Timely Tip for may Gardeners
The weather is warmer and the days are getting a little longer. It’s time to get outside and prepare your garden and lawns for spring. Enjoy a weed-free lawn by applying a pre-emergent to prevent summer broadleaf and grassy weeds. Add a little natural inspiration to your home by creating colorful container gardens. Simply select an appropriate-sized container, choose a well-blended potting soil, secure plants with similar light and watering requirements, plant them, decorate with mulch and enjoy! For those of you who choose to garden with a purpose, start your own vegetable and herb garden today for summer harvesting. Vegetable and herb gardens are aesthetically-appealing and fragrant. You and your family can enjoy the fruits of your labor for months and years to come! Celebrate Earth Day this month and go “green.” A successful garden begins with good soil. Organic material is important to the soil composition. It helps with drainage and increases the soil microbe population. Expanded shale is used to break up hard, compacted clay soils. Applying molasses will help stimulate microorganisms and energize your plants. Top dress your flowerbeds and containers with organic mulches. They not only break down slowly putting organic material back into the soil, but they also prevent weeds, conserve moisture and cool the soil during the heat of the summer. There are products that are safe to use around pets and children. There are also beneficial insects available such as Ladybugs, Lacewings and Beneficial Nematodes! These guys will attack the pests and take care of them “naturally.” Submitted by: Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery

Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study
Due to the fire at our Beach Club on Christmas night, the Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study moved to the activity center at Lakes on Eldridge North. We so appreciate their kindness and generosity in letting us share their facility on the same day and same hour as we had before the fire. Our new study focuses on Becoming A Woman Who Listens To God in a 16 week study by Sharon Jaynes. The author of this study, addresses How God still speaks to us today, identifies whose voice we hear, suggests barriers that block our hearing and remedies for learning to listen and hear when and what God speaks to us.

SWANS CAN BE DANGEROUS
This time of the year, Mother Nature provides our LOE swans with some common sense. It is mating, nesting, then egg-laying season and they feel the need to protect their territory against predators including humans, dogs and other waterfowl. Most of the swans in our neighborhood are not old enough to mate but some will go through the motions of even building a nest. The pairs of swans that are old enough to produce young (cygnets) are normally gentle and can be fed while posing no threat. However, our males (cobs) will become aggressive and territorial in trying to protect their mate and their nest. This is usually temporary until mating season is over. If you are walking past a lake and a swan swims to your side and follows you, BEWARE! If you see a swan with his neck back and feathers up such as the one in the picture, please stay away, do not attempt to feed him and walk on the other side of the street as he is in ATTACK position. Please warn your nannies and sitters not to stroll babies around the swans. We must try to remember that the swans are protecting their territory and readying it for their young. To antagonize, tease, throw objects at or injure the swans is a felony and we need to be as cautious of them as they are to us. Thank you for your cooperation.

CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. • When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound 2. Harris County Animal Control 3. Houston SPCA 4. Houston Humane Society 5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection

The Adoptable Dog of the Month
Lily is still looking for her very own family. You may recognize her from last month’s newsletter. Won’t you consider opening up your home and heart to this beauty? Lily, a German Shepherd mix, was surrendered to BARC, the Houston city shelter, because her owners had “two many.” She was very thin, had just had a litter of pups and was high heartworm positive and was going to be euthanized at the shelter. Her owners kept the puppies, but dumped poor ol’ mom at the shelter to die. She has filled out beautifully and been treated for the heartworms. She is now ready to find a home of her own. Lily loves people and loves attention. Her favorite way of showing her love is to hug you and give you a kiss or two or three! Everyone that meets her loves her. She is probably too interested in cats and even though she is learning about cats, life would probably be simpler if she went to to a home without cats and very small dogs. Lily is a very smart dog, which is helpful with training, but she is so smart she can open gates and needs a secure backyard with a locked gate

and tall fence. She is very loving and likes spending time with her people. People with Shepherd experience will probably understand her needs more than those who have not known Shepherds. She is close to 60 lbs., could probably still stand to gain another 5 lbs., she is up-to-date on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. She is crate trained and is most likely housebroken. She is looking to join a family and she will be very loyal to her person or family. Seems to be fine with children, older children would probably be best. CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY
In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. The immediate response by our schools demonstrates how important their safety is to us. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools

moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban.

“Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries. They fight to protect the rights of all human beings. They put their own lives at risk, not for oil or land, but in order to protect people who cannot protect themselves.” Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org

Exchange Students
Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.
Call 1-855-351-GOLD
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. Adopt A US Soldier
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www. adoptaussoldier.org to register.
