The Westlake Gators Swim Team (WGST) held registration for the 2013 summer swim season on Monday, April 8, 2013 at CiCi’s Pizza on Fry Road. Each swimmer registered will receive a team shirt, insurance while participating in swim team events, team party and trophy at the end of the season. WGST is a summer team offering instruction, training and competition to swimmers ages 4 to 18. The swimmer must be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted. Practice begins Monday, May 6, 2013. Recently we have noticed that a few residents of Westlake and Westlake Forest have been parking commercial vehicles in the subdivision overnight. Commercial vehicles are not allowed in the subdivision between 10 PM and 6 AM. Our deputies have personally contacted a number of commercial truck operators whose vehicles have been in the subdivision overnight or at 10 PM. All were warned of the law and told to remove these vehicles from the subdivision; so far, each individual has complied. If a commercial truck is parked overnight within the subdivision, the Sheriff’s Department will begin issuing citations to the owner of the truck. In most cases, these trucks are not owned by the resident but by their employer. The fine is pretty hefty. If you drive a commercial vehicle, we suggest you make arrangements for overnight parking of that vehicle in a safe place outside the subdivisions. There are many options for parking the larger commercial vehicles. Monthly rent can be paid to several nearby storage facilities and you might even be able to park in a parking lot if you make arrangements with the operator of the shopping center.

Sheriff’s Office Launches Tips Program Via Apps
Sheriff Adrian Garcia recently launched a tips program that can be utilized through apps on cell phones, ipods, etc. iWatchHarrisCounty. com is a virtual crime watch program that empowers citizens across the county to report suspicious behaviors or activities by turning in tips as text messages and emails with image and video attachments and phone calls directly to the HCSO from almost any mobile phone or PC. Citizens can remain anonymous or may choose to disclose their identity. There are four ways to report crime tips: Online at iWatchHarrisCounty.com Text a tip to 1-855-HCSO-iWatch (1-855-427-6492) Use the downloadable app found on iWatchHarrisCounty.com Call 1-855-HCSO-iWatch (1-855-427-6492) iWatchHarrisCounty.com is for submitting crime tips only, not emergencies. Are You Living In the City Limits?
If you live in Westlake Forest or Westlake you are not in the city limits of Houston. (There are a few subdivisions off Barker Cypress, which were annexed into Houston due to the MUD configuration for Park 10.) Do not call 3-1-1 to report various problems with water, sewer, flooding, street lights, nuisances, etc. Instead, in Harris County we must report these and other problems such as abandoned or loose dogs to various agencies within the Harris County government infrastructure.

Many of our residents are not aware that Westlake Forest and Westlake subdivisions are not located within the city limits. That is not unusual, as a lot of subdivisions are confused about this issue. Yes, our address is Houston. But we are in the unincorporated area of Harris County. The Houston city limits begins east of Greenhouse on Saums Road and includes the parks, wooded trail, soccer fields and velodrome located on Saums between Greenhouse and Barker Cypress. Houston city limits continue when you turn right on Barker Cypress Rd. The south side of I-10 is not in the city limits. You will find more information on the inside back page of this newsletter regarding who you should contact with the myriad of problems that we all can occasionally experience in our every day lives.

Children and adults can ride their bicycles or walk on this pedestrian/ bicycle trail on both the north and south sides. The bridge connects the two sides and the trail winds east to connect with a larger set of wooded trails that wind through the area and end on Highway 6. On a recent walk, I saw a few cranes, herons, ibis and some smaller birds in the water and on the shore. Also present were lots of other birds who were enjoying the freedom to fly, dip and turn above this lovely area. Even bluebirds can be seen in this area and they are known for their shyness. Take your children, a friend, your spouse or just yourself out to the South Mayde Creek Walking/Biking Trail and enjoy this special area. This is perhaps the closest to nature that any of us have been since the early 1980s in this subdivision. The trail program is a wonderful asset to Harris County. If you see a crime in progress or suspicious persons on the trail area, call 9-1-1 and report the activity. The Flood Control District for Harris County is serious about keeping this area pristine for the good people of the area.

