New Board Member and Property Manager We are pleased to announce a new board member, Jon Takacs. Jon has lived in Concord Bridge for many years. He and his wife were among the first residents on his street. They raised their two sons here and Jon has a sincere desire to see our neighborhood prosper and continue to be one of the finest areas to raise children. With the approval of the Concord Bridge Board of Directors, Crest Management has appointed Liz Trapollino as the property manager for Concord Bridge. Liz will handle the day to day issues and will be your primary contact for neighborhood issues. She will work under the direction of our board.
Yard of the Month Yard of the month judging begins in May. There are over 1600 homes in Concord Bridge. It’s an overwhelming task to select the best yards without repeatedly choosing the same homes. If there is a home that you feel deserves this honor, please submit the address for consideration. You can call Liz at Crest Management and give her the address and the information will be forwarded to the appropriate persons. If you need information about native plants and minimum care landscaping, you can contact a Master Gardener with AgriLife Extension Program, Monday thru Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM at 281-855-5600.
Summer Activities Would you like to see additional activities in our neighborhood? We would love to have things for our families, but without assistance it is not possible. There are five members on the board of directors and we all have full time jobs and/or family commitments that take up most of our time. We are an unpaid voluntary board with the interest of Concord Bridge at heart. If you have ideas for neighborhood activities, get volunteers to help and present your ideas to the board. We will back legitimate activities to unite with our neighbors.

Deed Restrictions Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home. Crest Management handles most of the business transactions for Concord Bridge under the direction of your board of directors. If you don’t understand any correspondence from Crest Management, please call for clarification. The homeowners association pays for all correspondence related to deed restrictions; therefore, duplicate letters cost us additional fees. Do not ignore correspondence from Crest Management!

Please note, Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard.
Veterinary Public Health Division HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

dogs. Lily is a very smart dog, which is helpful with training, but she is so smart she can open gates and needs a secure backyard with a locked gate and tall fence. She is very loving and likes spending time with her people. People with Shepherd experience will probably understand her needs more than those who have not known Shepherds. She is close to 60 lbs., could probably still stand to gain another 5 lbs., she is up-to-date on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. She is crate trained and is most likely housebroken. She is looking to join a family and she will be very loyal to her person or family. Seems to be fine with children, older children would probably be best. If you would like to meet Lily or find out more about her, please contact Cindi at cindi. hohle@c-a-m.com or Anke at ankearnold@att.net
GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY Adoptable Dog of the Month Lily is still looking for her very own family. You may recognize her from last month’s newsletter. Won’t you consider opening up your home and heart to this beauty? Lily, a German Shepherd mix, was surrendered to BARC, the Houston city shelter, because her owners had “two many.” She was very thin, had just had a litter of pups and was high heartworm positive and was going to be euthanized at the shelter. Her owners kept the puppies, but dumped poor ol’ mom at the shelter to die. She has filled out beautifully and been treated for the heartworms. She is now ready to find a home of her own. Lily loves people and loves attention. Her favorite way of showing her love is to hug you and give you a kiss or two or three! Everyone that meets her loves her. She is probably too interested in cats and even though she is learning about cats, life would probably be simpler if she went to to a home without cats and very small

Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors, especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony, the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners.

Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees - contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to, all bees. • If you know you are allergic to bee stings, check with your doctor about a sting kit. Bee-proof your property • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (1/8-inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (1/8-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall, inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator.

Potential Bee nesting sites Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive, but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. Bees will collect water whereever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet...etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools: When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution. Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle.

Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soap-water solution will kill the bees, but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually, you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality, you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population. Pet water and birdbaths: 1 part vinegar to 256 parts water (2 tablespoons vinegar to 1 gallon water). Note: DO NOT USE THE SOAP-WATER SOLUTION ABOVE IN BIRD BATHS & PET WATER! “Texas A&M University Honey Bee Information,” (http://honeybee.tamu.edu/page3/page3.html) - 3/23/2013.

Florida was the destination for our Acapella choirs spring trip April 27th - 30th. They participated in a special voice workshop followed by fun and frolic at all the theme parks. Thank you so much to our fearless leaders, Deidre Douglas and Matt Perez. Without your tireless efforts of training, fundraising, planning and corralling our members, this trip would not have been reality. Everyone will be forever touched by their time together with memories that will last them a lifetime. I believe one would have a hard time determining who had the most fun, the adult chaperones or the students! May 7th is our final concert for this school year. We will bid farewell to our seniors with songs in our hearts. The Executive Board will be awarding scholarships and awards at the culmination of the performance. The end of year banquet will be held at Northwest Forrest again this year on May 17th. A Masquerade Ball will be the fare! Dining and dancing in our finery will liven the festivities. Our gracious student Board will present an encompassing power point highlighting togetherness of the choirs over this school year. The past members will present the incoming Board, which have proudly stepped up to volunteer and add their leadership for next year. Thank you to Sandra Greer for heading up this momentous event. Also in May, the 24th will be the Spring Trip for the rest of the choir members: Schlitterbahn! They will board buses and drive to New Braunfels for a fun filled day of splashing and relaxing. This will be continued fun, as they will be fresh off their lock in social the previous night! Whew! Action packed and full of song! A musical endeavor unfolds as we experience and grow! GO EAGLE CHOIR!!!!

Bella Donna: I look pretty sad, don’t I? Well, I have to tell you, I have had a hard 6 months. I was lost and had been lost for quite awhile. I was really hungry, tired and lonely. I am still very young, only about a year and a half, at least that is what they tell me. I was told there is someone out there that wants to love and care for me the rest of my life. Could that person be you? I am ready to love and care for you for the rest of my life. Are you athletic? Well, so am I! Please take me on long walks or even better, let’s go for run! CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal.

CFEF TRUSTEE ESTABLISHES ENDOWMENT IN HONOR OF MALALA YOUSAFZAI Long-term supporter and current Trustee, Ed Station, recently made a $20,000 endowment to Cy-Fair Educational Foundation in Honor of Malala Yousafzai. The endowment will be used to help female students in the Cy-Fair ISD further their education. Station was moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient
Concord Bridge May 2013
treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban.
Construction and Repair Let us Repair, Renew or Revitalize your Home
“Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries. They fight to protect the rights of all human beings. They put their own lives at risk, not for oil or land, but in order to protect people who cannot protect themselves.”

Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org

Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. The Fill-the-Boot campaign takes place throughout the United States annually and has been raising money for families served by MDA for more than 50 years. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas. For more information, please contact MDA Director of Business Development Carrie Dalton at 281-787-9416 or cdalton@mdausa.org
Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The Alpha Charity League is a non-profit, mother/ son service league. ACL’s mission is “Fostering mother and son relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service and leadership development.” Our members’ common value is that we want to continue to be involved in a meaningful way in our son’s life and share our value of the importance of community service. Members enter during their 7th grade year in an open enrollment process. Any openings in the 8th grade class will be filled on a “first come, first serve” basis. ACL started in February 2010 with members from area private and public middle schools that feed into the two primary high schools in the Memorial area. Our 160 members (7th and 8th grade boys and their Moms) performed 1300+ hours of community service and had a ball! We work with charities that the boys introduced to the League and have developed long-term, in-depth relationships with them so we can continue to interact with our approved Charities in a very meaningful way. ACL currently has 800+ members in the Memorial, Katy, Tomball/The Woodlands, Copperfield and San Antonio Chapters.
