CORNERSTONE UMC SUMMER CAMP

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp facilitated by Cornerstone United Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion of 4th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2013. Camp hours are 9:30 AM-1 PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer and you are invited to participate in any or all! Session I - Blast from the Past is June 17th-21st Session II - Welcome to the Jungle is July 15th-19th Session III - Planes, Trains and Automobiles is August 5th-9th The cost per camp per child is $120. Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies especially designed for kids and teens. The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/ hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and before-and-after care for working parents. Every 3-week performance camp culminates in 4 performances. Each parent will receive 2 free tickets to a performance of their choice. Additional tickets can be purchased at $10 per person for shows featuring grades 1-6 performers. Prices for the teen performances are either $12 or $15 depending on the venue. All 3-week camps include two complimentary tickets to the show, a camp t-shirt, costumes and other needed materials. Each one-week camp has a performance showcase for family and friends on the final day of camp. Parents receive two free tickets and additional tickets are only $5. CFEF TO ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation Board of Trustees have scored all applications received for the 2013 graduating class and are working on their final selections. The winners will be announced at the award ceremonies held at the high schools. The Foundation will award close to $300,000 in scholarships this year, bringing the total since inception to more than $5.2 million. Currently available are the The Schroeder Scholarships, which have an application deadline of May 15, 2013. These scholarships are only for students attending Lone Star College. CFEF TRUSTEE ESTABLISHES ENDOWMENT IN HONOR OF MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Long-term supporter and current Trustee, Ed Station, recently made a $20,000 endowment to Cy-Fair Educational Foundation in Honor of Malala Yousafzai. The endowment will be used to help female students in the Cy-Fair ISD further their education. Station was moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as

CFISD SCHOOL SAFETY

In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. CY-SPRINGS COMPETES AT NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE

The Cy-Springs Speech and Debate Team competed at our National Forensic League (NFL) District tournament. Brandon Boyce made it to the final round in Humorous Interpretation and Beatriz Barros made it to the final round in both Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oratory. Beatriz will compete in Original Oratory at Nationals in Birmingham, AL in June of this year. The Cy-Springs Cosmetology I and II students represented CySprings High School at the SKILLS USA District Competition on February 8 - 9, 2013. Cosmetology entered 20 projects and received 20 1st place awards, all rated Superior, qualifying them for the SKILLS USA State Competition. The competition had over 400 project entries in various skill related areas of Cosmetology. Best of Show was presented in four categories of the competition. Congratulations to Kira Clark for receiving the top award, Best of Show in the Fantasy Hairstyling Category!! In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families

lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Pope John XXIII will be holding its annual Spring Golf Tournament on Sunday, May 5th. The tournament will be held at Cypress Lakes Golf Course and will begin at 1:00 pm with a shot gun start.
