May 2013 LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE! Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor and do your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.
ANIMAL / PET CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space… remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. New - Westheimer Lakes Frequently Asked Questions Q: My neighbor has a ton of violations. What are the Association and PCMI doing about this? A: Your property management service, PCMI and your property manager are onsite each month to inspect property conditions. During this inspection, violations are noted and letters are sent accordingly. There is a process for handling violations, which follows: • 1st Courtesy letter: Notifying owner of violation and giving them (30 days) to cease and desist. • 2nd letter (Certified): 2nd letter notifying the owner of violation will be sent. (Legally no further letters can go out for this violation until the 30 days has expired) • 3rd letter: This letter is optional to the Board and depending on what the violation is they do not always feel the need to send a 3rd letter. At any time you feel that you get a letter that is not warranted, please feel free to contact PCMI immediately to discuss at 281-870-0585. (For lawn maintenance, we send a 10-day notification. Following the expiration of that notification, we can enter the property yard to maintain and charge the cost back to the homeowner.) Have a question that you would like to submit? Contact Anna Lyons alyons@canyongate.com to post your question and with answer from PCMI, your property managers.

Timely Tip for May Gardeners Texas is home to nearly 5,000 native plant species due to the vast and diverse geography of our great state! Often people envision “native plants” with Mesquites and cacti, but many of our basic landscape plants are native to Texas. After the summer of 2011, many gardeners seek to naturally enhance their spaces with Texas tough plants. Native plants tolerate the Texas summer heat better than most, require less water, need less mowing, provide habitats for birds, butterflies and other wildlife, protect the soil and save on fertilizers and insecticides.

Add native trees to your landscape and enjoy the colorful blooms of the Texas Mountain Laurel or Desert Willow. Select Texas Sage for its purple summer flowers or the Red Yucca with its red spikelike bloom as additions to your landscape. Native grasses such as Mexican Feathergrass or Big Muhly add another different texture and look to the garden. Also, don’t forget the reliable perennials for providing Texas tough color! Blackfoot Daisy, Gaura, Coneflower and many of your Salvias are native to Texas and will provide color year after year once they are established. Don’t forget Mom this month! Color in May comes from more than a bouquet of blossoms for Mom on Mother’s Day! Plan ahead and give that special person a naturally-inspired bouquet that changes with the seasons. Buy your Mom a native plant and know that you are making her garden a more enjoyable place for both her and the birds and butterflies. Submitted by: Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery

Katy Robotics Team Invited to North American Championship Tournament The RoboRangers, a Katy-based robotics team received an invitation to the 2013 FIRST® LEGO® League North American Tournament Championship to be held at LEGOLAND resort in California May 17-19, 2013. FIRST LEGO® League (FLL®) is a global robotics program and competition designed to get children aged 9-14 excited about science and technology.

The RoboRangers have been recognized as an overall high-performing team during the 2012-2013 FLL season. The RoboRangers received the 2nd Place Champion’s Award and 1st Place for Robot Strategy and Innovation at a qualifying event held earlier this year. The team also received an advancement ticket to the FIRST LEGO® League South Texas Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Houston - Department of Technology - Coordination of Robotics Education (CORE). The FIRST LEGO® League South Texas Regional Tournament held on February 25th, brought together the top 62 teams from around the region. The RoboRangers were 1 of only 4 teams selected to give their project presentation to the entire audience, an estimated 2,000 people. The team was awarded 2nd Place for Project Presentation and extended an invitation from FIRST LEGO® League South Texas to attend the 2013 FLL North American Championship Tournament. The 2013 FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) North American Championship Tournament is one of four FLL international tournaments and is a celebration of the current SENIOR SOLUTIONS season. Only 72 FLL teams from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico are invited to attend this event, held at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad California in May. The RoboRangers are honored to be one of the 72 teams, out of over 17,000 teams in North America, to be invited to this tournament. FIRST LEGO® League teams of two to ten members work alongside adult mentors to design, build and program autonomous robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT technologies and create an innovative solution to a real world problem as part of a research project. This year’s theme, SENIOR SOLUTIONS, challenged FIRST LEGO® League teams to improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged and connected in their communities. The RoboRangers partnered with local senior citizens. After interviewing them to understand the challenges they face as seniors, the RoboRangers learned that injuries due to falling were a common issue. They chose to help seniors by developing an improved fall detection device so seniors can live their lives without worry, knowing that their well being is monitored anywhere they go.
ABOUT RoboRangers
The RoboRangers robotics team was formed during the fall of 2010 and consists of 9 classmates and friends. Six team members attend WoodCreek Junior High School and two attend WoodCreek Elementary School. Damian and Susan Lynch coach the RoboRangers. ANIMAL / PET CONTROL
Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space… remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans

PLANNING ON OUTDOOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS? Please remember that when planning to do any outdoor home improvements, you must first apply for approval from the Architectural Review Committee by submitting a home improvement form. Visit the SplashPad Texas office or call her at 832-222-2355 for an ARC form and more information.
STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE IMPORTANT TRASH INFORMATION Remember: Unless it is trash pick up day, your trashcans (and any bags of trash) must be hidden from public view. Please do not store your trashcans in front of your garage or on the side of your home - your neighbors don’t want to look out their windows and see your garbage either. Please be respectful and only place trash out on specific trash days.
To report a street light that is not working, call Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage. New Homeowners Must Register to gain access to amenities All new homeowners, as well as current residents (if not already registered), are asked to register at the Westheimer Lakes onsite office located on the second floor of the SplashPad Texas building. This process ensures that all residents have access to the amenities such as the pool, automobile stickers and EZ Tag enrollment (no cost with a Harris County EZ Tag) for entry into the EZ Tag lanes at the gated sections. Some electronic tag fees are applicable. Your proof of resident ownership will be needed to properly complete your registration.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY • Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
Conveniently located at Memorial Hermann - Memorial City Hospital
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.
Eugene C. Lou, M.D., P.A.
In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.
915 Gessner #470 • Houston, 77024
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.
FREDDY’S PAINTING
There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

SYNOPSIS: This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the death Patrick Roarke. He becomes involved in the lives of five alluring and dangerous women, all of whom are suspects in the murder. There are ghosts on the staircase, skeletons in the closet and much more than the Inspector bargained for. His investigation leads into own tortured soul and the nature of truth itself. You will not guess the ending, but you will be teased, seduced, bewildered, amused, frightened and led to a dark encounter with truth or something even stranger. DON NIGRO is an American playwright; his plays Anima Mundi and The Dark Sonnets of the Lady have both been nominated for the National Repertory Theatre Foundation’s National Play Award. He has won a Playwright’s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment For The Arts, grants from the Mary Roberts Rinehart Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and twice been James Thurber Writer In Residence at the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio…. a fun ride and it’s also fun to discover all those kinky goings-on that you always suspected lay beneath those stuffy British murder mysteries. You’ll never look at Agatha Christie quite the same way again… Paolo Alto Weekly

The fact that 50 young men from Troop 584 have done so is a testament to the strength of character of the dedicated men and women who lead and volunteer and to the persistence and perseverance of the parents and young men in this troop. Troop 584 has been blessed with a very high level of parent volunteer participation. Each month during the school year, the troop goes on an outing where the boys learn camping skills and practice leadership and teamwork. David Hartt coordinates the troop outings, but the boys are required to plan, lead and conduct the activities on their own. The troop also participates in winter and summer camps, where the young men complete merit badge work and participate in swimming, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, sailing and snorkeling. Robert Miller and Debbie Vaughn have provided years of service certifying swimmers and coordinating merit badge classes. All this is accomplished by parents volunteering to give up their nights, weekends and vacations in order to serve during these events.
Chris Mohindroo (front, center) became the 50th Troop 584 member to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Also pictured are his Eagle Board of Review members (back), Neva Leszczynski, Denise Narum, Paul King, David Bartine and Ann Ewell.

