CYPRESS MILL KEENAGERS

a group of seniors in Cypress Mill

If you are new to Cypress Mill, you probably are not aware that we have a seniors group. We call ourselves the Keenagers. We have been having pot luck dinners in our homes for the past few years but our attendance had been dwindling, so we thought we’d go back to the Cypress Mill Recreation Center. We are going to have our get-together in our newly decorated recreation area. We have a lovely new covered porch area

Cypress Mill

with fans and tables and benches. The bathrooms have been remodeled and redecorated and our HOA board has done a great job in their selections. We have scheduled the following dates for the next few months and the dates for the summer are: Sat., May 18th; Sat., June 22nd & Sat., July 20th. I hope you will contact me for more information and come and try our little group. We welcome singles and couples. It’s a great way of meeting new people, making friends and catching up with others. I hope to hear from you soon and in the meantime, enjoy this beautiful weather. Carolyn Hoffmann ca.hoffmann@att.net 281-256-3480

Easter egg hunt

The Easter egg hunt was held a week later than advertised due to some scheduling conflicts. However, the weather was perfect and everyone had a fantastic time. Special thanks go to Carolyn Hoffmann and our community manager, Mike Crahan. At the last minute Mike and Carolyn jumped in to get the event organized. Carolyn was one of the founding organizers of this event and Mike added his sparkling enthusiasm to get the kids excited about collecting their eggs before the Easter bunny gave the ‘ready, set go!!’ In addition to collecting as many eggs as the kids could hold in their baskets, there was music provided by Mike Broussard, face painting by Kathy Foote, wonderful balloon creations by Balloons with Rachael and a fun winding train ride provided by Mike Broussard. Cookies and juice/water were on hand for snacks. And, of course, our wonderful Easter bunny was Jeffery. Girl Scout volunteers stuffed all the eggs and set out the hunting areas for the different age groups.

New recycling carts

By the time you receive this newsletter, you will have received a letter from Cypress Hill MUD No. 1 telling you about the new 48 gallon recycling carts that were due to be delivered mid-April. If you have any questions or concerns about these carts, you can contact Best Trash via their website: www.besttrash.com or phone: 281-313-2378. These carts are not mandatory and some homeowners have elected to continue using the red recycling bins instead. Recycling materials include all paper products, plastics 1-7, aluminum and tin cans and all colors of glass. Best Trash will provide each resident with one recycling cart and will replace any carts that are defective or otherwise become unusable due to normal wear and tear. Grilling Safety Tips

With summer almost upon us, here are a few safety tips for outdoor grilling. Pick a safe grilling area • Place your grill on a flat, level surface so it won’t tip over. Keep it away from overhangs, fences, deck railings and shrubbery that could be ignited by a sudden flare-up or flying spark. • Position the grill in a well-ventilated location. Never barbecue inside homes, tents or vehicles. Burning charcoal inside can kill you. It gives off carbon monoxide, which has no odor. • Keep children and pets away from the grill when it’s in use.

17507 Thicket Hollow Lane

Keep Cypress Mill beautiful

• Bring in trash/recycling bins as soon as possible after pickup. • Do not set out your trash until the evening before scheduled collection. • Do not post sign on lamp poles, mail boxes, but if you absolutely have to, please remove them once the event/sale is over. • Remove lost/found pet signs after a reasonable time. • Do not leave toys, bicycles, ramps, etc. in the street overnight. • Do not leave basketball hoops in the street causing a safety issue with cars, especially after dark. • On windy days, please secure your trash in the containers. • Please use a pooper scooper when walking your dog on common areas. • Take your empty water bottles, soda/beer cans home with you.

Handle charcoal carefully • Never add lighter fluid directly to hot coals to get a sluggish fire going again. The flame could travel up the stream of fluid and burn you. • If coals are slow to start, place several new briquettes in a small metal can and apply lighter fluid following lighter fluid instructions. Add these briquettes, using a pair of long-handled tongs, to warm coals and light with a match. • Never use gasoline or kerosene to light a charcoal fire. Both can cause an explosion. • Do not close the lid until you are ready to cook. Doing so might put out the fire or cause a rush of flame when the lid is removed. Closing the lid prematurely also can prevent charcoal lighter fluid from completely burning away, giving foods a strange taste. • Coals are HOT - they can reach up to 1,000°F. Use insulated, flameretardant mitts when cooking or handling any part of the grill. Also, use longhandled barbecue tongs and utensils for safe handling of food and coals. • Smoke the Competition. When smoking meat, pay special attention to controlling internal grill temperature. For an accurate reading, place a candy thermometer’s probe through the top grill vent and maintain a temperature of about 225 to 250°F. If the temperature rises above this range, slide the vent directly under the charcoal nearly closed while wearing heat-protective gloves. Continue to monitor the heat and open the vent again as the temperature drops.

Putting out the fire • Place the cover on the grill, close the vents and allow the coals to burn out completely. Let the ashes cool for at least 48 hours and then dispose of them in a non-combustible container. • If you must dispose of coals before they’ve completely cooled, remove them individually with long-handled tongs and carefully bury them in a can of sand or in a bucket of water. Never pour the hot coals into a pail of water or vice versa. Steam from the briquettes may burn you. Storing coals • Store briquettes in a cool, dry area of the basement or garage. When charcoal absorbs moisture, it can be hard to light. • For instant-lighting charcoal, keep bag tightly closed to prevent lighter fluid from evaporating.

Attention Pet Owners

As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.

Stork Report / Honor Roll / Commendable Achievements

Do you want to acknowledge a local achievement, birth of a new baby or grandbaby, a family member returning home from active service, a special birthday, etc.? If so, email the information to M.Crahan@pmghouston. com and we’ll include it in the Cypress Mill Messenger. Notices should be received by the 6th of the month to appear in the following month’s issue.

Trash/recycling Collection Bins

On windy days, please be sure to secure your recycling items in the red recycling bins so that we don’t have pizza boxes, paper bags, milk containers, etc. strewn across the neighborhood. We have had some high winds recently and blown trash has become quite an issue.

Trash Pickup

Please remember that there is no trash pickup on public holidays. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. If the weather is particularly windy and you are setting your trash cans out on the previous evening, make sure that the items inside are secure. Nobody wants to be picking up their neighbor’s trash because the wind has blown the contents out of the bin.

Mail Boxes and Lamp Poles

These are not meant for commercial advertisements and signs, handmade or printed and are unsightly. If you see commercial advertising signs, please take a moment to remove them… your neighbors will appreciate it. Also, please remember to remove your garage sale sign as soon as your sale is over. The same applies to lost pet signs. Please do not leave these signs up longer than necessary.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY

• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY

In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. The immediate response by our schools demonstrates how important their safety is to us. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools

Houston Fire Fighters Making Houston the City with the Biggest Heart

Any Door 832-302-0069

Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will continue their annual Fillthe-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday, May 11, 2013 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will be out in the community collecting funds for the campaign. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 has been the #1 department in the country for 8 out of the last 10 years, raising more than $6.8 million during that time and making Houston the city with the biggest heart. The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. The Fill-the-Boot campaign takes place throughout the United States annually and has been raising money for families served by MDA for more than 50 years. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.
