Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will continue their annual Fillthe-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday, May 11, 2013 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will be out in the community collecting funds for the campaign. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. The Fill-the-Boot campaign takes place throughout the United States annually and has been raising money for families served by MDA for more than 50 years. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY

In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal.

CFEF TRUSTEE ESTABLISHES ENDOWMENT IN HONOR OF MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Long-term supporter and current Trustee, Ed Station, recently made a $20,000 endowment to CyFair Educational Foundation in Honor of Malala Yousafzai. The endowment will be used to help female students in the Cy-Fair ISD further their education. Station was moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban. “Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries. They fight to protect the rights of all human beings. They put their own lives at risk, not for oil or land, but in order to protect people who cannot protect themselves.” Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

COMPARING APPLES & ORANGES A seller pricing his home based upon sales information found on the Internet may be comparing apples and oranges because important details are missing. Deferred maintenance, need for updating, finishes, the lack or existence of amenities like large closets, a swimming pool, and topof-the-line appliances – all affect a home’s intrinsic value. And in today’s rapidly changing market, even yesterday’s comparable sale may be outdated. Properties must be evaluated on their merits by a Realtor who knows the neighborhood and can separate the apples from the oranges. Call me at 713.578.0571 and I’ll help you determine the value of your home.

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB MEMBERS EARN SERVICE AWARDS

Fifty-nine members of the Cypress Ranch Key Club and one of the club’s faculty advisors have earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2012. Twenty-four of the students and Faculty Advisor Jennifer Hydes are repeat award winners, having also won a Presidential Volunteer Service Award for 2011. The awards were presented at the club’s annual Installation and Awards Banquet in April. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best in the American spirit and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation. The organization was created in 2003 by President George W. Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make to the nation. There are three levels (gold, silver and bronze) and four categories (kids, young adults, adults and families/groups) of the award varying by age and hours of service completed within a twelve-month period. All award recipients receive a personalized certificate of achievement, a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama and an official President’s Award pin. Twenty-six students earned the Gold level award. They are Kelly Boucher, Melissa Burket, Brock Burnett, Amanda Donovan, Jordan Fraase, Madison Garner, Sara Gates, Christina Gibson, Mackenzie Golladay, Christopher Gracia, Kourtni Hatton, Ashley Hernandez, Al Hirani, Michelle Hoang, Rachel Iselin, Blake Lieberman, Zahra Lokhandwala, Cleighton Marshall, Alan Mendoza, Samantha Miller, Phoebe O’Keeffe, Ashlee Sawtell, Alexandra Shaw, Brennan Skeen, Lauren Van Fleet and Michael Walther. The Silver award was given to seven club members: Jacob Angst, club president Hannah Bielefeldt, Gabby Chamdal, Vanessa Garcia, Molly Godinich, Zoe Tao and Vy Tran. Twenty-six members and the club’s faculty advisor have won the Bronze award. Bronze award winners are Jessica Bradley, Anna Carman, Fernanda Castro, Emily Clark, Neha Daga, Garrett Duncan, Grace Duncan, Akanksha Goel, Courtney Golladay, Pamela Gonzalez, Amy Gracey, Devon Grady, Trevor Hensley, Kristen Kech, Mikaela Kufrovich, Madison McEwen, Abby Mohr, Aksa Muhammad, Olivia Poff, Swetha Raj, Christen Smith, Zoe Stover, Evan Tran, Sophia Tran, Mathew Walther, Anika Zaman and Faculty Advisor Jennifer Hydes. Each Key Club member is charged to perform 50 hours of service per year to his home, school and community. The 59 Key Club members recognized with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2012 completed over 8,200 service hours on their own in the CFISD schools and our local community. Cypress Ranch’s large Key Club of 710 members performs tens of thousands of service hours annually.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more. All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org

Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.