Trash Pick-up Stickers Belong On Trash Cans
The garbage pickup sticker you receive each quarter shows you have paid your invoice and are a valid customer. It contains your address and the expiration date. The sticker is designed to be placed on a garbage can. These stickers occasionally won’t stick even to a garbage can; use a heavy duty tape when this occurs. Remove your cans from the street as soon as possible. Do not place these stickers on your mailbox. They may well be stolen. Do not leave your garbage cans out for a period of time. GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

There will be an election for two positions on the KISD Board of Trustees on May 12, 2013. Early voting will take place from Monday, April 29th through Tuesday, May 7th. Any registered voter in KISD may vote early from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM at any of the following locations: The KISD Administration Building, Taylor High School, Cinco Ranch High School and Maurice Wolfe Elementary School. On Saturday, May 4th all of the early voting locations will be open.
KATY ISD NAMED AMONG BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
For the eleventh time in the past 12 years, Katy ISD has been named among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, which recognizes schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education. Katy ISD is one of only 21 districts in Texas to receive this recognition for 2013. “Our music educators constantly go above and beyond their required duties to make sure their students succeed. This recognition is a direct reflection of their commitment,” said Bob Bryant, executive director of fine arts for Katy ISD. “It is evident that our community, administration and School Board supports and encourages quality music education for every student.” Last September, two Katy ISD musical groups, the McMeans Jr. High Symphonic Band and the Cinco Ranch High School Symphony Orchestra, were selected as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence honors by the Foundation for Music Education. Additionally, the Cinco Ranch Junior High Honors Band was selected and performed in December for the prestigious Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Selected and performing at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic in San Antonio in February were the Katy High School Jazz Band, the Stephens Elementary “Stompin’ Hooves” instrumental ensemble and the Griffin Elementary Fifth Grade Choir. Continuing to provide diverse music education opportunities, Katy ISD hosted its fifth annual Katy Jazz Festival, April 26th - 27th. The Katy Jazz Festival provides a learning and performance venue to student and professional musicians, while increasing exposure, education and entertainment to the Katy/ West Houston area. “Students in Katy ISD are exposed to high-quality music programs from kindergarten through their senior year,” added Bryant. “Studies have shown that children engaged in music and the arts often perform better academically as well. This is just another reason why we try to offer a variety of quality fine arts programs and opportunities for our students.” Among the music programs offered to Katy ISD students include: string orchestra, full orchestra, choir vocal ensemble, marching band, concert band, jazz band and multiple individual events of solos and small ensembles.

Guest speaker Marsue Ferguson, education and language consultant (specializing in teacher training), addressed the audience with comments about the five pillars of NHS - leadership, scholarship, service, character and citizenship. Mrs. Ferguson encouraged the new inductees to make the most of every opportunity to serve and lead others with honor. “Do well and be able to look back and say ‘I did some good’,” she said. Members were selected based on outstanding performance in scholarship (3.50 or better cumulative GPA), leadership, service and character. “National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue, their exemplary contributions to the school and community,” said Mrs. Sandye Reed, chapter advisor. Mrs. Reed followed by listing various clubs, sports and 59 service activities the inductees were involved. Some of those service activities included: Katy Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity orphanage in Vietnam for children with dioxin disease, St. Justin’s food bank and Houston Food Bank. After the ceremony, there was a congratulatory reception hosted by the current 20 members for new inductees and guests.

CINCO RANCH ROTARY ANNOUNCES CAMO 5K REGISTRATION NOW OPEN Proceeds to benefit Team RWB and Special Buddies
The Cinco Ranch Rotary is excited to announce that registration for the Camo 5K is now open. The Cinco Ranch Rotary Camo 5K, formerly the Cinco Ranch Rotary 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk, Stroll & Roll, will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8 AM and the 1 Mile Walk will begin at 8:05 AM. The race will begin and end at the Villagio Town Center, located at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Road. An anticipated 700 runners and walkers of all ages will fill the streets around the Villagio to raise money for Team RWB and Special Buddies. The event includes a competitive 5K and a non-competitive 1-mile event. Participants can register online at www.crrcamo5k.com through Friday, May 25th at 8 PM. All entrants receive a t-shirt and runner goodie packet. Awards will be given in the competitive 5K to the Overall Male and Female runners, Overall Masters Male and Female winners and the top three finishers in the following age divisions: 12 and under, 1319, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. Summer Camps Houston Family Arts Center Actors Academy Announces 2013 Summer Camps
Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies especially designed for kids and teens. The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The teen 3-week performance camps are Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Once on this Island. The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. This show rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning July 16th. Performances for Steel Magnolias will be the last week of Aug. Dance classes will also be offered this summer. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour.
