Trash Service in Copper Lakes
Pick-up services are on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Remember that trash containers and bags - including those left by lawn crews - should not be put out until 6:00 PM the night before and removed as soon as possible after pickup. All trash must be at the curb by 7:00 AM. Between pick-up days, containers MUST be stored from view. Although the recycling service has been discontinued, there are newspaper drop-offs at local schools. In the event your trash pick-up day falls on a holiday, all trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled pick-up day. No trash pick-up will be made on the day following a holiday, unless it is a regularly scheduled pickup day.

Harris County Alarm Detail

In order to increase compliance and spread awareness, our office is requesting your assistance in informing residents in your community through your HOA newsletter or your scheduled HOA meetings of the need to obtain a permit for operating an alarm system, residential or business, within unincorporated Harris County. Many residents and businesses are unaware of the requirement to obtain an alarm permit once an alarm system has been installed and activated by the alarm company. Alarm systems are established and defined in the Local Government Code 233 (subchapter D), as well as the authority to regulate, adopt rules and impose penalties for unpermitted locations. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The fee for current permit issuance is $35 with a yearly renewal fee of $10. All permit fees are waived for senior citizens 65 years or older. Under current guidelines, a permitted location is allowed five (5) free false alarms annually. Any subsequent false alarms during your permitted year are subject to a $75 fine that is billed to the permit holder’s address. If a site has an active alarm system, yet does not have a permit to operate such alarm, a false alarm may result in a Class C citation, which could range up to $500. Should you or your residents require a copy of the permit application form, or would like to review the regulations regarding permit

requirements, you may do so by visiting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx.net. The application can be printed from the website, then completed and mailed to our office with the applicable fees. We are currently in the planning stages of making the application and payment process available on-line for the convenience to the public. Should you have any questions, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Alarm Detail at 713-7554600 M-F, 8 AM- 5 PM. If you would like any of our Alarm Detail personnel to attend one of your HOA meetings, we would be glad to attend and answer as many questions as possible.
Veterinary Public Health LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

USING LEMONS, VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA AS NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS IN YOUR HOME
Vinegar Vinegar naturally cleans like an all-purpose cleaner. Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a new store bought spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. Vinegar is a great natural cleaning product as well as a disinfectant and deodorizer. Always test on an inconspicuous area. It is safe to use on most surfaces and has the added bonus of being incredibly cheap. Improperly diluted vinegar is acidic and can eat away at tile grout. Never use vinegar on marble surfaces. Don’t worry about your home smelling like vinegar. The smell disappears when it dries. Here are some uses for vinegar in the rooms of your house. Use it in the… Bathroom - Clean the bathtub, toilet, sink and countertops. Use pure vinegar in the toilet bowl to get rid of rings. Flush the toilet to allow the water level to go down. Pour the undiluted vinegar around the inside of the rim. Scrub down the bowl. Mop the floor in the bathroom with a vinegar/water solution. The substance will also eat away the soap scum and hard water stains on your fixtures and tile. Make sure it is safe to use with your tile. Kitchen - Clean the stovetop, appliances, countertops and floor.

Laundry Room - Use vinegar as a natural fabric softener. This can be especially helpful for families who have sensitive skin. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle in place of store bought fabric softener. Vinegar has the added benefit of breaking down laundry detergent more effectively. (A plus when you have a family member whose skin detects every trace of detergent.) Lemon Juice Lemon juice is another natural substance that can be used to clean your home. Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon is a great substance to clean and shine brass and copper. Lemon juice can be mixed with vinegar and or baking soda to make cleaning pastes. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. Use the lemon to scrub dishes, surfaces and stains. Mix 1 cup olive oil with 1/2 cup lemon juice and you have a furniture polish for your hardwood furniture. A favorite use for the fruit is to put a whole lemon peel through the garbage disposal. It freshens the drain and the kitchen. Orange peels can be used with the same results. Baking Soda Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers. Baking soda is great as a deodorizer. Place a box in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb odors. Put it anywhere you need deodorizing action. Try these three kitchen ingredients as natural cleaning products in your home.
“Living, Loving, and Learning in Christ and the Church.”
• Recipe For Homemade Furniture Polish 1 cup olive oil • 1/2 cup lemon juice Mix together in a clean new spray bottle. To use, remember to shake before each application. Apply a small portion to your cleaning cloth. Spread the polish over the furniture, trying to polish evenly. Use another clean cloth to polish the surface dry. • Recipe For Homemade Glass Cleaner 1 cup rubbing alcohol • 1 cup water • 1 tablespoon vinegar Using isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar together makes a quickly evaporating spray glass and mirror cleaner that competes with national brands. This can also be used to give a nice shine to hard tiles, chrome and other surfaces. • Recipe For Homemade Surface Cleaner 1 cup white vinegar • 1 cup water Mix together in a spray bottle and you’ll have your own multi-purpose cleaner. Most useful in the bathroom and kitchen on surfaces.

