurts to moms on Sunday, movie rentals may allowing customers to send one free night’s rental to moms (and anyone who has a mom) via Facebook and there may be stores giving moms a free breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and coffee before 11 AM. Everybody can at least pick up the phone, right? Roughly 20% of men admit to having forgotten about Mother’s Day, compared to just 8% of women, according to a survey conducted for RetailMeNot. This makes guys look bad, but women have an obvious advantage to help them remember the holiday - many of them are mothers, after all.
Parkway Lakes May 2013
Sons are more likely to give mom what she really wants. In another survey, the most popular gift selected by moms was to be taken out for a meal - preferred by 34% of mothers, compared to 10% who’d like jewelry. While 26% of sons say they’re likely to take mom out for brunch, dinner or another meal on Mother’s Day, just 20% of daughters will do so.

Men drop more money on Mother’s Day too. According to the National Retail Federation, men will spend an average of $189.74 to celebrate Mother’s Day, while women can be expected to drop $117.42, on average. About two-thirds of survey respondents who plan on giving Mother’s Day gifts will hand over flowers, the most popular gift item. Paying off mom’s bills may be the best gift of all. The top financial wish of mothers with kids living at home is that they could get out of debt. So, in theory, paying off your mother’s credit card balance - or at least maybe $189.74 of it - would make her dreams come true. Something tells me many moms wouldn’t exactly appreciate the gesture, though. Credit: business.com
YOUR HEALTH NOW! - FEED YOUR WORKOUT What do you eat post workout? Here are some tips as you enjoy Your Health NOW! An ideal post workout snack looks like this: 1) Your Post-Exercise Fluid Needs: Most moderate exercisers will lose about one quart (4 cups) of fluid per hour of exercise, so try to drink about 16-20 ounces of water shortly after your workout to aid the recovery process. 2) Calories. Ideally, try to eat enough calories to equal 50% of the calories you burned during your workout. So if you burn about 600 calories during your workout, try to eat 300 calories afterward. 1) Carbohydrates. Roughly 60% of the calories you eat at this time should come from carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief, your body needs more carbohydrates than protein after a workout, to replace the muscle fuel (glycogen) you used up and to prepare for your next exercise session. 2) Protein. This protein will stop your body from breaking down muscle tissue for energy and initiate the process of rebuilding and repairing your muscles. About 25% of the calories you eat after a workout should come from protein. 3) Fat. Fat doesn’t play a big role in post-workout recovery and eating too much fat after a workout won’t help your weight control or fitness endeavors. Only 15% (or less) of your post-workout calories should come from fat. The ideal time to eat after a workout is within 30 minutes to two hours, when your body is ready and waiting to top off its fuel tanks to prepare for your next workout. Here are some sample food combinations for your post exercise meal: • Bread, a bagel or an English muffin with cheese or peanut butter • Dried fruit and nuts • Cottage cheese with fruit • Fruit juice with cheese • Yogurt with fruit • Veggie omelet with toast or roll • Chocolate milk • Cereal with milk • Eggs and toast • Turkey/ham/chicken/ roast beef sandwich • Vegetable stir-fry with chicken, shrimp, edamame or tofu • Crackers with low fat cheese • Rice or popcorn cakes with nut butter • Smoothie (with milk, yogurt or added protein powder) • A protein or energy bar • A protein or energy shake • Pancakes and eggs