Chris Mohindroo is a Junior at Taylor High School and is a member of Kingsland Baptist Church. He is the son of Raj and Jolene Mohindroo. His Eagle project involved planting trees at Willow River Farms, which is a home for handicapped adults. In addition to Mr. Scholl, Mr. McKenna and his Cub Scout leader, Mr. Mark Ridgaway, Chris wishes to thank his rank advancement leaders, Steve Slezak, Robert Daniels, Brackin Smith, Jack Hazel, Bruce and Marie Miglin, his Eagle Scoutmaster Conference members Forrest Bjerkaas, Zan May and Eric Stankus and the numerous Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Members and volunteers that helped him complete his journey to Eagle Scout. National Charity League Lady Bird Chapter Honors Its Inaugural Graduating Seniors The Lady Bird Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) proudly honors its graduating seniors at the chapter’s first annual Senior Presentation. The members, family and friends celebrated the accomplishments of each of the young ladies at a dinner and dance at the Falcon Point Country Club. The Lady Bird chapter is the newest National Charity League chapter in Katy, formed in 2010 and chartered in 2012. NCL encourages civic engagement, commitment to community service and leadership development, to cultivate future community and business leaders. The Lady Bird Chapter now supports 17 philanthropies with a special emphasis on children, working with charities such as Krause Center, Project Linus, Fort Bend County Women’s and Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Kids Connected, Operation Home Front, Sire and others. This new chapter has already positively impacted the community through more than 4,000 hours of community service this year, performed by the chapter’s mother/daughter teams.
30
These three young ladies in the first graduating class of Lady Birds showcase the intelligent, artistic and most of all compassionate philanthropists they have become. The 2013 graduates, from three different Katy high schools were strangers when they joined the NCL Lady Bird Chapter, but became a cohesive team and best of all, good friends through their efforts in giving back to the community. Meredith Bunning (Seven Lakes), Sarah Dicken (Taylor) and Presley Taylor (Katy) have teamed together and excelled in their dedication and commitment to the Katy community, while inspiring the younger Lady Birds to make a difference in the world. The senior class, while small, has made a big impact. They have made blankets for sick children in local hospitals, hosted Christmas and birthday parties for homeless children, mentored troubled teens, helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity, visited hospitals - going room to room- to sing for the sick elderly patients and worked at food pantries and nursing homes. The seniors stated, “We may not be able to save lives, but we can bring comfort to others during a crisis in their lives, through our decisions to act. We choose to make a difference.” Congratulations NCL Lady Bird Class of 2013. You do make a difference.

On the 22nd anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, VFW Post 9182 paused to remember. Before the Post’s monthly business meeting, Sr. Vice Commander Gary Drahos gave a very enlightening talk on this “Gulf War.”
6725 S. Fry Rd, Suite 400
Drahos, was a specialist in the Army, with the 543 Supply Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion and experienced the war from the beginning. During the presentation, he showed pictures of his first “home in the desert,” a tent city. He reflected on the warnings they were given concerning the effects of drinking the water as well as the large bugs and spiders that were a constant companion in the desert. rd

He went on to describe the missile attack they endured in Feb. of 1991 that left 29 people dead. He also described the desert weather and related about the cold nights that took some getting used to. He also told of having seen General Norman Schwarzkopf as well as President George W. Bush when they visited his area of operation.. At the conclusion of his presentation, Gary was joined by former post commander, Mike Mastrangelo. Mike gave a very insightful talk on his experiences with directing the warfare from Washington DC. This included one instance where they informed the troops on the ground that they had just hit the wrong building and then redirected the lethal fire to the right building.

Be sure to bid for your favorite art piece before the May 17th Spring concert! All of the art instruments debuted at the annual KVPAC Art for All Family Festival at La Centerra on March 23rd. They will then be on display at Tradition Bank (Grand Pkwy.) in conjunction with the Katy Area Art Cultural Alliance Open House on May 9th. Bidding opened April 2nd. All proceeds will benefit the Seven Lakes High School orchestra program. KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013.
Dr. Amy Vogt
Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them
“Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/West Houston area.

Sixteen new members were inducted into the National Honor Society at Faith West Academy High School during a ceremony Thursday, March 21st, at the FWA auditorium in Katy. The National Honor Society was established in 1921. “The organization has upwards of one million members,” said FWA Chapter president Stan Stanulonis. “Next year will be the 16th year of the Faith West Chapter of the National Honor Society and these 16 inductees will be extraordinary members,” he said prior to inducing the guest speaker. Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. Some of those service activities included: Katy Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity orphanage in Vietnam for children with dioxin disease, St. Justin’s food bank and Houston Food Bank.

Gospel Quartet in Katy ~ Glory Bound
You don’t have to look far to find good Gospel music in the Katy area. For the past year, the men of Glory Bound have been singing and entertaining the crowds at various venues in and around Katy. Glory Bound is a Southern Gospel quartet from the west Houston area. Their ministry is to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of metropolitan and suburban Houston through the uplifting message of gospel music. Their song list includes traditional, well-known hymns, as well as more recent offerings from contemporary recording quartets. Glory Bound features Bass John Voll, Tenor Bill Beck, Baritone Chip Feazel, High Tenor Jeff Dethrow and Tony Custer on the piano. They love sharing wonderful Christian music as it was first performed, with rich vocal harmonies and lively piano accompaniment. They are frequently seen and heard at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy. You can also find them singing for churches, shelters, retirement and assisted living centers, nursing homes and other venues where they can make a joyful noise. Be prepared to tap your toes and clap your hands! For more information, contact Tony Custer at 281 342-8662 or email arcuster@earthlink.net

