MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY Harris County Precinct Three Commissioner Steve Radack will honor our servicemen and servicewomen with a Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The service will be held at the Harris County War Memorial in Bear Creek Pioneers Park, 3535 War Memorial Drive. The Harris County War Memorial displays the names of every resident of Harris County who lost his or her life defending our country in each of its six major conflicts: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq and the current conflicts in Afghanistan. Residents Bee-wary, Bee-safe This Summer As summer approaches, we want to remind residents that as weather warms bee infestation can be a problem for property residents. Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners. Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees – contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to all bees.

• If you know you are allergic to bee stings check with your doctor about a sting kit. Bee-proof your property: • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (⅛-inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (⅛-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation: • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator. Potential Bee nesting sites: • Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. • Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. • Bees will collect water whereever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet...etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools: • When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution. Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle. • Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soapwater solution will kill the bees but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population. Pet water and birdbaths: 1 part vinegar to 256 parts water (2 tablespoons vinegar to 1 gallon water). • Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

The Cy-Springs Speech and Debate Team competed at our National Forensic League (NFL) District tournament. Brandon Boyce made it to the final round in Humorous Interpretation and Beatriz Barros made it to the final round in both Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oratory. Beatriz will compete in Original Oratory at Nationals in Birmingham, AL in June of this year. In addition, at the TFA State Competition, in Grand Prairie, TX, Brandon Boyce was awarded the Heart and Soul Award for his dedication to forensic excellence and his generosity of spirit.

The Cy-Springs Cosmetology I and II students represented Cy-Springs High School at the SKILLS USA District Competition on February 8 - 9, 2013. Cosmetology entered 20 projects and received 20 1st place awards, all rated Superior, qualifying them for the SKILLS USA State Competition. The competition had over 400 project entries in various skill related areas of Cosmetology. Best of Show was presented in four categories of the competition. Texas Christian School Texas Christian School sent nine students ranging from grades 1st – 4th grade to compete in the ACSI Speech Competition Friday, March 1 st . The students were required to select a topic, memorize the speech for their topic and recite their memorization in front of judges with fluency and animation. Texas Christian School proudly came home with 2 superiors, 3 excellent and 4 good. Each student that participated from TCS placed and was awarded a ribbon for their hard effort. We could not be more proud of our TCS Tigers! Way to go!!!

Men’s Outward Basketball League Come join men 19 years and over in a Men’s Outward Basketball League at Bear Creek Baptist Church. Bear Creek is located at Fry Rd. and West Little York. Houston Family Arts Center Actors Academy Announces 2013 Summer Camps Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies - especially designed for kids and teens. The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The teen 3-week performance camps are Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Once on this Island. The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. This show rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning July 16th. Performances for Steel Magnolias will be the last week of Aug. Dance classes will also be offered this summer. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th.

The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and before-and-after care for working parents. Every 3-week performance camp culminates in 4 performances. Each parent will receive 2 free tickets to a performance of their choice. Additional tickets can be purchased at $10 per person for shows featuring grades 1-6 performers. Prices for the teen performances are either $12 or $15 depending on the venue. All 3-week camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a camp t-shirt, costumes and other needed materials. slightly adapted from mommas kitchen 8 flour tortillas 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken (I used half of a rotisserie chicken) 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese 3 Tbsp butter 3 Tbsp flour 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup sour cream 1 (4 oz) can diced green chilies Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Mix chicken and 1 cup cheese. Roll up in tortillas and place in pan seam side down. In a small sauce pan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute. Add broth and whisk until smooth. Allow sauce to thicken. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream and chilies. Pour sauce over enchiladas and top with remaining cheese. Bake 20-25 minutes and then broil for a few minutes to brown the cheese.
