May 2013 HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB Arbor Day Celebration
Saturday, May 25th 4:00 PM McBride Garden Located on the west side of Huffmeister next to Horsepen 6 Tee Box Hearthstone Garden Club is celebrating Arbor Day by rededicating McBride Garden on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 4:00 PM in the afternoon. The garden, previously dedicated to Neil and Virginia McBride, was in need of restoration. As our annual project, the garden club chose to update the garden and to hold a rededication ceremony honoring the contributions of Mr. Neil McBride. All are invited to attend the ceremony and we hope that you will take the time to come by and say, “hello,” to our honorary “Mayor of Hearthstone.” Neil McBride moved to Hearthstone in 1982, only six years after the first houses were built. He and his wife, Virginia, have always been staunch supporters of the community. Neil and Virginia were originally from Galveston and moved to Houston after they were married. Neil spent 22 years in the United States Air Force, gave golf lessons in the 1950’s and worked in the chemical industry with both Union Carbide and Reichell Chemicals. He and Virginia had three children together and sadly, Virginia passed away on October 24, 2004. Neil has always been an active participant in the community, joining the homeowner’s association board of directors and building relationships with local county officials and law enforcement agencies. He told his wife, Virginia, that once he was retired, he would focus on making Hearthstone a better place to live. Mr. McBride is responsible for getting the caution lights for Owens Elementary on Jackrabbit Road. He led a group of homeowners to gain approval for sidewalks along Huffmeister, which are big enough for golf carts and large strollers. He campaigned with our current association board of directors to keep Huffmeister from becoming a major thoroughfare. His relationship with county officials continues to allow current board members to meet and to be heard at the county level. Neil and Virginia were also there to support the Hearthstone Garden Club and its scholarship program, which has helped so many area residents with undergraduate tuition. The moniker “Mayor of Hearthstone” was coined by his neighbor, Anne Buckingham, who saw just how much Neil was doing to make Hearthstone a better place to live. Neil continues to keep active in the community by meeting for coffee each Wednesday at the club with other retirees and attending the Constables breakfast each month with the current HOA Board. The Neil and Virginia McBride Garden is located on the west side of Huffmeister, just beyond the bridge, next to the Horsepen 6 tee box. CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY
In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. The immediate response by our schools demonstrates how important their safety is to us. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools

CFEF TRUSTEE ESTABLISHES ENDOWMENT IN HONOR OF MALALA YOUSAFZAI
Long-term supporter and current Trustee, Ed Station, recently made a $20,000 endowment to Cy-Fair Educational Foundation in Honor of Malala Yousafzai. The endowment will be used to help female students in the CyFair ISD further their education. Station was moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban. “Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries.

Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
Congratulations to our premier singers! Vocalists that participated in tryouts and made the All Area choir are: Abi Amadin and Alicia McCormick. Making All Area choir and advancing to All State choir are: Thomas Kang, Lauren Lafferty, Marguerite Lavin, Evan Moynihan and Jordan Svehla. We are proud or you and celebrate your accomplishment with you! Our Acapella and Mens choir clinics for UIL were a success, UIL on the 15th of April carried us through each portion with flying colors! Great job choirs! Following each clinic, our young men and women enjoyed an ice cream treat and the men feasted on hot dogs! Thank you to our fabulous volunteers for your help and our awesome executive Board members for providing these post clinic treats. You guys rock! Florida was the destination for our Acapella choirs spring trip April 27th - 30th. They participated in a special voice workshop followed by fun and frolic at all the theme parks. Thank you so much to our fearless leaders, Deidre Douglas and Matt Perez. Without your tireless efforts of training, fundraising, planning and corralling our members, this trip would not have been reality. Everyone will be forever touched by their time together with memories that will last them a lifetime. I believe one would have a hard time determining who had the most fun, the adult chaperones or the students! May 7th is our final concert for this school year. We will bid farewell to our seniors with songs in our hearts. The Executive Board will be awarding scholarships and awards at the culmination of the performance. The end of year banquet will be held at Northwest Forrest again this year on May 17th. A Masquerade Ball will be the fare! Dining and dancing in our finery will liven the festivities. Our gracious student Board will present an encompassing power point highlighting togetherness of the choirs over this school year. The past members will present the incoming Board, which have proudly stepped up to volunteer and add their leadership for next year. Thank you to Sandra Greer for heading up this momentous event.

Also in May, the 24th will be the Spring Trip for the rest of the choir members: Schlitterbahn! They will board buses and drive to New Braunfels for a fun filled day of splashing and relaxing. This will be continued fun, as they will be fresh off their lock in social the previous night! Whew! Action packed and full of song! A musical endeavor unfolds as we experience and grow! GO EAGLE CHOIR!!!! Bella Donna: I look pretty sad, don’t I? Well, I have to tell you, I have had a hard 6 months. I was lost and had been lost for quite awhile. I was really hungry, tired and lonely. I am still very young, only about a year and a half, at least that is what they tell me. I was told there is someone out there that wants to love and care for me the rest of my life. Could that person be you? I am ready to love and care for you for the rest of my life. Are you athletic? Well, so am I! Please take me on long walks or even better, let’s go for run! Croc: Croc is a gorgeous brown tabby. He enjoys running around the house chasing his brothers and sisters. Croc gets along with dogs, cats and kids. Can you please help him find his family?

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

The Harris County War Memorial displays the names of every resident of Harris County who lost his or her life defending our country in each of its six major conflicts: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq and the current conflicts in Afghanistan.
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.
Open to the public
Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.
Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.
With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

Adopt A US Soldier
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