RUOK Program
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computergenerated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily unsubscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

cinco de mayo - a brief history The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16th. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S.Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people with a Mexican heritage. In these areas, the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico. Commercial interests in the United States and Mexico have also had a hand in promoting the holiday, with products and services focused on Mexican food, beverages and festivities, with music playing a more visible role as well. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts during the week following up to May 5th, so that Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south and being adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year.
celebrate mother’s day - give her what she really wants! What does mom really want for Mother’s Day? The results of recent surveys offer some indication. Here are some factoids, tips and survey data points to help guide the search for last-minute Mother’s Day gifts: Been procrastinating? You’re not alone. As of May 1st, more than half of the consumers in one survey said they hadn’t purchased a gift yet. Most people will spend under $100. A survey from PriceGrabber indicates that 62% of consumers plan on dropping under $100 on Mother’s Day presents. Some consumers plan on kissing up to Mom more than others: 8% say they’ll spend over $250.

There are free things you can “give” Mom. Many stores and restaurants offer freebies and specials on Mother’s Day: Some businesses dish out free frozen yogurts to moms on Sunday, movie rentals may allowing customers to send one free night’s rental to moms (and anyone who has a mom) via Facebook and there may be stores giving moms a free breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and coffee before 11 AM.

Everybody can at least pick up the phone, right? Roughly 20% of men admit to having forgotten about Mother’s Day, compared to just 8% of women, according to a survey conducted for RetailMeNot. This makes guys look bad, but women have an obvious advantage to help them remember the holiday - many of them are mothers, after all. Sons are more likely to give mom what she really wants. In another survey, the most popular gift selected by moms was to be taken out for a meal - preferred by 34% of mothers, compared to 10% who’d like jewelry. While 26% of sons say they’re likely to take mom out for brunch, dinner or another meal on Mother’s Day, just 20% of daughters will do so.

Men drop more money on Mother’s Day too. According to the National Retail Federation, men will spend an average of $189.74 to celebrate Mother’s Day, while women can be expected to drop $117.42, on average. About two-thirds of survey respondents who plan on giving Mother’s Day gifts will hand over flowers, the most popular gift item.

Paying off mom’s bills may be the best gift of all. The top financial wish of mothers with kids living at home is that they could get out of debt. So, in theory, paying off your mother’s credit card balance - or at least maybe $189.74 of it - would make her dreams come true. Something tells me many moms wouldn’t exactly appreciate the gesture, though. Credit: business.com

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - FEED YOUR WORKOUT What do you eat post workout? Here are some tips as you enjoy Your Health NOW! An ideal post workout snack looks like this: 1) Your Post-Exercise Fluid Needs: Most moderate exercisers will lose about one quart (4 cups) of fluid per hour of exercise, so try to drink about 16-20 ounces of water shortly after your workout to aid the recovery process. 2) Calories. Ideally, try to eat enough calories to equal 50% of the calories you burned during your workout. So if you burn about 600 calories during your workout, try to eat 300 calories afterward. 1) Carbohydrates. Roughly 60% of the calories you eat at this time should come from carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief, your body needs more carbohydrates than protein after a workout, to replace the muscle fuel (glycogen) you used up and to prepare for your next exercise session. 2) Protein. This protein will stop your body from breaking down muscle tissue for energy and initiate the process of rebuilding and repairing your muscles. About 25% of the calories you eat after a workout should come from protein. 3) Fat. Fat doesn’t play a big role in post-workout recovery and eating too much fat after a workout won’t help your weight control or fitness endeavors. Only 15% (or less) of your post-workout calories should come from fat. The ideal time to eat after a workout is within 30 minutes to two hours, when your body is ready and waiting to top off its fuel tanks to prepare for your next workout. Here are some sample food combinations for your post exercise meal: • Bread, a bagel or an English muffin with cheese or peanut butter • Dried fruit and nuts • Cottage cheese with fruit • Fruit juice with cheese • Yogurt with fruit • Veggie omelet with toast or roll • Chocolate milk • Cereal with milk • Eggs and toast • Turkey/ham/chicken/ roast beef sandwich • Vegetable stir-fry with chicken, shrimp, edamame or tofu • Crackers with low fat cheese • Rice or popcorn cakes with nut butter • Smoothie (with milk, yogurt or added protein powder) • A protein or energy bar • A protein or energy shake • Pancakes and eggs
