Dear Neighbors, Please be aware that the newsletter has a two month advance publishing time frame. Our deadline for articles is the 25th of each month. An article submitted May 25th would not appear therefore until the July newsletter. As much as possible, we try to plan ahead. Please keep this in mind when you read the newsletter. For more timely alerts for time sensitive issues such as security and safety notice, lost pets or a change of event dates, it is very helpful if we have your contact information as we send out email alerts. Please contact Spectrum Management to make sure we have your contact information. If you know a neighbor who is not receiving a newsletter or email alerts, please let us know so we can add them to the mailing and email alert list. Reminder: Important contact numbers for Westfield residents is on the last page of the newsletter. You can cut this out and put it on your bulletin board at home for easy reference.
IMPORTANT COMMUNITY EVENTS: POOL OPENINGS
Pools will be opening on Memorial Day weekend. There will be a barbeque and activities. We will also be having another food drive at the pool openings for the Katy area food bank. Please bring a can of food to donate to those who are in need. Correction for March newsletter: The Splash pad opening was posted incorrectly. Splash pad opening was April 1st.

Don’t forget to keep your yard looking beautiful for the yard of the month contest. Winners will be selected the first week of each month. With another drought season projected, make sure to water your yard and especially the trees on a regular basis or they will not survive.

A thank you to our wonderful neighbors. There are noticeably less and less signs posted on our community stop signs, street signs and at our neighborhood entrances. The HOA Board would like to thank our neighbors who are observing the laws about the prohibition of posting those signs illegally and send out a thank those neighbors who help remove “sight blight” by promptly taking down those signs. Also, it seems like less and less trash is in the streets so thank you to everyone who is helping pick up loose garbage and debris. If this keeps up, our neighborhood can only get more and more beautiful.

We had a wonderful turnout for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to Renata Collins for chairing the event and to our neighbors Shannon and Darwin who volunteered. It woud not have been the success it was without your help. Also, we would like to thank the participants who donated a can of food for the Katy Food Bank. Do you know someone who should be recognized for something they do for the community? Let us know and we will put it in the next newsletter. We like to celebrate our neighborhood good will activists. “Many hands make light work.” Many children of my generation grew up hearing that phrase. What does it mean? It means that when larger number of people are involved in doing the work the burden is spread so that it is no longer a burden. Remember the story of the little red hen? There are a few occasions during the year when volunteers are needed to help with events that benefit the entire neighborhood. With over 1,500 homes (and families) we should easily be able to find volunteers but it seems everyone is shy. Don’t be. Volunteering is a great way to help your community with the additional benefit of meeting many of your neighbors. We are compiling a list of people who want to be called/emailed when there is a need for volunteers. Our goal is thirty volunteers and it would be great if long time neighborhood residents (who know the ropes) and our new neighbors would please contact Spectrum as soon as possible and sign up for the volunteer pool. We have the swimming pool opening event coming soon and need “many hands.” Some of the other annual events where help is needed are the Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day weekend pool openings and the Christmas Decorating committee. Also, those with an eye to beautiful yards would be sincerely welcomed in helping select winners for the Yard of the Month contest. It is impossible for seven Board members to provide the amount of time needed for a neighborhood of our size. We truly count on our good friends and neighbors to volunteer to help make Westfield the fabulous neighborhood it is with the wonderful events that are planned. Please let us hear from you soon. Again, this is a great teaching opportunity for those with children. It truly is “as good to give as it is to receive.”

What do I do if a street sign or stop sign is missing/damaged? Commissioner Steve Radack of Precint Three has made it very easy for citizens to contact the appropriate office. Simply go to www. harriscountytx.gov/servicerequestform (website). You will fill out the required fields and someone will contact your promptly to confirm your request and you will subsequently get notified when the work is completed. The Westfield Board of Directors meets every third (3rd) Monday of each month except for the month of the annual meeting. Owners are invited to attend these meetings during the open forum session, but may be dismissed should the Board adjourn into Executive Session. With the management company, there is also a website that provides a good bit of information for homeowners. An owner can go to the website, which is www.spectrumam.com and log in with your address. It will ask you to provide an email address as well. After completing the process, you will receive a password (within 24 hours) that you can use for future logins. This site will give you access to the governing documents for the association as well as a way to pay your assessments online and submit ACC requests for improvements to your property. Another advantage to being registered on the site is that the Board or the management company can send broadcast emails to owners when they need to get information out quickly to the neighborhood. The email addresses will not be provided to any other entity and will only be used for association business. Please register today! Deed restriction violations are recorded on monthly drive by inspections through all sections of Westfield. These are performed by Spectrum Association Management. Homeowners with violations are notified by a series of letters according the Deed Restriction Enforcement Policy. This Policy serves as procedure for Spectrum Association Management to follow. If you receive a letter, don’t take it as an insult or a call to battle. The worst action is to ignore the letter. If you have resolved the problem, need more time or circumstances do not allow you to resolve the problem at this time, notify Spectrum Association Management as per the instructions in the letter. If you wish to report a deed restriction violation in your neighborhood, please complete the form on the web Site.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

KISD BOARD ELECTION
There will be an election for two positions on the KISD Board of Trustees on May 12, 2013. Early voting will take place from Monday, April 29th through Tuesday, May 7th. Any registered voter in KISD may vote early from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM at any of the following locations: The KISD Administration Building, Taylor High School, Cinco Ranch High School and Maurice Wolfe Elementary School. On Saturday, May 4th all of the early voting locations will be open.
KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/ West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

The race will begin and end at the Villagio Town Center, located at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Road. An anticipated 700 runners and walkers of all ages will fill the streets around the Villagio to raise money for Team RWB and Special Buddies. The event includes a competitive 5K and a non-competitive 1-mile event. Participants can register online at www.crrcamo5k.com through Friday, May 25th at 8 PM. All entrants receive a t-shirt and runner goodie packet. Awards will be given in the competitive 5K to the Overall Male and Female runners, Overall Masters Male and Female winners and the top three finishers in the following age divisions: 12 and under, 1319, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies especially designed for kids and teens. The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The teen 3-week performance camps are Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Once on this Island. The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. This show rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning July 16th. Performances for Steel Magnolias will be the last week of Aug. Dance classes will also be offered this summer. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and before-and-after care for working parents. Every 3-week performance camp culminates in 4 performances. Each parent will receive 2 free tickets to a performance of their choice. Additional tickets can be purchased at $10 per person for shows featuring grades 1-6 performers. Prices for the teen performances are either $12 or $15 depending on the venue. All 3-week camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a camp t-shirt, costumes and other needed materials.