HOW TO KILL WASPS - HOW TO ELIMINATE WASPS FROM YOUR YARD
Yellow jackets, paper wasps and hornets are the most common types of wasps that build their nests right where you don’t want them - in and around the lawn and garden. While these insects are often seen as pests due to their nasty stings, they’re actually important for the garden as both predatory insects and pollinators. However, when their nests get a little too close for comfort, like in the yard, it’s sometimes necessary to eliminate wasps to avoid any future problems that may arise. Wasp Deterrent The best way to deal with wasps is to minimize their numbers by deterring them from the area. Do not keep any food (including your pet’s) lying around. Keep drinks covered when outdoors and always ensure that garbage cans are tightly sealed. Also, keep any fallen fruits from nearby trees or shrubs, as well as in the garden, picked up, as their sweet juices attract the wasps. How to Get Rid of Wasps If you already have a wasp problem and you need to know how to kill wasps, then it helps to understand what type you are dealing with and their particular nesting habits. Yellow jackets, for instance, normally build their nests in the ground and unfortunately, you may not even know they’re there until it’s too late. Nothing is worse than going out to the garden and coming back with a dozen or so stings. These aggressive wasps can also be found nesting in trees and shrubs, beneath eaves and within other areas like wall voids in old buildings. Hornets, too, commonly nest in trees or under the eaves of buildings. Paper wasps, which are the least aggressive, can be found just about anywhere, building their nests under nearly any horizontal surface - including eaves, overhangs, tree limbs and within abandoned structures. Most of the time all of these wasps prefer quiet, out-of-the-way places. Of course, it doesn’t always seem to work out like that. This is when getting rid of wasps is our only option through the use of sprays or other means. How to Kill Wasps Generally, spring is the most ideal time for killing wasps, before the queen has established her colony. By late summer and fall, their nests decline as they become more interested in collecting pollen or foraging for sugary sweets. If the nest is large or you’re dealing with the more aggressive types, like yellow jackets and hornets, you may want to call in reinforcements (professionals) to handle the job. Otherwise, you can grab the can of wasp and hornet spray and following label instructions, spray the insecticide into the nest entrance or saturate the paper wasp nest during evening hours when the wasps are less active. In addition to regular wasp spray, some people also use WD-40. However, when killing wasps in a plant (such as a tree or shrub), this isn’t always practical. That’s when using a home remedy to remove a wasp nest is necessary. For aerial nests, cover with a trash bag and seal it shut. Cut the nest from the tree and leave it in the sun the next day or freeze it to kill the wasps inside. For those in the ground, pour a soapy solution (preferably hot) down the entrance and then seal it off with dirt or a large boulder. Keep in mind these usually have two entrances, so locating the back entrance is a good idea before you start. www.gardeningknowhow.com

CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY
In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. The immediate response by our schools demonstrates how important their safety is to us. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools

moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban.

“Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries. They fight to protect the rights of all human beings. They put their own lives at risk, not for oil or land, but in order to protect people who cannot protect themselves.” Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

Where your comfort is our priority!
May for Copper Corners Girl Scouts brings a “Bridging” event for those troops moving to the next Girl Scout level. It is a tradition to walk across a small wooden bridge and exchange a Girl Scout hand shake with a sister Scout from your new level. It is also a chance to wear that new uniform or at least the new vest or sash! It is one of those occasions that make leaders and parents misty-eyed, especially as we close the evening with a Friendship Circle and sing “Make New Friends.” We would especially like to congratulate our graduating Ambassadors. We are so proud of you all! Many girls from Copper Corners will be continuing their Girl Scout experience at Girl Scout Camp. San Jacinto Council offers resident, day and twilight camps with many opportunities for all Girl Scout levels. Camp means meeting new friends from around Houston or around the world! Whether it is your first time to paddle a canoe, go through the “people washer” or dance the “cotton-eyed Joe,” there is always something new to learn and do at camp.
Girl Scout troop 16239 shows off their Easter crafts! This Junior Girl Scout troop plans their own meetings and activities (with some help from their leaders). Each girl has been acquiring leadership and organizational skills by being in charge of a particular meeting, this year.
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
April brought two fun events for the Copper Corners Service Unit. On March 20th, Junior Girl Scout Troop 16257 invited all our Brownie Girl Scouts to “Jammin’ Jammies” Brownie Day. Girls who attended wore their pajamas and bathrobes for an exciting morning of songs, games and crafts. The event was planned by the Junior Girl Scouts, who also led the individual sessions. The service project for the event was collecting non-perishable foods for our host church’s food pantry. It was a lot of fun for all who attended! Troop 16257 and their leaders worked very hard to make this a great event! On April 28th, the “Spring Fling” Daisy event helped our youngest Girl Scouts learn about gardening and having a Girl Scout good time! The girls also took home a very special craft and brought items to make “birthday in a box” boxes (and bags) for Cypress Assistance Ministries. Thanks to Diane Massie and Senior troop 16043 for an active and fun afternoon!

We are working on a history of the Copper Corners Service unit. Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. It is not too late to join Girl Scouts now! “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Exchange Students
Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

Parenting Groups LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP
La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. The Cy-Fair group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10:00 AM, in the Berkshire Community Meeting Room, 15607

Please email Heather Finney at hfinney03@yahoo.com for meeting dates, to RSVP or with any questions. Cornerstone membership or preschool enrollment is not required, so bring all of your friends that would like fellowship time with other Christian moms. The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers.
